Orquidea Del Sur is a regal bed-and-breakfast like hotel nestled above the dancing shores of Nicaragua’s Playa Yankee beach. The intimacy of the hotel makes it an ideal honeymoon destination or an unforgettable family beach vacation. Many visit our location for intimate weddings, quiet retreats, women’s getaway vacation or just to take advantage of a great beach vacation to surf and play. Our facilities feature comfortable well appointed rooms and a variety of world class amenities that give our quaint space an all-inclusive feel with family-style attention to service. The lower level of this two level newly constructed tropical paradise has four (4) well appointed suites, each with its own porch with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the suites are the 50-foot infinity pool, the rancho and the large in-ground fire-pit, all surrounded by tropical landscaping and the sounds of the twenty foot high waterfall.

The fifth suite is on the upper level adjacent to the main house. The main house’s open design, flows through five large areas; the casual lounge; the dining area with its ornately carved Nicaraguan tables and chairs; the billiard area with its regulation slate table; and the well-stocked library. To the rear of these areas is the 1000 sq. ft. two-story well-equipped kitchen providing abundant space for group cooking.

About Robert or Joanne

It is said ......'you don’t choose your destiny… it chooses you.'

That is precisely what happened when we found Nicaragua and it found us. After “working” in the Canadian and international telecommunications industry as a senior executive, building high performance teams, I, Robert, started a journey of awareness and discovery that led to a recognition of the power of the universe and how each of us can make a difference in the world. For me, it was just a matter of where in this world could I make the biggest difference; as I believe that success is measured in making a difference in people’s lives. I am fascinated with the power of creativity and enjoy exploring new ways to interpret the power of attitude, the power of attraction and the theme…JUST BELIEVE

After looking in several areas in the world, a series of circumstances created the opportunity for Nicaragua, San Juan and Yankee beach, to find me. In January 2007, with a shared vision and a dream of creating, a unique and intimate retreat to enjoy the world’s developments, and a focal point for making a difference in the lives of the Nicaraguan people, construction of our magnificent home began.

My partner, Joanne joined me in a trip to Nicaragua and fell in love with everything she saw, particularly the people. She decided to resign from her work in Canada and join me in my journey and create a life together. She plans on making use of her extensive horticulture experience and training as a health care professional to help make a difference in the lives of the Nicas, a people that she feels are worthy of all of our attention.

She is the woman that takes my JUST BELIEVE and makes it JUST HAPPEN.

In September 2008, we along with her daughter Sara, moved to Nicaragua to complete the retreat and implement our commitment to make a difference in the lives of those we come in contact with.

Welcome to our home, ORQUIDEA del Sur, and the next stage of our journey.

Several horseback riding trails wander through mountain terrain or end on a sandy beach where you can enjoy a shore dinner.

Quiet beach is excellent for beach combing and boogie boarding

Notes

  • Chef is available. On site manager can arrange a wide variety of activities.
  • Orquidea del Sur also operates as a Bed and Breakfast. Daily rate is $200/150 per unit double occupancy plus breakfast, minimum stay 2 nights plus

    Special rates are available for multi unit stays.

    A full breakfast is included each morning with the above rates.
    Lunches and dinners are separate each day. We do not have a restaurant but our chef will cook up a meal each evening which we describe as “healthy home cooking with a Nicaraguan flair”. Lunches are from a small menu with specials each day. A full breakfast is available each morning at no extra charge.. a couple the other night described the food as the best they had had in Nicaragua. All the quests over the holidays were very complimentary …………..we had to throw out the chef’s hat because it would no longer fit!!!!!!!!!

    We have a wide variety of activities including horseback riding, swimming in the ocean or our large pool, lots of beaches and associated trails to hike, fishing (surf or ocean), Panga boat rides, canopy rides, surfing, massages, pedicures; or just find one of many nooks and absorb the sound of the waves and the birds and enjoy a good book .. or rest you eye lids. We will be pleased to coordinate any of these activities so all you need to think about is which one you want to do.

“MORE WELCOMING THAN A RESORT, MORE LUXURIOUS THAN

In planning our trip I was hoping for a bit of adventure, some culture and a lot of relaxation. It was a complete success thanks to Robert, Joanne and the staff at Orquidea Del Sur. Our contact via email prior to the trip gave me the confidence I needed, their response was always prompt and professional. Robert helped to orchestrate our travel and sightseeing on the way to, from and around SJDS. When we arrived at the gate I was immediately in awe of the property. Every detail is attended to. The photos paint an accurate picture but the reality is more than pixels can convey. We felt genuinely welcomed by the owners and graciously accommodated by the staff. I was most impressed by the way Robert and Joanne respect and care for their employees. I knew we would be cared for as well, not just serviced as paying guests. Orquidea has the exterior of a beautiful resort and the heart of a family.

“SUPERB BOUTIQUE INN”

In researching a place for a sunny break in Central America, I came across the Orquidea web site. I was struck by the stunning visuals and surprised that a property of this quality was available in Nica. After further research we spent a fabulous 2 weeks in Nicaragua, finishing our trip at Yankee Beach. The welcome was tremendous and all of our needs/wants were taken care of in a most professional manner. The hosts and staff are discreet and provide seamless service. Food was excellent-fresh and high quality. Weather was hot with breeze constantly available to assist the cooling effects of pool and multiple shady spots. The price point likely deters bargain hunters and increases the possibility of this being your private resort for a good part of your stay. Even at full occupancy privacy is assured and the multiple outdoor areas while conducive to convivial conversation also would provide ample niches for quiet reading or surfing the net. In closing, Robert and Joanne are very involved with their local community, with 4 full time and 6 part time employees, their reach is far. Their local projects support children accessing school (by providing shoes, back packs and supplies), self help projects upgrading local public facilities and transportation to teams and individuals using their well maintained vehicle. First time I have commented on travel advisor but compelled to do so by this couples genuine efforts in their business and community. (We did leave a generous tip for staff and enough money for Joanne to buy 2 more "school packs"-brought her to tears). Finally, 'Orquidea' means 'Orchid' but the name is not particularly “sticky" so book mark the page because anglophiles may have difficulty remembering it if they come to their site by chance.

“A BIT OF PARADISE!”

We were looking for an off-the-beaten track place in Central America this past march break. Nicaragua and Orquidea del Sur far exceeded our expectations. Orquidea del Sur is a beautiful and serene resort that offers a perfect venue for relaxation. The gardens, rooms, pool and view are beyond spectacular. We enjoyed our morning coffee and evening sunsets just outside our room, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our days were spent at the pool or reading/sleeping in a hammock. Breakfast was included with a very good selection. Meals were served on the upper patio; dinner under the stars. Robert, Joanne and their warm and friendly staff catered to all of our needs. They made our first trip outside of the Caribbean very easy and comfortable. Robert’s tour of the local village, survivor beach, and San Juan del Sur provided a cultural experience that we will always remember. The unexpected visit by the howler monkeys was quite a treat too!

OUTSTANDING

“My father and I take a yearly trip south of the boarder and this is the nicest/cleanest/coolest place we have stayed. The service is second to none! The property is situated about 10 min walk from Playa Yankee and about a 2 min drive. The views are awesome. We were the only guests there for 5 days and we were treated like royalty. There is no other place to stay in the San Juan Del Sur area!! “
