Our annual ladies wine jaunt (just two gals in need of a break from the city). We come up every year and usually stay at area hotels. This time we decided to give this a whirl. Soooooo glad we did! The house is situated right in the middle of wine country, so it is very convenient to tastings. We did not have an agenda so we just let our stay "unfold." Lisa gave us some wonderful suggestions, and we read guests recommendations...and every winery, restaurant, or trek we took turned out fabulous. The house has such a lovely feel to it, and we found ourselves just hanging out half the time.

We will definitely be going back. Thanks Lisa for your "perfect day" suggestion....it was just that!

This place is great, full stop.

The Retreat is well laid out for a couple to sprawl (two couples or a family would have to share the single bathroom), there are great views (you can see the fog roll up the valley), the sectional couches are leg-stretchingly supportive, and the beds and sheets are super-comfy. If you are trying to shed writer's block, or have a romantic getaway, or want a home base from which to launch some serious wine tasting, this is the place. Lisa and Randy may call it a retreat, or a cottage, but the actual size is that of a small house. Plenty of room.

If the night is clear, city slickers will appreciate just how pitch-black the night sky becomes. Looking up to see the slash of the Milky Way as the backdrop for the thousands of stars will make you almost dizzy. I can't remember the last time I saw a night sky like this. If you are staying in Paso proper, you won't get this view.

Just a couple things for first-time visitors:
1. The Retreat is located equidistant from Paso and Morro Bay, about 20 minutes' drive from each. That makes it great for day trips, but because you are not in town, you can't just pop out for some half-and-half for your morning coffee if you're on empty. You have to plan your itinerary accordingly.
2. You are in a bit of the wilderness, so if the idea of coyotes howling over the next hill or a spider on the shower curtain freaks you out, well, maybe you should stay at a Hampton Inn in San Luis Obispo. Not that the Retreat is some woodsy cabin, no way. It's all mod cons, all the way. But when you are in the wilderness, sometimes the wilderness pays a visit.

We would absolutely come back. Thanks for making this amazing place available!
Owner's Response: You are a wonderfully descriptive writer. The owl was hooting it up in the vineyard last night. Love that sound. About to make the 15 minute scenic drive to enjoy a gourmet lunch at Thomas Hill Organics … then back home to our "wilderness". :) Thanks for the thumbs up and come back and visit soon! L & R

On short notice because our plans had changed the day before we were to leave, the owners couldn't have been more helpful. The cottage is perfect and the views across the canyon quite wonderful.

Peaceful in Outstanding Setting

We knew we would stay here when we would come to California for my mother-in-law's funeral in Reedley, CA. The pictures, close proximity to the ocean (11 miles), and cooler temperatures made it a good choice to spend a few days prior to the funeral after flying to California from Minnesota. When Helen died recently at 108, I got in touch with Lisa and she had some dates open. We were not disappointed. We love to cook and enjoyed the kitchen and 2 lovely dinners overlooking the valley. The serenity and peacefulness of the location was just what we needed. And, some excellent wineries (Justin, Tablas Creek, Turley) made our dinners even more enjoyable. The drive down Old Creek Road to the ocean is outstanding and the quiet beach, at least at 8PM in mid-week, was just what we needed on the day we arrived.

We will definitely return with family or friends. Roger and Gini, Saint Paul, MN

Forget Hotels, Great Paso Robles Retreat

My husband and I and another couple live in the Bay Area and were looking to explore the Paso Robles Wine Country for a weekend getaway. After looking at all the hotel rates in the area, we thought we would consider renting a house or cottage instead to see if it would be more cost effective.

We came across the Artist Vineyard Cottage on VRBO and the reasonable rate, coupled with beautiful accommodations captured our attention right away. After a few emails with Lisa, the owner, everything was set. Lisa even sent us a package, which included detailed instructions on how to get to the house, along with a list of their favorite restaurants in the area and several pamphlets and brochures detailing all the wineries. Before we even arrived, we had all the wineries we wanted to hit circled on the map.

The real treat was when we arrived to the house. It was up atop a hill with a breathtaking view. Inside, everything was perfect -- updated amenities, ipod dock, movies, plenty of space for two couples for privacy and plenty of communal space to hang out in the living room. We stayed in the master suite and forgot to close the window shades before we went to bed. I woke up with the sunrise and it was one of my highlights of the trip. I even went outside to take pictures before heading back to bed for a few more hours sleep.

The location worked out perfect for us. It was within completely reasonable distance to the wineries, particularly those in the Northwest area of Paso (where we did most of our tasting), and it worked out to be perfect on Sunday morning when we checked out, as it was only 30 minutes from Hearst Castle on the coast where we went to finish off our trip before heading back to San Francisco.

If you are heading to Paso, definitely stay at the Artist's Vineyard Cottage. It will make the Paso experience that much more relaxing and memorable.

Perched atop the Stromsoe Vineyard, a producing 5 acre vineyard of Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio, you'll enjoy a country retreat setting. It's only 2 minutes to the first wine tasting opportunity on the 'west side' in the York Mountain AVA. Our location is generally 15 degrees cooler than downtown Paso in the summer. You can visit dozens and dozens of fine wineries within a 10 mile radius. Be sure to take a sunset stroll on one of our uncrowded, pristine beaches less than 15 minutes from your door!

Close proximity to downtown Paso, its wonderful restaurants and wine events - this location has it all!

Other Activities: Boating, basketball court, shopping, kayaking, wildlife viewing, health/beauty spa, hot air ballooning
