In 1969 as a young professor at the University of Texas, Philip Hendren bought the historic Tarrytown residence known as 'River Oaks Farm'. It dates back to 1906 as one of the many stone structures along Scenic Drive, built from the rubble left after the failure of the earth-fill dam now known as the Tom Miller Dam. The original three-story stone structure is still standing and was built by the famous Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at U.T. was named. He and Mrs. Batts (who was an artist) used it as their fishing and art-studio retreat. As a lover of architectural history, Hendren has maintained the character of the estate and loves to tell the many legends and stories of the interesting people who have lived at or visited River Oaks Farm. Also located on the two acre property is a smaller cottage suitable for four guests which is
homeaway property #931723, if you are trying to group guests together using both homes or possibly are looking for a smaller property.
Some History ... Judge Batts: This property was first owned by Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at the University of Texas was named. He was a
Texas Supreme Court judge and was famous for being the lawyer who fought to get the powerful railroad companies to
return their enormous land and right-of-way holdings back to Texas. He created the 'Railroad Commission' which even today represents a powerful force in Texas State operations. The building known as the 'Studio' functioned as a retreat for the Judge and his wife, who was an artist. Her paintings of flowers can still be seen on the original hand-hewn beams on the lower floor of the 'Studio'.
Parties and special events: River Oaks Farm is a great place for small parties and special events that don't require lots of parking....e.g. more than 10 cars.
For registered guests there is an honor system charge of $10.00 per guest. If there is to be live music outdoors there is an electrical set-up fee of $100.00. Please check with Linda or Philip well ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements.
For non-registered guests the minimum charge is $500.00 per event plus the $75.00 cleanup fee.
(For events that need more parking a valet service is available. Please speak to the valet service attendant at the nearby
'Hula Hut' restaurant.)
This historic home in Tarrytown is 5 minutes from downtown Austin and a 5 minute walk to the water-side 'Hula Hut' restaurant...on Lake Austin. The beautiful museum known as 'Laguna Gloria' is also nearby.
