Photos and Description of the Austin vacation lodge rental 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 4

In 1969 as a young professor at the University of Texas, Philip Hendren bought the historic Tarrytown residence known as 'River Oaks Farm'. It dates back to 1906 as one of the many stone structures along Scenic Drive, built from the rubble left after the failure of the earth-fill dam now known as the Tom Miller Dam. The original three-story stone structure is still standing and was built by the famous Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at U.T. was named. He and Mrs. Batts (who was an artist) used it as their fishing and art-studio retreat. As a lover of architectural history, Hendren has maintained the character of the estate and loves to tell the many legends and stories of the interesting people who have lived at or visited River Oaks Farm.

Notes: Courtyard dining under the ancient Oak tree is highly recommended and easily accomplished by use of the pass-through window next to the fireplace. During the cool months the outdoor fireplace is a wonderful mood setting element and firewood and log-lighters are provided. A famous architect from San Antonio, O'Neill Ford once declared the Studio which borders the courtyard on the north as 'the best damn piece of architecture in Texas'!

Further details for this vacation lodge rental in Austin, Texas

Some History ... Judge Batts: This property was first owned by Judge Batts after whom 'Batts Hall' at the University of Texas was named. He was a Texas Supreme Court judge and was famous for being the lawyer who fought to get the powerful railroad companies to return their enormous land and right-of-way holdings back to Texas. He created the 'Railroad Commission' which even today represents a powerful force in Texas State operations. The building known as the 'Studio' functioned as a retreat for the Judge and his wife, who was an artist. Her paintings of flowers can still be seen on the original hand-hewn beams on the lower floor of the 'Studio'.

Awesome place to stay..........

Review Submitted: December 4, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2009
My wife and I spent a week in the main house after Thanksgiving. We had a few warm and sunny days - sitting out on the decks and enjoying the wonderful Austin weather and scenery; and we had a few cold and rainy days - relaxing around the fire and enjoying the serenity . I don't know which ones we enjoyed the most. The house itself is a real treat - lots of different "spaces" to enjoy and plenty of room for all. The convenience to downtown Austin is a real plus, but we were enjoying the house so much that we did not venture out as much as we thought we would. - a great place for entertaining, either inside or outside. - a great neighborhood. - beautiful scenery. We'll come back and highly recommend to all our friends. Thanks Phillip and Linda for providing this place.

Restful, fun, unique historical home

Review Submitted: November 12, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
Although our stay was rather short, we were able to quickly recover from our travel in the restful and scenic neighborhood around this home. Off-street gated parking was convenient for moving luggage and people in and out of the house, while the quiet live-oak lined streets made for a nice stroll viewing beautiful properties in the neighborhood. The interior is fittingly rustic, conforming to the European country look of the exterior. We particularly enjoyed the proximity of Lake Austin as we love being near the water wherever we stay. The owners were very gracious in our contacts with them and provided everything we needed for our stay. Finding the house was not a problem as it is just a few blocks from the Mo-Pac highway close to a major access street to the neighborhood. Paraphrasing General Douglas MacArthur, "We shall return".
