About The Owner

To briefly escape the hubbub of New York in 2002, I spent two weeks with my best cousin in Vermont. For months after I returned to NY I dreamed of living in Vermont. A year later, thanks to the Internet, I was able to make my dream come true. I bought the property right next door to my cousins place and moved to Vermont for good. A 25-year veteran of the higher education publishing industry, I no longer have to live where the company I work for is located. I telecommute.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2008

Why The Owner chose Granville

My brother liked to come to Vermont in the summer to escape the Florida heat, but he is deathly allergic to dogs and cats and since my cousin and I both have pets, he had to stay in hotels. So in 2008 I built a guest cottage for him on my property. He uses it for a week in summer and a week in winter and the rest of the time (to help pay for it) I am renting it to vacationers.

What makes this cottage unique

I love participating in the small town social life of Granville. But what I love most about my new life here is that I can work and vacation in the same place. In the summer I can swim twice a day if I want to, work in my vegetable and flower gardens, go for long walks, hang out with my cousin and her horses, and still put in a respectable day’s work at the computer. I work longer hours in the winter, but still get plenty of exercise walking, show shoeing, and snow shoveling. My son and his family love it here in summer, but even more in winter as they are avid skiers. So I always seem to have family visits on the horizon.

Perfect location, perfect host

  • 5 of 5
My spouse and I have been travelling to Vermont for 30 years.

Just discovered Mary's little piece of paradise this year, spent 10 nights in July with our teen aged daughter.

Will definitely be returning in both summer and winter. Close to everything, yet perfectly secluded.

Mary is the perfect host, very gracious and welcoming, along with her dog Sunny and cat Taffy.

Fresh salad greens from the garden were appreciated.

Great private swimming pond, fire pit and perfectly equipped cottage. Our daughter loved her little loft which soon became her nest.

Chickens and rooster across the road very entertaining and the 3 dozen fresh eggs were the best we have ever eaten.

Thanks Mary

A great relaxing long week-end away from it all

  • 5 of 5
I have always loved Vermont and this visit is no different. I liked the cottage and the location is great.

There a several wonderful places for hiking within 15-20 minutes away from the house. We loved the hike along the waterfall. We took a drive to Burlington one night and visited Ben and Jerry Factory. The cottage is in idyllic, a bit isolated location, but it is a true "away from it all" logging. It is 10 minutes from route 100, which is the scenic road here in Vermont, absolutely amazing.

This cottage itself is well equipped with everything you need for basic cooking. The size of the cottage is not big, but it is perfect for a couple, or a couple with one or two children. The children have their own loft to sleep in. There is TV with multiple channels in case you are stuck at home on a rainy day. If you stay in this cottage, buy eggs from Mary's neighbor Diane. The chickens and roosters are outside all day. The eggs are divine.

Mary is a great host and provided everything that we needed without being intrusive. We enjoyed staying there and are looking forward to return.

Perfect Cottage in Vermont

  • 5 of 5
This is a perfect place to stay to get away. 4 of us just spent this past weekend at Mary's cottage and absolutely loved it (we barely wanted to leave)! It is so taken care of & it has everything you could possibly need! It was a short drive to Sugarbush Mountain where we went skiing. I cannot wait to return in the summer, to go swimming in the big crystal clear lake in the back yard! Totally recommend, you will not be disappointed, I promise!! The home owner is a sweetheart and is there to help with whatever questions you might have about the area. 100% will return~ Thanks for a great weekend!

Great property in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5
This is a beautiful property in a fantastic location to explore Vermont. It is only a few minutes of Route 100 and there is easy access to Burlington, Stowe, Appalachian Gap, Waitsfield etc. The property has everything you could need and the owner is really friendly and helpful. The grounds are great for kids, with plenty of play equipment and a pond. The fire pit is great for barbecuing on a warm evening. If you are travelling with a toddler then the mezzanine bedroom is probably unsuitable as it is hard to block off the spiral staircase. However, we just put our daughter in the main bedroom and slept on the futon in the lounge, which was comfortable enough. We would highly recommend this property and would happily return.

Summer retreat

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I drove here in our rental car and were a little worried about it after we'd heard about all the recent flooding in Vermont. Some roads were affected but we made it to this pretty little cottage. The road to the cottage is a little rough compared to what us city dwellers are used to but the car was okay.

We spent a very enjoyable 6 nights at the cottage. Mary is an excellent host - so friendly and helpful and a nice person to talk to. She grows her own salad greens and very kindly gave us some one evening. She was always there to help if we needed anything.

The cottage is very clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Our weather was mixed so when it rained we enjoyed staying in watching the TV which has an amazing selection of channels. Films without commercial breaks - bliss! Being from the UK, that's something we appreciate. Due to the weather, my husband only managed one dip in the pond but he found it very refreshing. We sat out on the deck too which was lovely. We would have used it more had the weather been better. We didn't use the fire pit so ate in mostly - liked the big fridge.

The local supermarket is about 30 minutes drive away so it's best to buy enough to keep you going for a few days.

We enjoyed our visit to the Shelburne Museum and driving around finding covered bridges in quaint little towns. We were surprised to discover that we could visit wineries in Vermont. We enjoyed the tastings available and bought some to enjoy back at the cottage. We will always remember our visit to this beautiful green State.

Down time in a serene place

  • 5 of 5
I spent 4 relaxing nights at Mary's cottage and found it to be the perfect retreat for me, my partner and his 2 children. We soaked up the sun and loved every minute spent by the lake swimming, floating, kayaking and admiring the frogs and salamanders. We played badminton, cooked on the fire pit and sat under the stars. Anyone looking for peace and quiet will find it there. Mary is gracious and welcoming-our 10 year old loved feeding her cousin's horses and we bought eggs from her neighbor which were delicious. I would absolutely recommend this cottage and think it's perfect for a couple, small family or group of friends. We went for a couple excursions but I could have stayed at the cottage the entire time and been quite content. We found the cottage well equipped for the basic cooking we did and comfortable for lounging and being together. The deck off the bedroom is another good space for eating, sitting and reading. If you appreciate the peaceful, green beauty that is Vermont-you will find it at Mary's cottage!
