Overview

Chocolate Hole Villa Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, sleeps 4

Sopra Mare (Above The Sea) is a stunning cliff villa, built on solid native rock set atop Maria Bluff with crashing surf below. This unique home offers gated privacy yet has a one mile level walking circuit on paved roads where you may sip your morning coffee and watch iguana's cross your path. The home is continually cooled by a slight gentle breeze which generally assures no biting insects. Less than five minutes to town of Cruz Bay which offers excellent jazz at several locations on Saturday and Sunday including the famous Beach Bar - partial setting for my book about St. John 'Keep Left.' Shopping and night life abound in Cruz Bay.

Your villa is a world apart from noise and traffic; yet three minutes to the Weston Hotel, it's sandy beach and great Sunday Brunches. Enjoy the song of the tree frogs late at night and wake to the hummingbirds making a feast on Sopra Mare flowers. Ceiling fans in all rooms and full individual frosty air conditioning in each bedroom.

Suitability:
  • children welcome
  • non smoking only
  • pets not allowed

Why Mike Mullen 'Mulley' chose Chocolate Hole

I actually got to St. John by mistake after over bidding at a charity event in Vail, Colorado about six years ago. This was the result of definitely drinking way too much wine by the time the auction began. By morning after they presented me with a bill for the event I had purchased two TV's, a shotgun, a pink Harley Davis Motorcycle and 7 nights in the Virgin Islands! But I have never been sorry about the trip and as a result it has led me on a long and winding road of adventure!

St. John is very unique, approximately 60% of the island is National Park with numerous hiking and walking trails. Old sugar plantations dot the island. The more than forty beaches are incredible, most with pure white sand. The Caribbean water is always warm and crystal clear, often you can see fifty feet down with an abundance of sea life. The people of St. John are exceptionally friendly and eager to help you enjoy your island experience.

What makes this villa unique

The home is secluded behind a private gate with zero steps to access - something nearly unheard of on St. John. Lush landscape awaits you and soon several lime and banana trees will provide a source for frosty drinks. The living room and master bedroom have a panorama twenty foot expansive view achieved by opening one set of folding doors. Complete entertainment with a 34' plasma TV, CD, DVD, IPOD system awaits your enjoyment and of course WIFI throughout. The kitchen has granite counters, stainless steel appliances and everything a chef would require to whip up a gourmet meal. Or you can dine al fresco under the stars on a Brown Jordan table and matching chairs. A stainless steel commercial radiant bbq with separate burner is steps away. As you are on the ocean its a great pleasure to occasionally see whales, dolphin and giant turtles swimming below you. Once night falls, watch the cruise ships slowly sail across your view on the way to their next foreign port. As you are facing directly south, the villa receives all day sun allowing the pool to remain at 80 degrees.

A Wonderful Week in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had a beautiful week at Sopre Mare. This was our first stay at SM but I have visited St John for many years. The villa was very well equipped and the location was absolutely gorgeous. There were several times I told myself I felt we weren't taking enough advantage of the villa, because we were constantly out exploring the beaches and the rest of St John. There are not many places that you can sit and read a book and truly feel like you are looking at a post card.

The owner is fantastic in his responsiveness and his property manager Colleen makes sure you are settled in.

The villa is an 8 minute drive from town and is such a peaceful place to return to at night. We had a spectacular time and plan on returning to Sopre Mare without a doubt on our next visit to this beautiful island.

Never disappoints!

  • 5 of 5

This is our fourth stay at Sopre Mare and we are always dumbstruck with how beautiful both the house and the setting are upon our arrival. Mike makes sure the house is in tip top shape with everything ready for you. He even provides a wonderful roast chicken and salad dinner in the refrigerator should you be too tired to go out the first night. Colleen (Manager) was very responsive in providing us with beach bags upon our request. The first two days, we never even went to the beach - the location was so warm and pleasant (and welcome after the Northeast winter we had had). Finally ventured out, but Sopre Mare was such a welcome sight returning home every night. There is no better view from sunup to sunset! Great place to just unwind and relax.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Sopra Mara. The owner. Mike, was easy to work with before our arrival, responding quickly to emails. The home is clean, comfortable, open, light and has spectacular views, including sunrises and sunsets. We loved sleeping with our door wide open to the sound of the surf and with warm breezes washing over us. If you get tired of the beaches or want a late night dip, the pool awaits. The kitchen is well stocked and the owner even provided food for our first meal. All-in-all a fabulous experience and we highly recommend Sopra Mara.

Ringing in the New Year--Julie

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week in paradise, staying at Sopra Mare for our first visit to St. John between Christmas and New Years. Awakening each morning to the incredible view from the villa was a glorious way to start the day. Our family of five, with children ages 19, 18, and 16, enjoyed exploring different beaches each day and snorkeling. We saw an incredible variety of fish, a stingray, stunning coral, and starfish. Relaxing in the pool, reading, enjoying family time, and taking in the sunsets at Sopra Mare were also highlights of our trip. The villa is well located, close to Cruz Bay, grocery stores, etc... yet you feel as though you are tucked away in your own world. Mike Mullen is enthusiastic about St. John and helpful when emailing about reservations and travel plans. I am very glad we took him up on his advice to rent a jeep. Colleen, his property manager, welcomed us, gave us tips on beaches and restaurants, and responded quickly when we needed to have a couple of things taken care of at the villa. Sopra Mare is a wonderful spot in an idyllic setting and one I would love to return to anytime, but especially now, as I write this from Michigan where the low and the high temperatures today are 9 degrees!

Sopra Mare

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) just returned from a week of vacation over the Christmas holiday on St. John, where we stayed at Sopra Mare for the first time. From the outset, planning this vacation was terrifically easy, mainly because Mike responded to emails right away allowing us to confirm reservations and make travel plans easily. Though we have been to St. John before, we had never stayed on the island and it was nice to have both Mike and the property manager, Colleen, available to answer questions before the trip. Colleen led us to the Sopra Mare and helped us settle in. The views along the drive were spectacular. Sopra Mare sits atop a bluff overlooking the ocean with panoramic views which are absolutely gorgeous. We were incredulous when we first saw the pool and the deck/balcony. The ocean side of the property is virtually a moveable window/door that opens completely to the outside. The kitchen was large and updated with granite countertops and every appliance you could need, in addition to the grill outside. It was a perfect place to cook and eat outside on the patio. Mike was kind enough to leave us a dinner for the first night. We could easily have stayed at the villa all day by the pool, but we rented a jeep and drove to different beaches/excursions each day, coming back to the villa in the late afternoon for drinks by the pool while the kids swam. The kids (age 6 and 8) absolutely loved swimming there and spent hours in the pool each afternoon. There is free wireless, which was very helpful, as well as a bluetooth speaker to play your music through. Though there is hardly a need to watch any TV, there were hundreds of channels available to watch on the flat screen in the living room. We ate virtually all our meals outside on the patio. The house has three bathrooms, one for each bedroom and an additional bathroom on the ground floor that opens to the pool and which our kids jokingly called our "family changing area." There is also a shower out by the pool to rinse off with before coming inside. Mike supplied both bath towels and beach towels. The house was comfortable and we loved reading in the living room/balcony after the sun set. The ceiling fans in the rooms keep the rooms from getting too hot, but there is also A/C in the two bedrooms which we needed to use most, but not all, nights to keep from getting too hot. The beds were comfortable and we had no trouble sleeping. All in all it was fantastic!

Amazing Week at Sopra Mare!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our first visit to St. John. Traveling with our two adult children, we all fell in love with the island and Sopra Mare could not have been a more perfect choice! It is a lovely villa complete with every amenity you could want or need, beautiful decor, cozy and comfortable. The walls in the living room and master bedroom are sliding doors that open to the the most spectacular views and Caribbean breezes. Waking each morning to the sun rising and watching the amazing sunsets at the end of the day was surreal. The pool was wonderful for a dip in the morning before exploring the island or at night with the colorful pool lights. We grilled a few nights and dined by the pool; so relaxing. The location is perfect! It's less than 10 minutes to Cruz Bay for shopping, fun bars and restaurants, yet far away enough to be quiet and private. It is a short (and thrilling) drive to any one of the spectacular beaches on the island. Mike was great to communicate with ( we hope to meet him next time!) Colleen met us at the dock, took us to get the jeep rental and then to the villa. She was terrific and very informative. We would definitely return to Sopra Mare! It was a perfect week. Paradise!
