I fell in love with Paris when I was 18 and came to study Law at Nanterre University, leaving Switzerland where I was raised.
Years after, as I modeled around the world, leaving my Saint-Germain-des-Prés apartment early in the morning, the taxi drives to the airport, would take me across the bridge from the Left Bank to the Right Bank, through the Island. Living in the Ile Saint-Louis was absolutely out of my reach then, but it always was my fantasy. I was in awe of the impressionist paintings of Monet representing the Seine in the morning and the bridges. The pink-grey lights of dawn, the golden illumination at night, triggered an intense sense of beauty, peace, serenity and elegance.
Years after, when we found this dream place, it had been owned by the same Parisian lady, for over 50 years ( Paula received it as a wedding present from her father when she was twenty one). We fell in love with her, and her place. Needless to say it was like awakening the Sleeping Beauty. It needed to come to modern life, while preserving its original 'cachet'.
It was an immense privilege and a great joy to give a second life to this rare and full of charm haven, and I must say that sharing it with our lovely guests and friends has also been a great privilege and a joy.
Alina Ventura purchased this apartment in 1999
Our love for this garden, this enchanting haven, in the middle of this dream Island...Paris and love, the best combination in the world!!!! The location in not the least of the conveniences and charm of this unique place on the Island.
Whether seating in the dining-room, or in the living-room, or lying in bed, we always enjoy the serenity of the place. We read in peace and silence. When friends stop by, we seat in the garden and sip a cocktail or have tea in the afternoon while listening to Edith Piaf 'La Vie en Rose'. When we want to go to museums or shopping we just ride our bikes to the Place des Vosges or to Musée Beaubourg, or go to Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It's like two minutes from everything that represents Paris to us.
My family and I checked in, including 2 teens and an 8 year old, on August 16, and we were blown away by how perfect the location was, how spacious and well-equipped the apartment is, the amazing huge private garden, and Alina’s beautiful art and furniture. We did not even mind that we arrived as the last guests were still in the throws of packing and leaving (turned out we are from the same home town in the U.S.). We left our bags and took a boat tour on the Seine to kill a few hours. We still did not mind that no one knew the apartment needed to be cleaned or the linens changed. Willie was sweet and accommodating on the phone. I found beautiful, ultra-soft, cotton linens for all the beds and remade them happily, imagining this was my lovely apartment! The cleaning crew came the next day, so there was really no issue. It would have been nice if the washer had been working, but we successfully washed key items in the kitchen sink and used the dryer to finish the laundry. We also appreciated finding some Coke, coffee, butter, etc. in the fridge, ample cleaning supplies, and TP, and we tried to leave a decent amount of various useful items when we left…a nice system!
I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Paris now, and I’m afraid my kids will have a tough time at youth hostels in the future knowing how wonderful it was to live like a local in the perfect location in Paris. The shops, the bakery, the “smelly cheese shop” with the amazing ham, the gelato and Berthillion made our street the place to be and live like a Parisian. The added bonus of passing Notre Dame almost every time we wandered out and the easy-access Metro stations all around perfected the experience.
We will be back, Alina, and, hopefully, for more than 5 nights next time. Many thanks for sharing such a lovely apartment.
The apartment was the perfect size for six people, and the central location was great. The photos accurately portrayed the ambiance and the amenities--it was clean, comfortable, and beautiful. Although our stay was in August, the apartment remained cool. We used the garden frequently, and even entertained. It made a memorable vacation! Thank you Alina!
I wanted to write to say thank you for our wonderful stay in your Paris apartment. The apartment was even more beautiful in person than the photos on your listing, and our time there was just perfect. Ile St. Louis is such a magical neighborhood and our entire group agreed we were staying in the prettiest neighborhood in Paris.
We checked out yesterday morning and returned the key to Abdel's Market. We tried to leave the apartment as we found it (we vacuumed and tried to tidy up as much as possible), and I hope the condition is satisfactory to you. I apologize about the confusion over the washing machine - I we were just a bit confused about the European appliance - and it worked just fine the rest of our stay.
Thank you again for your hospitality, and we hope to have the opportunity to stay in your amazing home again.
What a find! Apartment is beautiful, and the garden is amazing! Your own private retreat in the middle of Paris. A perfect balance to the crowds one encounters in the city. Gourmet kitchen well-appointed for cooking some of the treats one finds at the shops nearby. Beautiful furnishings. Owner is a most gracious host! Our children said that the apartment was their favorite part of our stay in Paris.
Amazing location in the most beautiful city. Too many tourists and too much rain during our short stay made the convenience of the apartment all the more appreciated.
Everything is steps away. We had divine croissants and baguettes every morning from the boulangerie a few doors away. The grocery store was across the street. The apartment is spacious, great for our family of 5 adults. The kitchen is well-equipped. The beds are comfortable. While not usable in the rain, the apartment has French doors to the huge, private garden which we could open to get fresh air. I can't imagine how great it would be in warmer weather.
All in all, a wonderful experience. Merci mille fois to Alina.
The apartment was reasonably spacious and in a good location. However, for the price we paid for our one-week stay, we expected comfortable accommodations in good working condition. There were a few problems.
For example: 1) The manager (Hansel) told us when we arrived that the refrigerator didn't work. When asked when it would be repaired, he shrugged his shoulders and suggested we store our food outside; 2) Both twin bed mattress supports were visibly sagging which was uncomfortable, in spite of the newer mattresses. On our last night, one new support was brought in which didn't fit the bed; 3) The third "bedroom" was little more than a small office with a convertible sofa which, when opened, you couldn't walk around. The sofa mattress was thin and very uncomfortable. Alina later told us that it was ten years old and needed to be replaced which didn't happen during our week-long stay. (The bed in the master bedroom, however, was comfortable); 4) There were noxious sewer fumes coming up from the toilet in the master bathroom during our entire stay; 5) There were numerous other less pressing, but still annoying, issues.
We tried to reach Alina multiple times, beginning on the day we arrived, but didn't hear from her until three days later (Hansel never returned our calls). We also e-mailed a detailed description and pictures of each problem. When she finally called, she was responsive and sent two different repairmen (once with Hansel) to assess and, we thought, fix the problems. We were asked to wait for repairmen on two separate occasions (one was 2 hours late) and respond to her many requests for additional information. We believe her intensions were good but this isn't how we wanted to spend our time in Paris. In spite of this inconvenience, only two of the most minor problems were repaired. We respectfully suggested a 50% refund along with the full amount of our deposit. After 3 weeks, and multiple requests, we received the full deposit and a 20% refund.
It could have been a much more positive experience had the apartment been better maintained.
