Quoted from our house guestbook: "The house is a beautiful vintage Hawaii home with all the amenties, very clean. The cool breeze is constant and welcome in the summer heat. We enjoyed our stay very much. Some bicycles would be a plus."
This was a geogeous well kept home. Look out the front patio doors to the perfect beach and ocean only 50 steps away. The pool and hotub out back was well used by our children. The house manager was very professional throughout making sure we had all the information we needed before we left home, and when we arrived a phone call asking us how things were and encouraging us to make good use of the information book that gave all the best local information for grocery stores and restaurants etc. There was even a nice welcome basket of goodies waiting for us. Thanks so much for the wonderful family memories made here. We will be back for sure
This house was absolutely perfect. Large enough to sleep eight people comfortably; with a pool and hot tub; a nice front porch and front yard, and a barbecure area from which you can look directly onto the beach; and, of coruse, it's on the best beach on Oahu, perfect for families and kids. It has beach towels, boogie boards, umbrellas, and eveything else you might need to bring to the beach. And as an added plus, Uta is extremely friendly and helpful. We can wait to come back!
Our group of 7 adults traveled from LA to Kailua for our friend's 50th birthday celebration. We researched and researched rental homes as we were determined to have an "epic" stay. Well, Kalaka on the Beach certainly is epic! It has a beautiful layout with a central gathering space that opens out to the lanai, surrounded by three en suite bedrooms. An additional set of twin beds is in a little room off the master bedroom (although there is only a shoji screen for a little privacy). I was concerned that the photos on the web might make the home look bigger than it is, but I was pleasantly surprised. Kalaka on the Beach is VERY spacious--in fact, we nicknamed her "the mansion." In addition, you are literally steps away from the beach. The kitchen is well-equipped and even has an extra small refrigerator to get those adult beverages really cold. Beach towels, outdoor chairs, boogie boards, and sun screen are all provided at no extra cost. It was a fun little bonus that President Obama and his family were staying a mere 1.6 miles up the beach. We walked up most evenings, nodded "hi" to the Coast Guards on duty, and strolled back to our home away from home. The manager, Uta, is a gem and made everything easy. Highly recommended!
I grew up in Kailua so coming to Oahu and spending time on Kailua Beach was a must. The Kalaka house was so perfect for us and exceeded our expectations for our week stay! Our group had 8 total - our family of 4 (includes children ages 4 and 6), a set of grandparents (age 70+) and 2 adult babysitters (age 20+). We had 2 rental cars and were very thankful the owners had cleared out the garage. The first thing I noticed was the cleanliness of the house. The cleaning crew does a fantastic job. I'm picky and the house was immaculate. Granted the house is old with it's quirks but nothing more than stubborn sliding doors or doors that would latch right away.
There was a plethora of clean beach/bath towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, and sand toys. The beds were very comfortable with plenty of pillows. The kitchen was more than adequately stocked with everything including some basic pantry items including coffee which was a plus! With 2 small kids we truly appreciated having the washer and dryer. We also liked the ability of connecting our phone or iPad to play music.
My favorite part was playing at the beach and the convenience of it being in the back yard. Very helpful with a 4 and 6 year old who want a change of scenery constantly. We also liked hanging out on the lanai in the shade too. We all loved hanging out at the house although we did venture out as well. We had dinner at Baci Bistro in Kailua - pretty good food but didn't warrant a return trip IMO, Buzz's Steakhouse for lunch which is always great, Island Snow for shave ice as well as Matsumotos in Haleiwa. Finally dinner at Alan Wongs in Honolulu - totally worth the splurge and we'd return again and again! The best ahi poke I had was from Tamura Wine shop in Aikahi Park Shopping Center. Super yummy and really good wine selection and prices. We shopped locally in Kailua and found some of the best treasures.
We arrived on a day where there was a bad storm and Uta and the owners were very responsive in helping with cleaning out the pool as we couldn't find the pool net. One of the owners gave us a brief history of the house which was fascinating. We loved hearing the background of the home. We could tell the owners take great care of the place and Uta the rental manager is wonderful! Between them and the house itself we would love to come back to this very spot. Finally thank you for the welcome basket of goodies which were gobbled up in a few days.
The house itself was very traditional and cozy. The view was amazing (how can it not if you're right on the beach!) Not only is it on the nicest stretch of beach, but the house has it all and is exactly as shown on the site. Lots of lawn chairs, beach chairs, boogie boards so we really enjoyed the beach and pool. The beds are super comfortable and the addition of the pool, bbq, cruiser bikes and kayaks - made this trip truly the memory of a lifetime.
Uta made it so easy for us to check in and out. We would definitely come back here again.
This definitely was a beautiful house and location. Walked out the back door to the most gorgeous beach. We had friends staying in the Hilton in Waikiki. They choose our beach to spend a lot of their time. This beach would suit kids of all ages. Boogie boarding was awesome for my 10 and 12 year old. U can rent kayaks in Kailua town. Very easy. Older kids could try kite surfing(just guessed name) We enjoyed watching them out there. Groceries and restaurants are just a few minutes away by car. Kids loved the pool, huge pass through window in kitchen opened up. Perfect kids could swim whilst we cooked dinner. Sun rises were beautiful. Bedrooms were very spacious. We cannot wait to return. U can't get a better location or house.
