Step from your car and take a breath of cool mountain air. Hard to believe you’re 28 miles from Charlottesville, eighty-nine miles from Washington. The edge of the wild, this land borders Shenandoah National Forest, the most populous black bear country on the East Coast, with stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains and the tiny, picturesque community of Graves Mill in the valley below. If you prefer hiking mountain trails, fishing a trout stream or sipping a drink on the wide two-story porch, this is the spot. Wintering in? Let it snow. The whole-house generator automatically keeps things cozy in the event of power outage. Add a steam sauna, two-person Jacuzzi with a view, Rumford fireplace in the Great Room and winter becomes a dreamer's paradise. Springtime brings Mountain Laurel and eagles. Summer offers cool relief from the flatlands. Then comes Autumn, a season you have to truly see to believe.

Recently, my wife and I and three other couples stayed at this beautiful home! The place was incredibly breathtaking with the mountain views. The interior was very clean and was very well built. I met the owner and he was very courteous, helpful and polite. He actually designed the place himself, and he did a wonderful job!
People in our group especially liked the fireplace, the rain shower, the sauna, and the amazing rooms (especially the master bedroom and the cottage adjacent to the house). You know you're staying at a great place when you and your friends start talking about returning the following year. We loved the place and recommend it to anybody looking for a relaxing getaway, whether it's with your family or a group of friends.
My family spent Christmas 2014 at this wonderful home/compound. From the moment we arrived when the owner met us....with a fire in the fireplace and the house already decorated for Christmas....until the moment we left, I have to say that everything was just perfect! The house is fantastic, it was clearly designed and constructed with great thought and high standards. The views to the valley below are wonderful. There is so much to do in the area also that we were always doing something fun. I want to personally thank the owners, the Twombleys, they are tremendous to work with. Everyone in my family strongly recommends their lovely and comfortable home!!!
The large, well-equipped house and the one room cottage were perfect for our family's reunion. Lots of room, gourmet kitchen, comfy beds, and close to wonderful walking trails.
We had a wonderful time at this house with our small group from church. The house had beautiful views, great amenities, and was plenty spacious for our group of 10 adults. Highly recommended!
We were lucky to find this beautiful house to host a women's weekend getaway. It is very roomy with a fully appointed kitchen and two outside porches from which to enjoy a spectacular view of the valley below.
We spent the weekend hiking Old Rag, the Graves Mill Trail and visiting Early Mountain Winery which is a short distance away. We loved the house so much we arranged to spend most of our time there, bringing in massage therapists and a personal chef for some ultimate pampering!
Couldn't have asked for nicer or more flexible service from the owners. We will definitely be back!
This house is absolutely beautiful and extremely comfortable! We were a family of four sub-families, including 7 adults and 3 young children. Everyone had enough space to spread out. We could be as private as we needed and gather together for meals or to play games.
This house, cottage and grounds are well maintained. A lot of thought has gone into anticipating guests' needs. Every imaginable kitchen gadget is provided as well as numerous games and more books than we could count!
If there is a down side it would be the distance you have to go to get to the nearest grocery. While it is a bit of a drive (like 30-40 mins.), once we made our big shopping trip and got back to the house, we were more than glad to be away from civilization. It is so quiet here! And at night the stars shine very brightly and can be viewed through the amazing telescope upstairs!
Another minor issue is the wifi/cell reception. If more than one person is using wifi it is extremely slow. But if you're on vacation to get away from everything, wifi isn't that big of a deal anyway.
Be sure to check out the couple of very nice wineries nearby that offer excellent tastings. Also, make sure you go for a walk/hike on any of the numerous paths/trails. There are a couple of easy ones close by and some more difficult ones you can drive to.
We as a family highly recommend this property. Hopefully we will be able to return one day!
The property is located about a mile from Graves Mill, VA and is just off of Bluff Mountain Road, bordering on the Shenanndoah National Park. The area is lovely and unspoiled, very scenic, with easy and close access to the Rapidan and Conway Rivers as well as Graves Mill hiking trail.
Other Activities: Antiquing, music festivals, seasonal festivals, historic sites, mountain trail hiking, trout fishing, swimming, rafting, canoeing.
