Photos and Description of the Kennebunk Beach vacation house rental
Contemporary House, 3-5 Bedrooms, 2-3 Baths, Sleep 6-10

Why My Place is So Special

NEW 2013. You now have the option of having the Pool House too! Through a breezeway, friends, guests or additional family can have their own space with two large bedrooms, one with a gorgeous view towards the ocean. They also have their own breakfast nook, a red and natural wood sunroom where they will think they are outdoors. And it leads right to the pool. The Pool House can only rented in conjunction with the Great Blue Heron. With the addition of more bedrooms, and at the request of some guests, we are mowing an area on a flat field adjacent to one side of the house for ball games.

Calling our beach one of the finest is not an overstatement. The sand is soft, white and plentiful. The surf has enough oomph to keep you mindful, but perhaps the best part of this mile long beach is privacy. Sometimes you may even find yourself alone when you take a morning or evening walk.

Crescent Surf Beach is grounded at one end by a turn-of-the century, enormous cottage built by my great-grandfather and at the other by a conservation area for Least Terns and Piping Plovers my mother donated to the Rachel Carson Preserve. Beyond the nesting birds, warmer waters of Little River head to the sea twice daily. Fishermen cast off the shore or wade out to catch strippers at Little River; they fish from Hart's Rocks in front of the Big House or at neighboring Mousam River.

Your house, called Great Blue Heron, is so filled with light that the professional photographer who took the shots for VRBO said, 'This is the only place where I've never had to turn on lights to do a shoot.' The furniture is new, attractive and comfortable. Some of my guests delight in studying the many works of art in the house.

It takes five minutes walking over a dirt, tree-lined road and over a short grassy path to reach the beach.

The in-ground 18 by 30 foot pool with an outdoor hot and cold shower, provides for real swimming and quick dips. A solar roll back cover keeps the water ten degrees warmer than normal. The water source is a 150 year old spring fed well. During very dry periods I request your cooperation to limit water use.

NEW flower and vegetable gardens, all organic. Receive or pick some of your favorites.

No harmful chemicals anywhere. I recently installed two bat homes and several bird baths, all designed to keep insects away.

The sole owner sometimes frequents an annex, but never to disturb.

When leaving this paradise, you're only 3 miles to Kennebunkport, 10 to Ogunquit and 30 to L.L.Bean.

The nearest paved road, Route 9, is so far away little traffic can be heard; you only hear the crashing of surf and birds flying overhead. Maybe you’ll spot the moose in the marsh. Nature, the ocean, a pool, wildlife, wild flowers, all these pleasures of summer await you at competitive pricing. Perfect for that family gathering. Book now.

Keywords: Almost two miles of fine-white sand on two beautiful private beaches await you. From on a 30 foot hill in your architect designed home enjoy the best New England offers: acres of nature that would captivate Thoreau himself and the Atlantic Ocean. Every one will love the large, in-ground pool, kept warm with a solar cover. The water pump works 24/7 to help maintain cleanliness. Lounge outdoors on three decks: one screened in, one on the East and one on the West. One is always perfect.

Two large bedrooms and a bath stand apart from the others, with their own breakfast nook, sun room and private door to pool patio, making this its own independent area.

Outdoor activities abound: walk alone or with your dog on the beach or on the many trails; bird-watch; take nature photographs; kayak from nearby tidal dock on the Mousam River or the ocean; fish for stripped bass at three locations; cycle private roads or star gaze into dark skies. From the decks you'll see a fantastic view of some ocean, plenty of tidal marsh, an apple orchard, fields and beautiful treescapes. Ideal place to bring the family together for a special occasion.

About Conrad

I grew up in Connecticut and Prince Edward Island and attended university in Fredericton new Brunswick. I also lived in Calgary for six years where my second son was born and where I taught elementary school. After living abroad a few years, I moved to this family home in 1978 and have been enjoying it ever since.

Conrad purchased this house in 1890
Why Conrad chose Kennebunk Beach

Most of the people living here inherited their property from our great-grandfather. Everyone cherishes this land and its natural beauty. It is said these two beaches comprise the longest stretch of undeveloped shoreline on the East Coast. It is so isolated the U.S. Military stationed troops here during W.W.II., scaring my mother once when she came out of the water.

I moved here in 1976 with my two boys after I inherited the property from my mother, Helen Parsons. I wanted my children to enjoy the wonders of the country and the ocean and attend the excellent schools in Kennebunk. The whole area, Kennebunk, Lower Village and Kennebunkport are wonderful places to visit and have excellent activities for children, including the K.B.I.A. at Kennebunk Beach.

What makes this house unique

You can know you frequented the same beach as George W.H.Bush and Cole Porter. George during the last few years and Cole before W.W.I while he and my cousin were roommates at university.

We have a soccer/baseball field! Bring your equipment!

Owner's Response: Bonjour, my French is limited to what I learned in grammar school on P.E.I. and as much as I would like to respond in French, I am afraid I cannot.
Thank you very much for your lovely review. I always am so delighted to hear that my guests enjoy themselves at my home. I was delighted to have you. Your extended family came and went so everyone had some time. It was wonderful your seventeen year old son found such pleasure at the beach as well as your 87 year old mother. I was especially pleased and surprised that one family member returned for just one night!
I look forward to your next visit. Helen

Total Contentment

One of the best, most wonderful, peaceful, delightful rentals ever. The location is secluded but five-ten minutes from Wells, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport (30 minutes from Portland) so there is plenty to see and do and quite a few excellent restaurants (even by New York City standards). The house and grounds were so lovely and the beach so awesome, we spent two weeks mostly just lolling about, although my friends played golf at the numerous golf courses in the area and went kayaking to their hearts' content. My labrador retriever was in dog heaven and spent so much time in the ocean, he actually got "cold tail" and had to take a two day respite from swimming! Did not need the AC at all which was a blessing having been cooped up inside avoiding NYC heat all summer. Helen is a most gracious, unobtrusive landlord. I'd recommend to anyone looking for the perfect place to de-stress and unwind (just don't take my two weeks), although Helen has decorated the house with lots of lovely touches so dogs (and kids) should be well-behaved. For restaurants, try One Dock and On the Marsh (Arrows also if you don't mind complicated, pretentious menus) and Mike's Fish Market for great take out lobster, steamers and cole slaw that you can enjoy on the enclosed back porch while the sun sets! Wish I was still there!

Owner's Response: Great to hear from you, Laura. You and your friends are so interesting and I enjoyed meeting you all and seeing you experience and love the great contrast to big city life. I look forward to your visit next year! Helen

Extremely private, extraordinarily beautiful, and dog friendly - highly recommended

My wife and I and our golden spent a week at Helen’s home – what a gorgeous place. Property is located only a couple of miles from Wells and all the action in Kennebunkport but the house is surrounded by acres & acres of land and the Rachael Carson Wildlife Preserve with absolutely no neighbors. To get there you turn right off of Rt 9 onto a dirt road and meander through the woods for 1-2 mi until you see the house sitting on top of the hill surrounded by pasture with the salt marsh below. The back of the house faces the sun rise where the views from the back porch and pool are the field, marsh, and the ocean in the distance. The front of the house is fields with old apple trees bounded by woods.
There is a constant ocean breeze and at high tide when the marsh is full of sea water the breeze brings refreshingly cool air. The breeze keeps the house cool & we only used the AC on 1 day when it was 98F. When you’re lounging by the pool on the hottest day you get those pleasing puffs of cool ocean air.
There are no people, no cars, no noise, only birds & the sound of the ocean. You're looking over rolling green but only a short stroll to one of the most beautiful private beaches you’ve ever seen. Bluebirds nest in an old bird house 10 yds off the back porch, chickadees live in a birdhouse hanging on the porch, swallows come every day, wrens, a catbird, and many others birds we’d never seen before in NE live there. Saw wild turkeys on 3 of 7 days. A red fox walked by the deck one morning while we were having coffee. Deer can be spotted at the edge of the forest on most days if you’re up early or at dusk.
Amenities: The house has everything including linens, towels, paper products, dish and bath detergents so you don’t need to pack extra stuff. Clean and very comfortable.
Parsons Beach: A short walk down the private dirt rd to Parsons beach. 8 houses in total have access to this beach. During July 4th week we only saw 2 other families all week. The beach is flat, pristine & very expansive. You can walk walk for a very long way – never got to the end.
Fishing: Striped bass ran every day. 1-2 hr prior to low tide. Much success on plugs and salt water wet fly. On one day, in 1/2 hour landed 6+1 keeper.
Dog friendly: Our golden was exhausted every day from running free on the beach. It was awesome to have him with us - no worries - happy dog! Note: Spiral stair keeps him downstairs a plus.
Helen, Thanks for a perfect week, never better!

Relaxation at its best

We stayed at Helen’s home for 7 nights this June. I have to say that I believe the home was nicer than the pictures suggest. As indicated in the description, there are two decks, one in the front and one in the back, both have a gorgeous view, but the one in the back was my favorite. Its right next to a gorgeous screened in porch that has a table with 6 comfortable chairs. When we originally planned our trip, we had many different things planned for many different days. That all went out the window once we got to Helen’s property. With the gorgeous pool and beach a short walk away, the back deck with incredibly comfortable lounge chairs and beautiful view, we found ourselves lounging at her property most days and evenings as there was something for everybody. A few things not included in the property description, but that I found very nice, is that Helen has some puzzles available for the children, some cards and even had a pair of very nice binoculars. We traveled with my dad and two sons (12 and 8). One particular evening we sat outside on the lounge chairs after it was dark, put on some music and got out our telescope and her binoculars and everybody took turn looking at the stars and planets. Such an amazing view compared to PA. We saw satellites and shooting stars, absolutely incredible view and dark skies. Its so quiet there, all you can hear is the ocean in the background.

The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and I found that I had packed so many things I didn’t need, because everything was there. Helen made it clear that she was available to us whenever we needed anything, and was. Without going into detail, out trip dates changed quite a few times. Helen went above and beyond to work with us and our family situation.

The pool has a cover on it and even though we went in June, the water was perfectly warm and probably the cleanest I’ve ever seen. As one reviewer previously indicated, this place is amazing to anybody that stays at it, but being able to bring your dog is what made this vacation so special. Watching our dog run on the beach and jump with waves with our children created a memory that not only will I never forget, but that you’d be hard-pressed to create anywhere else.

If you’re a parent traveling with kids as I was, literally the only thing that caused a very minor inconvenience was that there is only one TV (which is huge and HD) in the living room. Sometimes at night we found it difficult to come u

Owner's Response: Hello Linda,

You and your family were wonderful, appreciative guests and left everything just as when you arrived or better. It's great to have such tenants and I thank you very much for all your comments. I am wondering where I might put a small TV for next year.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Best,
Helen

My friends and I have been coming to Maine for years and are familiar with the downsides - water sometimes too cold for all but the hardiest, blackflies and skeeters aplenty - but vacationing in a place with such natural beauty and serenity more than compensates. Helen's house in Kennebunk enjoys views over a lovely meadow and tidal inlet to the beach and ocean a short walk away. The pool is great for those who want a dip but really can't deal with North Atlantic Ocean temperatures, and is a good size for morning exercise as well as splashing around in the shallow end. We enjoyed fishing and body surfing at the far end of the pristine beach, which is really the surprise of this rental. It's amazing that there's so much private or conservation-protected land available for people who rent this house to wander over! I was astonished at the extent of both the beach and the preserve area - a paradise for birders and beachcombers. The fact that few other people seemed to be there during our stay was an unexpected plus, especially considering it was mid-August. At most beachfront rentals you're cheek-by-jowl with other cottages and seldom have the feeling of enjoying so much space to yourself. That's what made staying here extra special and memorable.
