Our cozy house is located in St. Mary's Glacier addition of Idaho Springs. It is 10,000 feet high just 30 minutes from Denver. We have two bedrooms upstairs, one with a queen size bed and the other with double bunk beds. There is a full bath upstairs as well as a washer and dryer. Downstairs we have the living, dining and kitchen with a nice eat in bar and all the comforts of home. Downstairs also includes a half bath. There are two futons in the living room that fold out to queen size beds. A wood burning stove in the living room can heat the entire house but there are also electric wall heaters in every room.
We love to sit out on the deck in the morning and drink our coffee while we wait for the deer to frolic by on their way to the creek that backs up to the property. Hummingbirds fly around and birds and squirrels are plentiful. 4-wheeling trails are abundant in the St. Mary area and many can be accessed from our house. The Indian Hot Springs are just a short drive down to Idaho Springs which also has rafting and plentiful shopping. Of course if you want to take a short 30 minute drive you can be in Central City and Black Hawk where you can try your luck with Black Jack, Craps or Slots!
We are from Grandview, TX., where it is over 100 degrees sometimes for 2 months in the summer. We have taken our vacations in the Rocky Mountains for many years and have always wanted a place there. We are getting ready to retire and we will split our time between Texas and Colorado. We would love to share our place in the mountains with others when we can't be there.
The Owner purchased this house in 2008
Cool weather, beautiful scenery and lots of 4-wheeling trails where you can go directly from the house without ever loading your 4-wheelers.
Relaxing on the deck with a great view of the mountains and wild life all around you. 4-wheeling trails everywhere around you. Casino's within 30 minutes. Hiking trails abundant.
My wife and I took our family here. We have 3 young kids. The house itself is wonderful. Spacious, a nice kitchen, and the upstairs is really nice. The house was very well stocked with supplies, both in the kitchen and elsewhere. We enjoyed fires in the wood-burning stove, and we really enjoyed the wrap-around deck with gates. There were constantly humming birds at the feeders. The creek was also fun behind the property. Because the area is dense with vegetation and wildlife, we kept kids close because you can't see the creek from the house.
There is plenty to do very nearby. Saint Mary's Glacier is very close by, and definitely worth the hike. We had no problem filling our 7 day vacation and wished we could fit more in. We really enjoyed driving the route that takes you northwest to Rocky Mountain National Park.
We are from the flat midwest, so driving the mountain road you take up to the house took some getting used to. We did deal with some car and altitude sickness, because the house is really at over 10,000 feet. The drive from the highway up the mountain is about 20 minutes. This isn't a complaint, just an fyi to others, especially parents of young kids.
Overall a great experience and highly recommended.
My husband and I stayed here with our two dogs in early July, and we loved it! The house is clean and comfortable, with beautiful views of nature all around. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and just taking it all in. It was also fun to walk down to the stream, where we had a close encounter with a moose! Cell service is dodgy here though it does get better near the St. Mary's glacier trail - a must-see! You can also drive to Idaho Springs which is about 20 minutes down the mountain. We took a day trip to Mt Evans and it was breathtaking! The drive to Golden is pretty amazing too. All in all, this is a wonderfully relaxing place for vacation and a convenient home base for exploring the area. Thanks Joe & Julie!
My wife and I stayed here for a few days and really loved this cozy well-kept home. It is in a great location, close to Idaho Springs and walking distance to St. Mary's Glacier hiking trail (stunning views if you hike this trail). The summer days up here are cool and quiet, and the neighborhood is very secluded. I saw an elk in the street while walking the dog, so if you love nature this is a perfect place to visit.
“Mountain House With a View” is so much more than that! It is a place to truly experience the beauty and serenity of Colorado at its very best. Julie and Joe are excellent hosts and they provided much more than expected to enhance our mountain vacation. Julie was so helpful answering questions before we got there, and the house felt like our own home away from home.
The house is full of extras from scented candles and reading materials to plenty of clean towels, sheets, and extra blankets. It felt like being at home, only way better! I love to cook while on vacation, and the kitchen was perfect – not a thing was missing. Not only did they provide every size skillet, pot, and pizza pan, but they had a full range of condiments and storage items available. They thought of everything, and I only needed to make one trip to the grocery store in Idaho Springs to pick up a weeks worth of food and drinks. There's a large pantry and fridge to hold everything!
We spent several days lounging around the cabin, enjoying spectacular views from the large windows, drinking coffee on the porch and balcony, and hiking to the creek down below. A nice fire in the cast iron stove kept us snuggly warm and toasty. It was Relaxation (and Romantic) Heaven! Then we got busy and began venturing out to explore the surrounding area. There are so many things to do right in the area. We took a dip in the Indian Springs pool, gambled in Central City, and visited a winery in Georgetown. There are also several gold mines in the area for touring, and a short trip to Golden to tour the Coors Brewery, railroad museum, and quaint downtown area, was the perfect day trip. There are so many things to do right in the area that we didn’t even have time to go into Denver! Maybe we will do that next trip, because we will definitely be back to stay at the Mountain House With a View!
Stayed here in mid Oct. Easy to fine. We had a winter white snow at the cabin the whole 3 days there and it was beautiful. Road were still fine driving up & down the mountain. The house had everything you need and so nice, plenty windows to enjoy the beauty, So many things to do in the area, spent one day going to Estes Park, you can gamble at Black Hawk, Mt Evans, Rocky Mountain Park, we even made a trip to Golden to Coors Plant. It was nice going back to cabin at the end of the day with atmosphere of home. I would go back and recomend to family & friends.
This home was perfectly suited for us - quiet and peaceful, fantastic views, and very close to some great hiking. The kitchen and bathrooms had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. While the house does have some neighbors, there are enough trees to make you feel secluded and the little neighborhood was very quiet.
The Glacier trailhead is about a 1/2 mile up the mountain, and there are other good hiking trails along Fall River Road as well. We also enojoyed the Georgetown Loop Railroad which was about 30 minutes away.
The owners were very easy to communicate with and very helpful in answering our questions and have obviously worked hard to make the home a comfortable, welcoming vacation home. We highly recommend staying here!
