We're Scott & Shannon and we both grew up in the wonderful small town of Fries. Although time and circumstance moved us away, we have always made sure to come home as often as possible to our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains.

Shannon Payne purchased this house in 2009

We purchased Misty River Retreat from family in 2009 so that we would have a place of our own to entertain family and friends during our visits home. We have a special connection to this property as we shared many picnics here while we were dating. The house sits right on the New River, however, we named it Misty River Retreat due to the early morning mist that we often watch rising off the river.

The property is truly a relaxing retreat. It's secluded with enough ammenities to keep you occupied (hammocks, a firepit, horse shoes, volley ball, playhouses, the creek, and the river). The head of the New River Trail in downtown Fries is five minutes from our property. As an old railroad line, the terrain of the New River Trail is gently sloped without hills, making it perfect for visitors off all ages to hike, bike, and ride horseback. For adventure seekers, canoes, kayaks, and tubes can be rented from Riverside Outfitters or Blue Cat on the New. Several guests have enjoyed a four hour float from the public boat landing at Riverside on Route 94 back to Misty River Retreat.

We hope that our guests enjoy Misty River Retreat as much as we do and create memories to treasure!

Solace on the River

My wife and I stayed here for the Memorial Day Weekend with the hopes of enjoying the area and recharging our batteries. Mission accomplished! The home is comfortable and well stocked with everything you need for your visit. We found the house and grounds clean and the owners available via phone for area info if needed. This house is well sized for a couple or a family and there is something to do for everyone. Games, books and satellite TV are supplied but we were outside most of the time. Unlike some rentals, the property is private and secluded.
We enjoyed bicycling on the 39 mile New River Trail, and canoeing on the New River but our best moment was probably reading by the river in the hammocks. Fries (say it Freeze) is a town that time has forgotten and for so many reasons it is worth seeing. Fries is full of railroad, manufacturing/industrial and musical history. The town has a delicious Southwestern restaurant and Galax is close by if you want variety.

A Quiet Respite

Imagine looking out over a smooth river with no sounds but birds and insects. You can't hear cars or people...well, okay, a fisherman boats by once a day. My 2 dogs loved the river and exploring the property--it was far away from the road and safe for them, which I appreciated. The hammocks are the best part. Sit back, pick up a magazine, and enjoy the stillness :)

Beautifully Situated Getaway; Wonderful for kids

My husband and our young child stayed here during the Galax Fiddlers Convention in mid-August. We were excited to find such a lovingly put together home-- the kitchen is wonderfully stocked with quality equipment, the gas grill is top-of-the line, and all the furniture is just downright comfortable-- down to the quality mattresses and family-style dining table. Our three year-old loved the play houses (which was also, amazingly, well stocked with play furniture).

We loved the area as well. The house is just a short 1-2 minute drive from the New River Trail, which has wonderful offroad biking and hiking. We fished from the yard, found great quiet jogging roads a block or two away, and were just a short drive from the Galax Fiddlers Convention festivities.

You can't go wrong staying here.

Great retreat by the river

House was exactly as described and pictured. Property was clean and well-prepared. Great location right on the river, and yet very private. Great access to New River Trail State park, river outfitters, Grayson Highlands Park, and Galax. Loved the kitchen - well stocked and easy for a group to work in as it is long with good prep and clean areas. Owners were very responsive to suggestions for river outfitters and other things to do. Even called to check in on us during our stay. Using the outdoor hammocks and fire pit are a must! Love the fog in the mornings (just like the pictures) and must be beautiful in the fall colors. Configuration is good for a couple's get away, a family, or a larger group retreat. We look forward to using it again!

Misty River - Fries, VA

We rented this cabin for the main stay of our wedding party. It was a - LOT of fun!! The main thing we can all agree on is that playing in the creek was our favorite time.

Good Points:
-Good for a big crowd
-Lots of kitchen storage
-Private
-Good garbage disposal (large area outside)
-big bathrooms
-great fire pit and wood
-play area (lots of activities!)
-pet friendly
-nice, big grill
-wonderful grill patio
-ceiling fans
-great hammocks!!! :)

Not so good points:
-multi-level; all bathrooms on main floor
-mostly wooded surrounded by other properties (no real trails)
-only spiral stairs to get to second level (not good for mom!)
-can't actually get into the river (or you might not be able to get out!)-
-mud and gravel driveway...very muddy in rain
-driveway long and very, very bumpy...we sent a 4-wheel drive up for our friends and took them back
-window unit A/C on second level only (2 units, same room)

All in all, it was a wonderful, sweet stay. The bedrooms are nice and comfy and the architecture is interesting. This place has neat nooks and crannies!
It has all the pots and pans you might need, lots of towels and blankets, all the serve ware and silverware, and might even have all the paper: paper towels, toilet paper, foil, wax paper, etc...We even left some coffee and sugar. (As we were just married, we were carrying back A LOT more than we brought, so we left some stuff.)

The owners will answer your inquiry directly and set up your reservation. It was a beautiful place with terrific service!! Virginia is For Lovers!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review and for all of your nice comments about our property's amenities. We've had an unusual amount of heavy rains this year and maintaining our road has kept us busy. The speed bumps in the road are deliberate. They provide water breaks to prevent erosion. Air conditioning units are on both levels of the home and keep it at a comfortable temperature. Our wooded 40 acres provides lots of privacy for our guests. We're pleased that you had such a great time!
