Beware!!!! We rented this home months ago after a very exhaustive search to find just the right property for our family, signed a contract, paid a deposit and were excited to get out of the cold city we live in to be in a picturesque place where we could hike right outside our door and be in beautiful setting with room to breathe. We received a phone call the morning of the day we were to check-in that the rental had been double booked and was no longer available to us, let me repeat, the morning of the day we were to check-in. We had flown all the way from Chicago to spend our Spring Break in Big Sur at this rental with our three young boys. We were forced to wait the greater part of the day at the mercy of the people who had already screwed us over to find out where we would be sleeping that night and also spent most of that day calling properties and hotels ourselves trying to find an alternative plan (but it's not easy to do Spring Break week).
The property manager arranged for us to stay in a cottage in Carmel that is by no means anywhere near comparable to the property would originally had rented. They stuck us in a small house that is right on top of its neighbors with no view or outdoor space (ok it has a small deck) in the town. After seeing the house that night at 7pm we contacted the management company requesting another option and they simply did not respond. I guess they felt that since we were in the cottage they could wipe their hands clean of us.
I would not suggest renting this property and putting yourself at the whim of the owner/property manager and certainly do not agree to sign a contract that states if the property is suddenly unavailable that a comparable property will be provided because that certainly is not the case in our experience. We rent properties all the time to accommodate our family in many places and we have never had anywhere near the difficulties we had here.
My girlfriend and I took a last minute trip here to celebrate Valentine's Day together, and, well, it's was one of the most rememberable vacations of our lives. This place is so special you almost don't want to review it in hopes the next time you decide to escape the city and explore the paradise that is Big Sur, it'll be sitting open and ready for you to stay. However, with an owner nice enough to stop by and leave us a bottle of wine to celebrate with and a property manager in Linda that went above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome and comfortable, think it's only right that we share just how amazing this property is.
The house is located miles off the main road of Big Sur, taking you up a private mountain road, winding itself to the top to reveal a beyond epic panoramic view spanning from the Big Sur lighthouse to the right to Pfeiffer Beach on the left. Any concerns of being pestered by traveling tourists or screaming children are suddenly eliminated as you immediately realize this house is made for tranquility and utter isolation.
Once you arrive at the house, as it sits on a beautiful valley view, you soon realize that the 20 some odd acres that surround the property and the three balconies that overlook the lush forrest are your own personal playground in which you will spend most of your time relaxing and exploring (we actually pulled two lounge chairs together the last night and slept on the balcony, under a full moon and a sky full of stars). The interior of the house is immaculately curated to have all the appeal of modern living, while always retaining the "homey" comfort that you would expect from a remote mountain get away. We even joked that if we were to design a house, it would have all the qualities that this property exudes....warm wooden structures, fire burning stoves, open glass views, and comforting rooms all around. Dishes / utensils are plentiful enough to cook for an entire family every night, and any other amenity you would need is provided.
The easy access to Pfeiffer was amazing, as are some pretty remote and epic views of the arches are you are descending down the back side of the mountain. The trails around the house are nice, but there is better hiking in Big Sur to be had. Only negative was that we couldn't utilize fire pit outside due to the severe drought, but we were more than understanding of that considering the huge burn that had just happened.
Overall, A+ experience. We will be back. Soon!!!
Spent a long weekend with friends and family here and were so happy with our choice. The house is a bit tricky to get to and has no cell phone service but that added to the magic for us! Linda - prop manager was friendly, respectful, and very helpful. Never had the sense that I was dealing with the typical schmucky real estate type, a big plus for me. We had a catered dinner party one of the nights and she was integral in helping the caterer and event rentals get to the house safely. All
communications were responded to promptly and our deposit was refunded in a timely manner.
Highlights of property for us were the private trails for exploring, glass "shower with a view", and huge tastefully decorated living space for relaxing together. I highly recommend this property if you want to be surrounded by natural beauty and truly "get away from it all". Worth every penny.
We stayed at this home and had a fabulous time. The house was not even cold at all!! It was cold and windy outside but that didn't affect us inside. There's plenty of blankets/ linen anyway and the bed upstairs is super comfortable. Everything was very clean, and well maintained. We loved the opened views of the mountains throughout the house, it really puts you at peace with so much natural beauty around you. We enjoyed walking through the trails in the property and hanging out in the deck. The drive up to the house is a bit long and a bit narrow in some parts but unless you just started driving (or have a really big car), it's not a big deal. We will definitely try to come back!
The only way to start this review is WOW!!! NO I REALLY MEAN WOW!!! Pictures do not do it justice! This past weekend we had a small family gathering at the Clear Ridge Redwood Retreat. On the way up to the house we could not believe its location. If you are looking to get away from it all this is definitely the place. The property is breath taking, from its views to the redwood deck with a fire pit down by the river. We really had a memorable visit that we will be talking about for years to come. I would definitely recommend this place for your next family vacation.
My wife and I are in the house now, freezing. Better to use this house in August, if at all. Two fireplaces are not up to the task of heating the whole house. Teeth chatteringly cold here. What a mistake. Highway1 was closed, making the journey from the airport take over four hours! Beware and check highway closures before coming. The owner waited till we paid up to tell us. I feel like a fool. At the end of the drive came the driveway to the house. It's over 1 mile-and-a-half with room for no one to pass. We honked and prayed the whole way. Finally the "view" of the ocean is not what I had hoped or the description might lead you to believe. You are behind two mountains and can just see a bit of the ocean between them. Other than that, it's ok....
