Set in the heart of Ireland, in the historic village of Castletown Geoghegan this beautifully refurbished bungalow will make an excellent base for your exploration of the Irish Midlands. Located midway between Dublin and Galway this country getaway is ideally situated between the towns of Athlone, Mullingar, Tullamore and Longford. Within walking distance, the village has a church, a well stocked grocery shop, post office and three cozy country pubs.
With Lough Ennel less then a five minute drive away you are within easy striking distance of a pitch and putt course, fishing, boating, water sports at the Jonathon Swift Park and Lilliput Adventure Centre. For lovers of golf the area has numerous top quality golf courses including Mullingar Golf Club, New Forest in Tyrrellspass, Moate and Glasson .
The nearby town of Kilbeggan is the home of the oldest Irish whiskey distillery with its own visitors centre & museum. Kilbeggan race meetings are held throughout the summer season.
There are plenty of modern amenities in the major towns in the area, cinemas, swimming pools, leisure centers, bowling and horse riding. For those with an interest in local history, the house is situated across the road from one of Ireland’s finest examples of a Motte and Bailey dating from Norman times. The village is named after the McGeoghegan family, extensive landowners disposed in Cromwellian times. Their coat of arms can be seen on a headstone in the old R.C. graveyard. The Church of Ireland graveyard is the burial place of Arthur Boyd Rochfort recipient of the Victoria Cross, Medal of Honour for Valour during the First World War. His family were the original owners of Middleton Park House which is now an exclusive wedding venue & fine dining restaurant. For those interested in more recent history it was in the local village hall that Joe Dolan performed at his first dance for the local hurling club. Joe went on to worldwide fame & his life-size statue can be seen in Mullingar.
The house consists of four double bedrooms (sleeps 8), three of which are en-suites, main bathroom, kitchen and a separate living/dining room with glazed doors to a private terrace with a seating area and a private enclosed garden. This is strictly a non-smoking house.
