BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN HOME WITH GARDEN NEAR STATEN ISLAND FERRY

Staten Island House Rental Photos and Description

Two- floor apartment, 3 1/2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 9

Our historic hilltop property offers a unique way to see New York, and uniquely affordable for big groups. The row of Victorian villas among thick trees on our street takes you back to a more serene time. Your kids can play on the tree swing in the yard instead of being cramped in a tiny hotel room.

Yet you are just 20 minutes walk from the Staten Island Ferry, the greatest free ride in the world. You get an unmatched, unforgettable view of the skyline and Statue of Liberty as you sail into Manhattan, instead of riding underground on the subway.

The place is spacious and sunlit, with three double bedrooms and a fourth bedroom/sitting room attached to the master bedroom. Also a fully equipped kitchen and living room where the family can gather, washer-dryer, dishwasher. You don't need a car, but if you bring one you can park on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' rules enforced in other boroughs.

Downtown Staten Island is a diverse, lively residential neighborhood rich in historic homes and good, economical eating. Your hosts live a few minutes away with their own family. Helen is a licensed New York City tour guide, her husband a patriotic native New Yorker. They will be happy to help you get the most out of your trip

Access to Manhattan: Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries usually run every half hour, every 15 minutes in rush hour, once an hour on weekend nights and after midnight. Like New York itself, the Ferry never sleeps.

The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15-20 minute walk downhill from the house. if you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $7. Parking is also available by the ferry for $7 or $8 a day.

Neighborhood: Downtown Staten Island is our own beloved neighborhood. Your hosts and their family live 10 minutes walk away. It is an area where people of different races and income levels live literally next to each other. A place to experience the 'gorgeous mosaic' of the real New York in a striking geographic setting, on rolling hills coming up from the harbor. Our house is in a row of eight lovingly preserved Victorians, a very rare if not unique phenomenon within New York City.

If you get worn out by Manhattan, Staten Island itself offers worthwhile sights: Snug Harbor cultural center, the Alice Austen Museum, Fort Wadsworth. We can help you explore the 'forgotten borough.'

Cheap Eats: One of the benefits of diversity is diversity of food choices. Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island!

Steps: Elevation is one of the great charms of our property. We are located at the top of a steep hill, off a walkway that runs above street level, and a few flights of steps further up from that. You have a feeling of being isolated above the city, and a lot of extra breeze for the summer time. But the place does require basic physical fitness

Parking: Parking a car in New York can add considerable expense and anxiety to your vacation. At our place you can always find parking spots within 50 yards or so of the house, and leave your vehicle there without worrying about moving for street cleaning as in most parts of the city. Parking lots are available at the Ferry for $8 a day, so you can have your car waiting for you after a grueling New York day.

DILAPIDATED BUT CLEAN

  • 2 of 5
taken aback would be a fair statement on arrival...downstairs bedroom certainly did not look like photo on internet, it was dark and dingy with only a bed. Middle floor with kitchen was older looking than seen on internet but clean and beds were clean. Owners added another bed to second bedroom to accommodate an extra person which was very nice of them. Upstairs was pretty horrific, bedrooms consisted of a bed only. Rickety staircase was probably unsafe.
Middle floor was probably the best to stay, quiet neighbourhood, pretty outlook, appliances functioned well, wifi also and again it was clean.
Does need a good review of downstairs bedroom.

JUST WHAT WE NEEDED!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed 3 nights to tour NYC and the owners didn't seem to bat an eye over putting up a family with 8 children. Our kids were thrilled with the swing and treehouse, as well as meeting neighbor kids. The house was roomy enough and we were all comfortable. The neighborhood was quiet and the view from the house beautiful - out over rows of other homes toward the ferry dock and the skyline of the city behind that. Grocery stores are close, there are a lot of restaurants of any kind you could want, both within walking distance. With the free ferry close-by, you are close to Manhattan but with much more reasonably-priced accommodations. The owners were responsive and helpful, the house was clean and kitchen adequately stocked, even having enough dishes for 10 to eat twice before we ran the dishwasher. There was laundry detergent and all appliances worked well. I highly recommend this home if you would like to visit with children, especially if you have a large family. There are a lot of stairs, and parking isn't super-close to the house, so that may be an issue for some, but when you have boundless energy (like our kids did!) it just adds to the adventure and character of the place.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

  • 4 of 5
As we were driving up to the home we were wary of our stay, even considered cutting our losses and going to a hotel. The neighborhood is a bit rough looking and not what we were used to at all.

Upon checking in, we decided to give it a try for a night. We were pleasantly surprised!! The home was older, as previously stated, but definitely had charm. We found that any doubts of the neighborhood were unfounded. It was a very quiet place, we rarely saw anyone out and about. We felt very safe!! We were able to fully relax! Our vehicle was safe, and we always found a parking spot each night.

The kids were disappointed not to have a functional tree house as they were looking forward to checking it out, but they did enjoy the tree swing! They were also happy to find a New York monopoly game downstairs, as it kept them busy during the times we were at the house.

All the amenities we were expecting in a home were provided. The owners were helpful, full of information, and very easy to worm with.

The location was excellent! We enjoyed touring Staten Island and we loved being close to the ferry. We drove to the ferry each day, which ended up being great as it would have been a tiresome walk after a fun-filled day.

We would definitely choose to stay here again to save money and be in a relaxing place. Thank you!!

GOOD STAY FOR A FAMILY IN NEW YORK

  • 3 of 5
the description was accurate regarding to the location. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The house was really old and needs some repairs, but it had also charm. The house was clean and all electrical devices worked very good. The way to the ferry was like the description and every day a taste of the real life of New York. The Neighborhood was diverse, and nothing bad happens. (we had a brand new car, and at the end of the stay all wheels and no scratch :)
assuming a great stay in New York

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. Just wanted to say that since this guest left we have been busy with improvements as our budget allows. We have a new TV (got into the flat-screen age), new dining table (antique like the house), whole new bedroom set for the downstairs bedroom (cozy and romantic). For the spring we aim to refurbish the deck with gas grill and new furniture. So please try us again for an even better vacation.
