The Alexander Currens Farmhouse (c.1799) is located on the southern end of the Gettysburg Battlefield. In July 1863, it sat in the crossfire between the Union and Confederate troops on the Second Day of the Gettysburg campaign.
The winner of the 2009 restoration award by Historic Gettysburg, Adams County, the house sits quietly today, a 5 minute bike ride from Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and the new Visitor's Center. The house is furnished with comfortable antiques. It has three bedrooms, two with queen size beds and the third with a full size bed. The house has a new kitchen, a quiet study and living room. Every room has its own fireplace, and gas-fired stove. (The house also has central air.) There are two full baths, one with a combined shower/tub, and the other with a deep antique soaking tub. The second floor porch, equipped with comfortable chairs, overlooks the National Park. A brick patio, surrounding the old well, provides a lovely outdoor dining space.
Hopefully a Truly Memorable Experience: We hope we have created a lovely environment for those coming to explore Gettysburg. Relying on our own experience in renting private homes, we have purposefully used very nice linens and mattresses. We have also equipped the house with a nice music, and an extensive video library. A gas light greets you on your arrival.
We also provide complete book with suggested day trips, good restaurants, and other things that will make your stay enjoyable. For those who sew (a family passion of ours) we have stocked the house with Ott lights, a nice sewing machine, and a number of other useful items. We also give you directions to some of the great local fabric stores, many of which sell reproduction civil war materials.
We want your stay to be memorable, so if there is anything else you would need, please -- just ask.
Also,if you are looking to explore Central Pennsylvania, we have a number of historic homes in the area and we offer combined stays among them. Please go to www.poohbiscuitfarm.com for more information on our other properties. We offer stays where you move from one house to another, or the other option is to reserve two houses and bounce back and forth. Call us or email us for more information.
Thank you for sharing your "dream house" with us. I am not sure how you ever left it, as after only one week we are having a difficult time leaving it! ;)
We spent the week doing the perfect combination of sight seeing, Eisenhower house, trip to the Civil War Museums in Harrisburg, Lancaster, walks through the cemeteries. MANY walks through the park/battlefield, and relaxing here, walking the grounds, watering the plants and flowers, which was actually enjoyable and drinking coffee and relaxing on the upstairs balcony...resting, resting, resting!!
Ken is a guitar maker and spent many hours out on theatio working on his present project...a rosewood acoustic guitar. What a peaceful place to work!
We appreciate how well stocked the home is with various amenities.
We hope to come back
Beautiful! Even better than the pictures. Michael met us upon our arrive and gave us a tour of the house explaining everything we need to know and told us to not hesitate to call him if we needed anything during our stay. The house is beautifully decorated, extremely clean and comfortable. There were six of us and we all enjoyed the kitchen in the morning setting around the table with the gas insert going it was so cozy. We all decided that if we come back to Gettysburg we would definately like to stay here again. Thank you for allowing us to share your beautiful property.
This was a wonderful house to stay in and we look forward to returning.
The owners and managers were responsive and helpful in all respects in our correspondence and telephone calls.
The house and its furnishings are as good as, or even better than, the images show. The historic house and genuine period furnishings are complemented by modern appliances and services to provide everything that could be asked for.
The house and grounds are immaculate.
The proximity to the road in a rural location provides a feeling of safety. The thick stone walls ensure there is no road noise that disturbs.
The upstairs balcony overlooking mature Catalpa trees and the landscaped fields beyond the property was a fantastic place to eat breakfast. The kitchen area is large and light and a great space in which to prepare meals. The living areas were cosy and inviting.
The property is in the midst of the battle field area providing a sense of history and occasion while being a 5 minute drive to Gettysburg.
Myself and friends had the pleasure of staying at the farmhouse over Remembrance Day Weekend. Being history buffs, the home was absolutely perfect - historical touches with all the modern conveniences. The antiques were beautiful, and the restoration of this historic home was flawless. The home is warm and inviting, and no one wanted to leave!
Our favorite part of the home was the kitchen. We really enjoyed gathering around the kitchen table for a yummy meal (prepared in the well stocked kitchen) or playing cards or games. I also loved lounging in the big bathtub in the first floor bath!
Both Joann and Michael were wonderful to work with. Joann answered all my questions (all five million of them) and was always so sweet! Michael was always available to us in case any unforeseen issues arose. (Michael - I promise I'll bake some more muffins for 2014!)
Thank you so much for making our weekend perfect. See you next year!!
we loved our stay at the property. it was clean, safe, and beautifully decorated with antiques, yet well suited for families as the owner provided gates, high chair, and play pen. a wonderful backyard for kids to run around in or for gatherings. for information purposes only (as this information does not take away from our 5 star review), there is not a dishwasher; the beds are full size and crowded for 2 adults; and the third bedroom is not separated (no doors) from the second bedroom. we loved the property. the owner and staff were very courteous and willing to help. we highly recommend the property and would stay at it again if we pass through Gettysburg.
As soon as I viewed the online listing for the Currens Farmhouse I knew I had found the ideal accommodations for our Gettysburg stay. The farmhouse exudes the perfect balance of historic ambiance melded with modern amenities.
Emails were answered promptly and everything was seamless from booking to departure. We were met by Mike, the assistant property manager, who took us on a tour of the property, explained all the pertinent details, encouraged us to explore the house and graciously answered all our questions.
The house is very much as depicted in the photos and provided plenty of space for our party of four, ages 5 to 75. We prepared all our meals in the well-equipped kitchen, which quickly became our favorite gathering place. We also enjoyed quiet time in the study and relaxing outside on both the patio and second floor porch. Our five year old enjoyed running in the yard reliving the battles that took place here 150 years ago. Walks through the garden area surrounding the house were full of delightful scents and blooms! The three large bedrooms upstairs provided a lovely retreat in the evening.
The location can’t be beat…very quiet (despite the proximity to the road) yet conveniently located to town and all the surrounding sites. We appreciated the battlefield audio tour provided for guest’s use.
We have stayed at many wonderful vacation rentals around the world and easily rank the Currens Farmhouse as one of our top 3 favorites. We will definitely return and would love to stay at the other historic homes offered by the owner.
My friends and I had a fantastic time staying at this historic, renovated house. You have the best of both worlds - charm and updated amenities. Plus it was a convenient location on Emmittsburg Rd about 1 mile from the Battlefield and downtown Gettysburg. Finally, the team who services the location was very friendly and accomodating. Highly recommend this rental.
