Shelter Cove was bypassed by Hwy 1, but not by nature! Nestled in the Lost Coast Wilderness, nature abounds. On a given day you will see deer, foxes at play, Osprey fishing, bald eagles nesting behind Big Black Sands Beach and possibly Roosevelt Elks grazing. Shelter Cove is one of Ca. premiere ocean fishing destinations. Anglers can catch Ling Cod, Rock Cod, Halibut, Albacore and Surf Perch, charter bookings available. Shelter Cove's airstrip is surrounded by a 9-hole golf course. Sinkyone Wilderness State Park is about 6 miles (10 km) south of Shelter Cove on the coast. There are also state parks such as Black Sands Beach, Mal Coombs Park, Seal Rock Picnic Area and Abalone Point. Much of the land around Shelter Cove belongs to the Kings Range National Conservation Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.Other popular activities include whale watching, hiking, diving for abalone, surfing and other outdoor activities.
