My husband & I purchased the home in 2003 when it was a tienda and 6 apartments. It took several years and a lot of patience to get the house where it is today!

serene oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Cynthia's casa is spacious and well-appointed, with lovely outdoor spaces. Her taste is impeccable. The kitchen is huge and laid out such that all 3 of us could work at once. I loved the two bathrooms in a separate building; although completely indoors I liked opening the doors and windows and feeling as if I was showering en pleine! There are so many gathering areas: 3 indoors (not counting the kitchen) and 2 outdoors! This place was a bit too big for our party of 3, but would be perfect for a family gathering or several couples!

The 2nd floor bedrooms were lovely, spacious, and private. They are described as each having their own spiral staircases and this is true - however they do adjoin via wood doors which we kept closed for privacy.

It is possible to open all of the downstairs doors and upstairs windows and enjoy the cooler air in the evenings! NO bugs at this time of the year. You will get some street noise and occasional yapping dogs.

Cynthia's house manager Arturo (filling in for Soledad) was helpful, cheerful, and available. We did not ask for housekeeping services while we were there but did get occasional help from Arturo regarding minor household issues, and he came once to water the extensive gardens.

The location was ideal:

**2 blocks to the Escaleras de Fortin where we accomplished our morning exercise (218 steps, plenty of runners/stair-walkers even early in the morning).

**3 blocks to Santo Domingo and the northern end of M Alcala, the pedestrian walk among charming shops, cafes, and vendors.

**8 blocks to the Zocalo.

Be aware there is currently no wifi at the casa, but wifi access (usually no earlier than 8 am) is available at cafes within 2-3 blocks. While having instant internet access may have been helpful regarding logistics ("who was that driver recommended on trip advisor?", etc) I think I benefited from being unplugged for over a week!

Recommended:

Tiernes Calabasitas at 802 M Alcala for delicious vegetarian food

Boulenc on Porfirio Diaz for the broccoli sandwich and charming young owners in the kitchen!

The Oaxacan Coffee Company (aka La Mano Magica) on M Alcala for coffee, chocolate, wifi, and wonderful art in the back room. (Say Hi to Remedios!)

En Via tour

Thanks Cynthia for helping us have a lovely first visit to Oaxaca!

A wonderful week in Oaxaca

  • 5 of 5

6 of us from all over the U.S. met for an unforgettable week in Oaxaca. I had been to Oaxaca before and wanted to share it with my friends. I found this amazing house online and it became for all of us a perfect island of peace and beauty in this wonderful city. After spending a day exploring the city or the neighboring villages, it was great to come back to this house to rest, relax and enjoy each other's company. The photos don't do justice to the spaciousness and the beauty of this house. It's very well maintained, with many plants and trees in the central courtyard, surrounded by comfortable parlors on the ground floor and spacious bedrooms on the second. The layout gives everyone as much privacy as we could want, with plenty of common space where we could gather and enjoy being together. The kitchen is a gem, very open and inviting, with everything we could want for preparing our own meals. (But almost always we went out to eat, because the food in Oaxaca is amazing!) The location is perfect, right in the heart of the historic district, within walking distance of everything, but very quiet and separate from the hustle and bustle. We reluctantly left at the end of the week, but were already planning our next trip and look forward to staying here again.

We had a ball!

  • 5 of 5

We five Californians were gathering in Oaxaca for New Year's week, for many of us the first time in that part of Mexico. Cynthia's home worked out beautifully for us. Location is the most important factor: the house is convenient to the PanAmerican Highway, and only a few minutes walk to the major shopping street and to the wonderful museum and botanical garden at Santo Domingo—one of our primary destinations. The house is spacious, clean, quiet, and comfortable. The bathrooms are downstairs from the bedrooms, which proved to not be a problem, even for the seniors in the group. The kitchen is fully equipped with appliances and cookware, and a wonderful local market is just a block away. Soledad, the caretaker, provided a cheerful welcome and attended to all our needs. Plenty of excellent restaurants, both traditional and contemporary, were also within a short walk. We could easily have stayed there another week, and all hope to return.

Stylish and comfortable house in the city center

  • 5 of 5

This clean and airy house is located in the center of the city within walking distance of all the major tourists sites. The patio was a great place for breakfasts and group gatherings. It was very easy to communicate with the owner and uncomplicated to arrange to get and deliver the keys with the on-site manager. Visitors with limited mobility might find the staircase a bit of a challenge. I will recommend this house to anyone visiting fascinating Oaxaca!

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 stayed two weeks at Cynthia's house in Oaxaca. The space was perfect to allow us to spend time together, but with enough privacy after a long day hanging out with family. The location is great and everything is within easy walking distance. We would walk to a hotel nearby to have excellent breakfasts with an awesome view of Santo Domingo. The Zocalo is a 15 minute walk and there are numerous restaurants of all quality and price located nearby.

While at the house, you can easily relaxed in or out of the sun and there are several communal areas including an outdoor table. The roof of the outdoor bathrooms/laundry room provided us some great views of the fireworks. There are plenty of bathroom space and with 8 people we did not run out of hot water or suffer long wait times. The kitchen is great for storing all of our food from the nearby market. Overall a great option for your stay in Oaxaca and Cynthia is a great and informative host. Her caretakers, Ana and Alma, were very pleasant and made out trip even that more special.

Our Home in Oaxaca

  • 5 of 5

This is my first time renting a family vacation home without actually being able to check it out in person before hand...worrying a bit whether it was going to be as advertised. Communication with the owner, Cynthia, put me at ease. She was very helpful with all questions and responded quickly. We were greeted at the door by Anna, the house keeper, who pleasantly welcomed us, and, the minute we entered from the street, we knew we had made the right decision.

My family and I were so pleased that we found this fantastic place for our stay in Oaxaca. We were impressed with its cleanliness and beauty, and immediately called it home. There was ample room for the six of us...Personal space for everyone, and nice, comfortable areas for all to gather at once. We loved the rooftop for the city and mountain views. It was a wonderful spot for sky watching, too.

The well equipped kitchen was a pleasure to use. We had everything necessary to make some great meals. The courtyard was perfect for morning coffee and relaxation. Loved the vegetation and sweet aromas from the bougainvillea and azaleas.

This home is central to so much of what we wanted to experience in Mexico. It's close to shopping, all kinds of food shops and restaurants, the Zolaco, Santo Domino with its museum and so much more...all within walking distance. Just touching the surface, the ruins at Mitla and Monte Alban, Tule, the Barro Negro Pottery Market, mescal factories are all very close.

From this home, we had a chance to get a true feeling of Oaxaca and its people...warm, happy people who were eager to share their culture and experiences with us. It's a place that will remain, forever, in our hearts. Thank you Cynthia and Anna for all of your assistance in making our vacation complete.
