Overview

Kailua Kona Condo Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 4 - large 1,161 sf living area + 9'x25' lanai

ALOHA E KOMO MAI! Welcome to Hale Pohaku! Come enjoy our spacious 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo in this private 6-unit oceanfront complex on the sunny Kona coast of Hawaii. We are located just 2 miles south of the little village of Kailua Kona on Ali’i Drive, the main road that runs along the ocean.

Have breakfast on our large 25' lanai while watching the fish dance in the waves. Later watch the turtles in the little bay bobbing for seaweed, while the occasional one crawls up onto the sandy beach to take a snooze in the warm sun for the day.

Spend the day relaxing, snorkeling, doing a little shopping, or touring the island and seeing the many beautiful places like the botanical gardens or the volcano.

Later that evening, you can relax and have a scrumptious dinner at one of the wonderful restaurants in town. But first, you should have a Mai Tai, Piña Colada or glass of wine at home while you sit on the lanai and enjoy those magnificent Kona sunsets that light up the whole sky.

Tropical Hawaiian Design by Vladimir Ossipoff: Hale Pohaku was designed by award winning Hawaii architect Vladimir Ossipoff. Our large (1,161 ft²) unit shares no common walls with other units, allowing flow through ventilation from the floor-to-ceiling louvers in every room. The cool look of porcelain tile floors throughout is complimented by ceiling fans in each room and those cool ocean breezes bringing the fresh air and light outside, inside.

The sliding glass doors and screens in the living room slide back entirely into pocket doors, opening up the living room and kitchen to the lanai and an unimpeded ocean view. The lanai overhangs the pool and you have an unobstructed view of the reef, bay and sandy beach.

The entire unit is tropically furnished to give you a traditional but comfortable Hawaiian experience and put you in the Hawaiian mood. Tropical lamps of rattan and bamboo give a subdued ambiance and Hawaiian artwork graces the walls.

Steps to the Beach: You are only steps to the ocean and the sandy beach just outside the seawall gate. Just to the north is a reef protected lagoon where the endangered green sea turtles have made their home and you can often see them swimming or snoozing on the sand in the warm sun. With its nice sandy beach and easy access, it’s also a great place for kids to play (always with supervision), to sunbathe, to explore for reef creatures, or just to enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean and reef.

The kitchen opens directly onto the lanai and is fully equipped with just about every appliance you might want for mixing a drink or cooking a 4-course meal. Built-in microwave, oven, Jenn-Air grill & cooktop, blender and toaster as well as a full range of cookware, dishware and flatware to meet your every need. And let's not forget the coffee pot and coffee grinder so you can try out those wonderful 100% Kona coffees. We also suggest you taste the great local produce available at the nearby farmers markets.

Fully Equipped: Our home is fully equipped to give you everything you need, including all the linens for the bed, bath and kitchen — even beach towels so you don't have to bother packing your own.

The entire unit is tropically furnished to give you a traditional but comfortable Hawaiian experience and put you in the Hawaiian mood. Tropical lamps of rattan and bamboo give a subdued ambiance and Hawaiian artwork graces the walls.

You may find yourself so enchanted by all that we have to offer at Hale Pohaku, that you may decide to forgo the sightseeing and just spend your days lazing on the lanai watching for turtles, dolphins, whales, or just enjoying the sight and sound of the ocean waves.

During the Kona Ironman in October our location puts you right in the action as the triathletes train on Ali’i Drive. During the race, they run south, then north on Ali’i Drive, both times passing by Hale Pohaku. Just set up your beach chair and cheer them on as they pass on the final leg of the Ironman.

About Sherron & Dennis, Hale Pohaku Vacation Rentals

Since we honeymooned in Hawai'i in 1976, we've spent all our vacations in Kona. We love the island’s beauty and the friendliness of the people. Since we were visiting Kona so often, we decided to buy our own Hawaiian condo. The first time we set foot in Hale Pohaku, we fell in love: one look at that amazing ocean view only feet from the lanai and we were totally hooked! — Aloha e komo mai, Sherron & Dennis, Kailua Kona, Hawai'i

Sherron & Dennis, Hale Pohaku Vacation Rentals purchased this condo in 1986

Why Sherron & Dennis, Hale Pohaku Vacation Rentals chose Kailua Kona

Hale Pohaku has everything — a small private complex, large swimming pool, flow-though natural ventilation, quiet & serene, a huge lanai that stretches the full width of the unit on the ocean side, glass doors that slide into a pocket opening up the indoors to the outdoors and bringing that fantastic view inside, a lovely sandy beach and a nearby Turtle Lagoon with sea turtles, tide pools and lots of sea life. Plus wonderful snorkeling beaches nearby like Kahalu'u Beach (best snorkeling & great for surfing), La'aloa (also known as White Sands, Disappearing Sands & Magic Sands) and Pahoehoe. How could we resist?

What makes this condo unique

We love Hawai'i so much that we have since moved to Kona and live in our own house now, just 1/2 mile mauka (up the hill) from Hale Pohaku. It makes it easy for us to respond to any problems that might come up, such as misplaced keys or appliances that might develop problems. Or even just turning on the lights for guests who might be arriving late at night. Now we enjoy sharing our condo with visitors to the isles so you can also experience the beauty and friendliness of Hawai'i and the pleasures of Hale Pohaku.

We loved the proximity to the ocean

  • 5 of 5

We really liked that the ocean was so close. The water's edge was probably at most 50 feet from the lanai. We really enjoyed relaxing on the lanai. Every meal we had at the condo was on the lanai! The condo does not have air conditioning, so it was great that the balcony doors slid into the walls and there were screens that you could pull out. It made for a very nice breeze all the way through the condo.

Another big plus was the pool. Considering it's only for 6 units, it's sized really big. I don't think a day passed that we didn't lounge in or by the pool. Occasionally we shared it with other occupants, but for the most part it was just us.

The kitchen was well stocked. I don't recall ever feeling like we were lacking something. And we really appreciated having the washer and dryer right in the condo.

Sherron and Dennis were great to work with. Very accommodating and helpful. The check deposit was late due to the post office. Sherron was very nice about it, told me not to worry, and eventually the check showed up, and everything worked out. Towards the end of our stay, I emailed the owners on a couple of minor items that we noticed, and they jumped right on them.

The building is located in a narrow section of land between Alii drive and the ocean, with the master bedroom located at the back of the condo. The traffic on Alii drive never stops, although it does slow down during the night. Since there's no air conditioning, windows are open for air, which means you will hear traffic noise at night.

Ants are always present, but they were never an issue for us. We made sure to seal up all the food, and cleaned up after cooking. We had a number of gecko visitors, which were fun.

Oasis in bad weather

  • 5 of 5

We had the misfortune of being on the Big Island during an abnormal weather pattern, but the condo was an oasis in the storm. Huge lanai, kids sand toys, beach chairs, and some inflatable tubes were there. The turtle beach next door never failed to disappoint. The owners, Dennis and Sherron, were a pleasure to deal with and attentive to any questions we had, more so than any other condo owners that we have dealt with in the past. If they didn't know the answers to our questions, they found out. Great condo reference book on site. The unit is right on the water, so expect some minor issues attendant to the location (everything needs to go in the fridge, otherwise the ants will come out; one time a gecko got in).

We recommend the Sea Horse farm, Snorkeling with Manta Rays on Hawaiian Oceanic, and the Dolphin Experience for kids. As far as food, Da Poke Shack is walking distance, although we preferred Umeke's in town. There is no barbecue at the condo, so plan accordingly.

Our First Time to the Big Island!

  • 5 of 5

We completely enjoyed our time at this unit... every moment! Our most favorite feature was that it is located right on the ocean. Every morning we sat on the lanai drinking coffee and having breakfast, relaxing, and listening to the ocean. We were entertained by watching the dolphins jump and spin.

The unit is very comfortably layed out, and the complex was quiet because there are only 6 units. Although the main road was somewhat busy, we were pleased that the complex is located a couple of miles away from the main tourist area.

The owners were extremely helpful and friendly and gave us lots of tips about the island, things to do, places to visit and eat. The condo is very well kept and was well stocked with things we may have needed.

We are already talking about planning our next trip to Hale Pohaku!

GREAT VIEW

  • 3 of 5

This unit is in a ideal location to town and all amenities. The view from the very large balcony is extraordinary. Many great sunsets and viewed whales almost every day. We saw turtles in the tidal pools as well. The kitchen is large but I have to say we did cook our evening meals there but it is lacking like a broiler pan. We could not get the Gen Air broiler to cook even a hamburger so we had to improvise. Other than that all was ok. No AC was no problem as the breeze was very good. When we got there a lot of the jalousie windows were closed, so I opened them and we went out for a while. Mistake, all the clips that hold the screens tight are broken and the condo was full of flies when I got back. Ugh and no fly swatter. All in all the unit is functional but does need a makeover and refreshing. It is great to have off street parking but beware it is very tight when all six units are occupied. My rental car was sideswiped the first day.

Hawaii gem!

  • 5 of 5

Location was premium. We had 2 couples and the 2 bedroom,2 bath was terrific. The kitchen was fully stocked. We cooked almost every night and cooked on the Jenn-Air for most meals. Most times we were the only people in the pool. We saw turtles each day at the nearby cove and also could see many whales right from the balcony. The sunsets were amazing from he patio. Having beach towels, coolers, and chairs available to take for our beach days was a huge bonus!

The only negative was the furniture in the living room. It is not comfortable at all. This unit does not have AC but it is not an issue. We slept with the windows and slider open which created a beautiful breeze and we were quite comfortable. Side door down to the pool had a large gap at the bottom which let a few salamanders in. The owners did say this was going to be replaced. We just stuffed a towel there at night and it was no longer an issue.
