I am a NYC resident and love to escape upstate to the Hudson Valley. It is a beautiful area, and the perfect distance to make weekend getaways from the city.
Amelia purchased this house in 2006
The Hudson Valley is simply spectacular. Close to NYC, but scenic and rural, the towns in the area all have their own unique charm, which allows an escape from the large, chains stores now ubiquitous in NYC. It is one of my favorite areas to explore and relax. There is always a new experience awaiting.
The house is located about 5 minutes from Lake Taghkanic state park, which has 2 beaches (one with a concession stand) and great hiking trails, one of which circles the lake for about six miles. Boating and kayaking can also be done on the lake.
15 minutes from the house is the city of Hudson, which has dozens of antique shops, bookstores, art galleries, cafes & restaurants, and a couple of movie theatres. Warren street is the highlight.
Also about 15 minutes away is Frederic Church's estate, Olana, which has beautiful views of the Hudson and the Catskills, gardens, and a museum of his home.
Also about 15 minutes away in Ghent, NY, is the Fields Sculpture Park at the OMI International Arts Center with internationally recognized contemporary sculpture thoughtfully curated over 100 acres of farmland.
About 20-25 minutes away are Red Hook and Tivoli, which both have local shops and restaurants, and are close to Bard College, where the Fisher Performing Arts Center is located. 25 minutes away is Rhinebeck (5 minutes past Red Hook on Route 9), which has excellent restaurants, shops, a farmer's market on Saturdays, as well as local artists, and an art house movie theatre.
Directly across the river are Catskill, and the Catskill mountains with incredible hiking trails, and Woodstock.
If you like classical music, Tanglewood, the summer venue for the Boston Symphony Orchestra is about 40 miles away. It is a favorite for the cheap lawn tickets to outdoor concerts on summer nights. Well worth the drive.
I have to second all of that!
It is a truly wonderful house and the views are beyond stunning.
I particularly like the way the mirrorball catches the early afternoon sun.
My family and I stayed at this house for a week during the holidays, and it was perfect! All of the host's instructions (and recommendations!) were excellent and she was a pleasure to work with! The house is spacious and laid out very well for this kind of family get-together, where you can all hang out on the main level, which has a big, well-stocked kitchen, a huge living room with comfortable couches, and, as the name states, beautiful views of the Catskill mountains. The surrounding area is fantastic, woodsy and bucolic, just what we were looking for. There are some great restaurants nearby near the towns of Beacon and Hudson, and we also discovered a great grocery store (Otto's in Germantown). Overall, a great stay!
A group of us (4 couples, 3 children) stayed at this house over a weekend. We had a great time. There is a fantastic view from the leaving room. The house is spacious and is well equipped to cook. There is a large table in the leaving/dining room that fits 8 adults and the children ate at the counter between the kitchen and dining room. We all had our own room and bathroom. The owner was easy to deal with and had great suggestions for visiting the region (including places to eat). We visited Olana state park which we enjoyed very much. Overall a nice week-end with friends in a comfortable house.
We stayed at this amazing house with our two kids, along with two other families with their kids (five kids in all ages 6 months to 5 years old). It was perfect. Lots of space to run around, close to swimming beach and Hudson, amazing deck to sit and watch the stars, great stuff in the kitchen to cook with and a great grill. The house is impeccably maintained and the landlord was very responsive and accommodating. Highly recommend a stay of any length here and can't wait to go back.
We just returned from a fabulous New Year's Eve spent at this lovely cabin near Hudson. The house was just perfect for a short getaway with a few families and kids - the place is well-equipped, beautifully situated and conveniently located near Hudson and Rhineback. The owner was extremely thorough and helpful, and our stay was a memorable one. We'd definitely rent this place again!
We and our friends (total of 4 adults, 4 kids) stayed in this home for a glorious Memorial Day weekend. The views over the treetops and across the mountains are absolutely stunning, and the whole house is incredibly tasteful, airy, and comfortable. The location is terrific, easy proximity to all the wonders of Columbia County (really a lovely part of NYS, if you've never been), and starting and ending each day at the house was such a treat. We enjoyed grilling and eating on the deck, cooking in the well-stocked kitchen, and hanging out in this tree-house-like oasis. Monday came far too quickly, and none of us was ready to leave. The silver lining: we all agreed that of the many homes we've rented in the area this one was the most spectacular, and we'd definitely come back. Also, the owner was very friendly and gracious throughout and made the transaction easy and extremely pleasant. Very highly recommended!!!
When we first pulled onto Sugar Mountain Road after winding our way through the hilly terrain of the Hudson Valley, we were all excited about the house nestled on the ridge. We were first graced with the beautiful view through the large west facing windows. The kitchen handled our party of seven with everyone wanting to cook. The sunsets were amazing to watch from the worn leather couch. Even the little ridge at the back of the house running up the rocky hillside with its variety of mosses and lichens provided a brief jaunt into the woods. The beds were comfy and everyone had a wonderul weekend. We all discussed returning again for the spring.
