My husband John and I just love the sun and long walks on beach so when we started thinking about investing in real estate and where we wanted to retire we couldn't find a better place than Maui. We were married on Maui in 1996 on Big Beach and have returned every year since to visit the island and the beach we were married on. Our whole family loves to snorkle, dive, fish and any other water sport we can find. We hope to someday retire in Maui in our condo on the beach.
Laury Miller purchased this condo in 2009
We chose Maalaea because it is central to the entire South side of the island with Lahaina only 20 minutes away and Kihei and Wailea only 10 minutes away. It is also only about 15 minutes from the airport. We also love to watch the whales when they come to have their young in the winter and Maalaea is the perfect location to view the whales. The beach in front of our unit wraps around toward Kihei where the Turtles go to lay their eggs.
The Lanai is only 40 feet from the start of a 5 mile long beach that goes all the way to Kihei. Hono Kai is one of the few complexes in Maalaea that is directly on the beach. Every room in the Condo has a view of the Beach and the Ocean. The Condo has been completely remodeled and boasts all new appliances etc... There is snorkeling directly in front of the complex with a pool also overlooking the beach. Whales are known to frequent the Maalaea Harbor area during the winter months and have their calves. The beach also leads to the area the Turtles go to lay their eggs and nest so great viewing of the Turtles. Most water activities to Molokini, snorkeling, diving, fishing etc...leave from the Maalaea Marina which is walking distance. Not to mention the close access to shopping and resturants in the Marina Village. Maalaea also is the home to one of the largest Aquariums in Hawaii. The Condo grounds are clean and well kept and offer a BBQ area as well as Pool and lounging areas.
We stayed in this condo complex last year and liked the (relatively) smaller size of Hono Kai--at least it seems small, perhaps because of the quiet setting and lovely foliage on the grounds. After finding this rental online, we thought we'd give it a try after looking through the pictures. Turns out we were more than satisfied: the condo has a modern look and is nicely decorated and apportioned, but the best part about it is the balcony that's practically on the ocean. In reality, the water (and narrow beach) is probably about 30 feet away. I loved the sound of the waves and the views up and down the beach. We saw some whales breaching in the distance and quite a few sea turtle heads bobbing up and down in the nearby water. There's no downside to this unit, but entry is on the second floor of the complex and there is an additional staircase to access the upstairs of the unit. Keep this in mind for individuals who have difficulty with stairs. Also, the unit is in close proximity to the smoking area of the condo complex. We did not find this to be a problem since there were few smokers and the wind often blew the smoke the other direction. People were also being conscientious, but it's something to keep in mind for smoke-sensitive people. Again, not an issue but it's better to know about this beforehand. All in all, it was a great experience. The owners were quick to answer emails and provided contact numbers. I would definitely rent this unit again. It's very nice!
The condo was perfect for our needs--although anyone who wanted real privacy could be disappointed--lots of open spaces, even the bedrooms. The location is spectacular--the beach less used than many nearer Kihei, soft sand, turtles feeding at lava outcroppings, the view all the way to Molokini. The pictures do not lie--you are as close to staying "on the beach" as you can get. At high tide the waves hit a wall next to the property and the crash can reverberate through the building. The condo had everything we needed (even a good blender and margarita glasses!). We saw lots of folks snorkeling right from the beach, though that is always weather dependent. I understand the area is known for being windy. The aquarium and Maalaea harbor are right around the corner, and you're a step closer to Lahaina than in Kihei. I can't imagine a better location to stay if you wanted to see whales during the season. And did we see whales--right from the surfboard table--especially in the early mornings. The highlight was that a female gave birth right in front of the condo on March 4th. Not very many people have seen that. Bring your binoculars if you are coming in Feb. or March. We were so sad to leave. Be aware that you climb stairs to get to the condo, there is another steep set inside for those sleeping upstairs, and you walk a fair stretch along the condo to get to the units right on the beach. We had no issues, but our 81 year old friend had to take the downstairs room. Finally--Laury made this work for us even after we had a family situation that required us to change our reservation. Thanks Laury! Cannot describe how much we enjoyed our stay at your lovely place.
We spent 7 days at this little piece of heaven on earth. The condo is very nice, furniture very comfortable, well supplied with linens, towels, dishes and cooking utensils, very clean. The view from the lanai is outstanding although the surfboard table takes up too much room and makes it very difficult for 4 adults to sit and enjoy the view as space is tight. We had coffee on the lanai every morning and then walked the beautiful beach and picked shells after the tide receded. After the walk on the beach came the soak in the pool followed by laying in the sun to dry off. Every afternoon was pupu and drinks in the bbq area with several others who visit the island every year. We watched the whales and sea turtles from our lanai as well as the beautiful sunset. I would definitely recommend this unit as the view alone is worth it. Thank you for letting us enjoy your condo and hope we can come back again soon.
We sooo appreciate your sharing your beautiful home with us! Dad loved it, his wife loved it, my brother-in-law was sad that he was only able to stay two of the four nights with us, and I personally will probably be bugging you again in the future! -- would love to use your place as a base for a future Maui-scuba-diving adventure! Soooo peaceful, such beautiful views, such a terrific long uncrowded beach, everything on hand one could possibly need, restaurants & shopping nearby, and yayyy -- the beautiful Harbor and Dive Shop right there waiting for us!
Mahalo nui loa!
My family and came for our daughter's tennis tournament. The schedules were hectic but the amenities of the condo made us feel at home! Everything that we needed was readily available! The location was awesome! We definitely plan on coming back for future tournaments!
My family and I had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful condo for two weeks and loved every moment of it. As great as the photos are they still cannot describe the beauty of the condo or its location. The beautiful beach is a barefooted walk outside the condo door and the view from the lanai is like nothing we have ever experienced before. The condo is fully stocked with everything a family needs and the quiet location of Maalaea Bay provided the perfect spot for the family get-away.
This was our first visit to the islands and plan to return next year. This was by far our best vacation experience as a family!
