Mardi Gras to remember!
Myself and four of my friends (2 couples) stayed here for 5 nights over Mardi Gras this year - just one word - amazing, perfect, captures the heart and essence of NOLA....I could go on - OK, it is not possible in one word..!
We rented out both the front and back - one couple stayed in the back which has great facilities and also gives privacy. In the front - the other couple stayed in the double bedroom and I slept in the sofa bed in the lounge which was dead comfy - plenty of room for 5-6 people.
The location couldn't be better especially for Mardi Gras. For the few days leading up to Mardi Gras itself we went to the parades and soaked up the atmosphere. It is right in the centre - we could walk most places - the only time we got a taxi was to go for dinner at the 'Commanders Palace' which I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a place to go for a posh-ish meal - it is down in the Garden District. For the true taste of NOLA would also recommend tasting the Po-Boys at Johnny Po-Boys - so, so tasty! Also, Sunday Brunch is a must and an institution - would recommend Mr B's on Royal Street.
We had actually planned to hit the parades for Mardi Gras itself but ended up spending the whole day on the balcony that overlooks the street - lots of mini parades went past, the music was playing, people were partying, we were dressed in fancy dress throwing beads to the crowds and drinking homemade Hurricanes - was one of the best and most memorable days of my travels EVER!
There is a supermarket just across the street which stocks pretty much everything, the crazy Bourbon street is just a few minutes walk away - and if you fancy somewhere quieter there are plenty of bars and restaurants on Royal Street itself.
We fancied getting away from it all and booked an airboat swamp tour which was great - we didn't see many 'Gators' as it was pretty cold but the swamps are beautiful and definitely something not to miss if you have time!
The accomodation is a 'home from home' - so well equipped and has everything you need. If you are looking for a posh hotel room this is not it - if you are looking to stay in a beautiful French Quarter condo which has the authentic New Orleans feel - this is the place. I had been to New Orleans once before and stayed in a hotel - never again - this will be the first place I will try and book next time I am back. As they say - once you have been to New Orleans you will always be back!! Wendy & Raj - thankyou so much!
