This pre-revolutionary war house was built in 1739. With its 15 plus acres of land, with 2 acres of clear lawn, and hundreds of acres of woods surrounding, it is a private, quiet retreat.
The house is a half mile from a beautiful lake (Lake Garfield), with swimming, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.
The fall season in the Berkshires is particularly spectacular with reds, oranges and yellows coloring the landscape and crisp cool weather.
The house has 3 large working fireplaces, 2 full updated bathrooms with large claw foot tubs. All the bedrooms are air conditioned and all rooms have screened in windows.
There is a large dinning room for meals, two small office/studies and two living room sitting areas. The kitchen has a new stove and microwave and toaster oven.
The solarium off the kitchen is perfect for eating and watching the birds, wild turkeys, deer and trees. Surrounded by sugar maples, birch, pine and beech, the fall leaves are also spectacular. Seating for 6-8 in comfort.
The house is a perfect retreat, near all the activities in the Berkshires. Less then 3 hours from New York and 2 hours from Boston, it is very accessible.
The two French doors open onto the large stone patio overlooking the back yard.
There are walking trails, biking, museums, theater, music and dance within 15 minutes, as well as wonderful restaurants, galleries and antiques.
It is a pre revolutionary war house with the charm of very old new England houses. It was once a garrison house on the Albany Boston Post road. It is a wonderful place to relax, with multiple sitting areas inside and outside.
Abbot Bronstein and Carol Ladewig We have been coming to the Berkshires for over 30 years. My parents bought this house as a retreat from New York on the weekend and summers. It is a serene setting in a small lovely town. Although we now live in the San Francisco Bay Area we return as often as possible to Monterey.
Abbot Bronstein purchased this house in 1969
The Berkshires remains one of the most stimulating, beautiful areas in the east. Near New York and Boston but far enough away as well. Skiing in the winter, fall leaves, lakes and hiking all year round. Home of Boston Symphony in the summer, Shakespeare and Co.,Jacobs Pillow Dance, you are in the midst of cultural events and beautiful rural New England.
This pre revoultionary war house with 3 fireplaces is located in Monterey, a picturesque small New England town near Tanglewood,Jacob's Pillow and repetory theater. Beautiful Lake Garfield, with swimming and beach is less then 1/2 mile away. Many hiking trails. The house has 2 acres cleared and the rest wooded. A new screened in porch will be finished this spring adding another room for reading, eating and relaxing.
Our family of four, including a 20- and 14-year old, had a very nice week in August at this charming house. We enjoyed the convenience of the nearby Lake Garfield/Monterey Town Beach for swimming and kayaking, and hiking at Beartown State Forest. We were able to cook meals there if we did not want to drive to Great Barrington to a restaurant -- the kitchen had all the cookware and dishes we needed. The SoCo Creamery in Great Barrington has excellent ice cream and doubles as a place to sit and use WiFi. The gentleman who is caretaker is very helpful and accommodating, as are the owners. It was too warm to use the fireplaces, but they are large and cozy-looking. The solarium is also a very pretty place to sit for an early breakfast on a summer morning as it overlooks the huge back yard and woods. I would recommend it to families or anyone looking for proximity to outdoor activities and the museums and theaters in the Berkshires area.
My husband and I spent the long Columbus Day weekend at the house, and couldn't have asked for a more spectacular experience. We made breakfast and had coffee on the porch every morning and snuggled up and read by the beautiful fireplace every night. It was warm enough to kayak, so we took on Lake Garfield which is big enough to be fun for exploring but small enough that it's an easy trip the whole way across. The food in Great Barrington was EXCELLENT: we are still talking about the produce from Guido's, a candlelight dinner at Allium, and the dark chocolate ice cream at SoCo Creamery. The owners are LOVELY and accommodating, we slept well, love the art in the house, and would unhesitatingly recommend the property to anyone looking for a rejuvenating Berkshires getaway.
My family spent August in this exceptional home and are have already discussed going back next year. Built in the mid-1700's, the house has been renovated enough to be tremendously comfortable without losing any of its original farmhouse charm--in other words, the fantastic claw-footed tubs have plenty of hot running water! The property is beautiful with a large lawn my kids played on all month, and the house is located close to the charming Monterey library and the town's Lake Garfield beach (white sand, picnic tables and a lifeguard). The owners are tremendously kind and accommodating and the local caretaker addressed all of our questions immediately. We couldn't have asked for a better rental experience and highly recommend the house!
We rented this property in late August last year, and hope to do the same this year. We absolutely loved it! A spacious, airy, clean house with a real sense of history, it really exceeded our expectations. Loved the charm of the old property. The sprawling yard was great for reading or napping in the late afternoon, and a fire in the fireplace in the evening was so cozy in the cool evening air. We rented this place as a family of 3, though there was plenty of room for more. The Garfield Lake beach was a 3 minute drive away and was the perfect spot to cool off and for our young son to play in the sand. Tons of great restaurants and shopping in the surrounding areas (Lenox, Great Barrington).
My husband, daughter and I spent a lovely October weekend on Hunger Road this year. It was so lovely, in fact, that we returned for New Year's Eve. The house is charming, spacious and cozy, with just the right amount of modern amenities, without too many, so you really feel like you are retreating to the woods. On our two visits we were able to take advantage of the nearby Appalachian Trail, the great General Store in Monterey, cross-country skiing in Beartown State Forest, a great day trip to MassMoca, strolls (and great coffeeshops!) in Great Barrington, and to spend lots of wonderful time in front of the fireplace at the house. The property is beautiful, with lots of places for exploring and just taking in the woods. Enjoy!
A beautiful old house -- secluded, private, quiet,
peaceful, with spectacular garden, lawn and
woodlands. It is comfortable, roomy, light and has a
warm and welcoming feeling; it is quite close to the
lake, and there is a beautiful walk starting right out
the front door. Highly recommended.
The property is near Tanglewood (9 miles),Jacob's pillow, Berkshire theater. Williams College and MASSMOCA is one hour away. Close to shopping, antiques, galleries and all the Berkshire's offers while also being quiet and private. Half mile walk to Lake Garfield. The town of Monterey has a wonderful general store, post office and library.
The house is surrounded by a forest of 100 year old sugar maples birch and beech trees which are particularly wonderful during the fall when the leaves are changing
