Oh, Shenandoah… As the traditional folk song depicts, there’s nothing quite like the natural beauty of the rolling Shenandoah River, which winds through the misty Appalachians of West Virginia and Virginia. Not only does this region boast a rich history and incredible natural beauty, it’s also a fantastic destination for exciting year-round outdoor recreation. From hiking and mountain biking to spelunking and whitewater rafting, there’s no reason not to unleash your inner adventurer while vacationing in the Shenandoah Valley!
This stunning 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom house sits directly on the bank of the Shenandoah River and is the perfect setting for a rejuvenating retreat with family or friends. Located on 10 private acres backing up to the George Washington National Forest, you’ll find this property quite secluded and surrounded by gorgeous, lush scenery. The home was just recently completed and features many upscale amenities, including a flat screen TV, library of DVDs, wireless internet access, stereo system, outside fire pit, 2 fireplaces, one of which is in the master bedroom, and a large kitchen, complete with all the necessary modern appliances and a center island, so there’s plenty of room for cooking and entertaining. During your downtime, you and your travel companions will have your choice of spaces to relax, from the comfortable family room with fireplace located next to the kitchen to the small library, which is a great place to curl up with a good book during lazy afternoons. There’s also an additional sitting room for relaxing and playing family games. When you sit on one of the 3 porches, you’ll get to enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains, river, and meadows. One of these porches is located next to the 2 bedrooms and can be used as a sleeping porch if need be. This area has an abundance of wildlife, so don’t be surprised if you see deer, otters, beavers, badgers, bald eagles, geese, ducks, an occasional bear, or other animals wander by outside!
You won’t have to go far to experience great outdoor fun - The kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and fishing right on the banks of the Shenandoah River within the property are awesome, and 4 kayaks are provided for your enjoyment. It’s a fisherman’s paradise right outside the back door on the North Fork of the Shenandoah! Make sure to take a hike through the George Washington National Forest from behind the property all the way to the top for spectacular sights of the Shenandoah Valley. Even though the setting of this home is completely private, it’s only a few minutes away from town and numerous other activities, such as Luray Zoo, Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which are about 35 minutes away, and Shakespeare Theatre in Staunton, which you can reach in 1 hour. Charlottesville, Washington DC, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, Hersey Park, and whitewater rafting in Harpers Ferry are all within driving distance for an easy day trip, as well as historical Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, which can be reached in approximately a 3-hour drive. There are also 2 ski resorts within fairly close proximity - Massnutten is about 55 minutes away and Bryce ski area can be accessed in 35 minutes.

Great home in a completely isolated location so beautifully quiet and the perfect retreat. Immaculate inside, kayaks provided and the river was perfect for cooling off. Highly recommended.
The house was just as described and surpassed our expectations. A perfect location for a relaxing getaway. This property is a beautiful home located in a beautiful place. There is plenty to do within driving distance if you desire to get out. We were not wanting for anything except hangers for the closets to hang our clothes and some mirrors in the bedrooms would have been good... there were 7 women fighting for mirror space (-:
The house is huge, well-stocked, and the surrounding river and mountains couldn't be prettier. It is easily one of the most comfortable homes I've ever stayed in- there's plenty of space for everyone, tons of soft blankets, and plush couches perfect for curling up around the fire (and they provide the firewood!). The kitchen is well-stocked (though it could use a few more cooking utensils - you might want to bring your own whisk, knives, and cutting board if you're preparing a big meal), the pantry is plentiful, and you'd be hard pressed to want to leave to explore the area. With the weather being a bit foul, we hunkered down and spent most of our weekend around the house. Since the low-water bridge doesn't have any barriers and looked prone to icing, we didn't want to risk driving over it in snowy weather. If the weather is going to be amiss, you definitely want a 4x4 wheel drive vehicle for the mud and snow.
The surrounding towns didn't have a whole lot going on in the middle of winter, but we did find a good meal in Woodstock at the Cafe & Shoppes and did some shopping around town. We also checked out Strausburg (wouldn't recommend the Emporium) and Front Royal, and while most things were closed, the towns were quaint and charming. The real star of course was the nature and the house and property provided that in spades. We'd absolutely recommend this to friends!
Beautifully decorated, but comfortable home! We had a perfect weekend, hiking, antiquing, playing games and just enjoying the space. Would definitely go back.
Loved this place. There were nine of us -- five adults and four children (9-15) -- for four nights. Could have been a recipe for disaster but this place was perfect. Lots of space inside -- a real blessing for the two days of rain! Glorious surroundings even in late December. The kitchen/great room was huge. Bedrooms likewise. Well equipped. WiFi and satellite connections. This is an isolated, very quiet location which is also relatively handy to the highway and surrounding communities. It does take about half an hour to get anywhere for supplies but that is not an issue if you prepare. Lots of places to wander in the neighbourhood, but it is in a valley so have to climb some hills to get any distance. WE WILL BE BACK!
This is the perfect getaway for a girls weekend. We had a great time relaxing, cooking in the great kitchen and hiking. The house is really beautiful. We can't wait to come back when its warmer and take advantage of kayaking right from the back yard.
