Perfect Christmas Stay

5 of 5
Submitted: January 18, 2013 Stayed: December 2012
Steeple Cottage was even more beautiful than we had expected. It is ideally located, being only a few minutes walk in to town but set on a small hill with a fantastic view of the mountains and the church steeple. It has been carefully restored and is furnished very tastefully in a charming country way. We loved the huge windows that flooded the cottage with light during the day and gave us the wonderful views, but also how we could light the fire and candles, in the evening, and snuggle down to watch TV or listen to the surround sound music system. With a roaring fire and beautifully dressed Xmas tree (Virginia kindly organised this) it felt absolutely perfect.

Steeple Cottage is very near the ice rink and sledging hill (sledges provided) and ony a few minutes drive to the slopes. You can also enjoy dog sledding, snowmobiling and sleigh rides nearby.

The kitchen is vey well equipped and has everything you need to prepare even a gourmet meal, although there are plenty of great restaurants nearby. There are also a few supermarkets and a couple of great artisan food shops if you want to cook.

Virginia is a wonderful hostess. We rented "The Ginger House" from her 7 years ago and were delighted to see her once again. She is very welcoming and encourages you to relax and enjoy the facilities and is also able to pass on great tips re things to do/see and where to eat. Virgina handled our initial enquiry quickly and efficiently and was a pleasure to deal with throughout. She is very kind and accommodating and will go out of her way to help in any way.

We hope to return again in the future - thank you Virginia for a wonderful stay.

Best Family Vacation Rental Ever!

5 of 5
Submitted: July 14, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We arrived at Steeple Cottage in the late afternoon of a beautiful sunny Saturday. After gazing at this picture-perfect home, nestled in a gorgeous sun-dappled garden with numerous rock gardens, objects d’art and a shed so fabulously aged and covered in moss that it looked like it had been created for a movie set, my husband and I turned to each other and did a mental fist bump.

The cottage had us at the entrance hall; it was beautifully decorated with a rustic console topped with candles (set in hazelnuts no less) and a bird’s nest. The first room we entered was the downstairs bedroom (with en-suite bathroom), which my husband and I immediately claimed because it was so tasteful and serene it just HAD to be the best room in the house.

As we fanned out to explore the remainder of the first floor, our daughters opened every armoire, cupboard and drawer, and kept reporting back about the treasures they were finding; beautiful plates, tablecloths, silverware and candles (everything you would need for a romantic dinner), stacks of CDs (Bob Marley included), numerous bottles of liquor (off limits), every kind of food staple you could want (sugar, olive oil, flour…Turkish Delight candy) and, best of all, the Mad Men Season 1 DVD box set (bonus!).

A quick trip upstairs to inspect the beautiful master suite with balcony overlooking the gently sloping garden made my husband and I rethink our hasty decision to nab the downstairs bedroom, but, since we have two daughters, and a quaint second bedroom adjoined the master, we decided to let the girls take the upper floor, vowing that we would be back for an adults-only trip.

Finally, we headed outside to sit on the beautiful deck with flower-filled planters. Here we met Miss Chloe, the resident house cat (yes Steeple Cottage truly does come equipped with everything). Chloe is a sweet and lovely older cat with the perfect temperament for her job as hostess. She is friendly, but polite, only troubling you for a spot on your lap after she senses that she won’t be imposing.

After we had settled in, Virginia, the very gracious owner of Steeple Cottage stopped by to welcome us! After she invited us to use whatever we found in the house, the girls promptly charged a stash of nail polish they had found upstairs (hope that’s okay Virginia!). The smell of acetone permeated the cottage all week, as every shade had to be tried. In short, we LOVED Steeple Cottage and can’t wait to come back!
Owner's Response: What a wonderful review. It makes me feel so good when my guests respond to my sweet cottage the way I do. It really is a spot with a heart of its own and Chloe, the kitty, loves it too and is delighted when she is allowed to stay and be hostess. I hope you will be back soon.

Needed perfection for engagement weekend: Check.

5 of 5
Submitted: February 16, 2010 Stayed: February 2010
Everything HAD to be perfect, and for once, it was. As is mentioned in other reviews, the photos don't do the place justice. It was so tastefully and well decorated that we were taking design notes for our future home (and we live with a decorator).

Just a 5 minute walk from town, and yet sitting pretty much alone on a hill that overlooks the town, church steeple, and mountains.

We had everything we needed to make gourmet dinners (we made all meals in the kitchen for a 3 day weekend), and the hearth was stocked with well seasoned firewood. Candles everywhere, and our host reminded us twice to take full advantage of everything. She even had sleds for us (town sledding hill just down and across the street), fresh flowers, and snowshoes. Oh, and a ton of mood-setting CDs.

We'll highly recommend this place and the hostess to anyone that will listen, and can't wait for another occasion to go back. It made our weekend even more magical.

Beyond Fabulous!

Submitted: January 20, 2010 Stayed: January 2010
This was, hands-down, one of the nicest rental properties we've had the pleasure of staying in. It's been thoughfully and lovingly restored with impeccable taste and attention to detail, and was the perfect beautiful, comfortable getaway spot with plenty of cozy nooks for relaxing in for our group of 4. The photos honestly do not even do it justice. The location is great - right in town with walking distance to restaurants and shops (Blue Moon Cafe = AMAZING!), but still feels private. For skiiers - the mountain is a short (10 minute) drive. Virginia, the owner, is absolutely charming and a true pleasure to deal with - we will definitley return, and would recommend this property enthusiastically!

A Magical Christmas Cottage

5 of 5
Submitted: January 7, 2010 Stayed: January 2010
This property was everything and more than listed. Each room seemed fit to be within the pages of Better Homes & Garden and the owner had it beautifully and invitingly decorated. We were there over the Christmas break and the spirit of the season was captured by the decorated tree and lovely adorned mantel. There was a huge bucket of wood for the fireplace and a sensational sound system throughout the house complete with CD/DVD and a large inventory of CDs to set the mood. The layout of this house is so unique, the kitchen is modern and perfectly functional in design and the large windows fill the house with light while the furnishings truly make you feel warmly at home.
With spine issues, mattress comfort is always a concern for me - I had the best sleep in weeks. I had forgotten to bring my down pillow from home but to my relief, the pillows on the beds were just right! The master suite is large and its bathroom luxurious. There is even a little nook of an office with wireless service if you really must check your email.

The location is ideal - a sense of privacy yet a very short walk into the center of Stowe with its charming shops and restaurants. With freshly fallen snow and the twinkling lights of the shops, homes and the Church in the center of town, it felt like we had walked into the New England village I set up on my own Christmas mantel - making it all magical. The ride to Mt. Mansfield is a short trip for skiing but ice skating and cross country skiing is just down the hill.

The owner waited for us to arrive, showed us additional amenities and was assessible if needed. We were impressed with her warm welcome.

This was the perfect place to welcome in the New Year ( Stowe Inn was lovely for dinner) and the new decade. I wholeheartly recommend this property.
