A private covered and protected deck has a rocking chair for whale watching. Discover the outside shower (there is an ocean view inside shower too) that is on the edge of the cliff above the arch and cove.
The tastefully decorated “Coastal Living” style suite is charming and light. Inside the large windows, which are just fifteen feet from the craggy ocean bluff, is a comfortable king sized bed and a cozy sitting area with a gas fireplace. We have lived in Mendocino for 37 years, so as full-time locals, this gives us experience with the picturesque hikes, tempting restaurants and varied activities. To help you with your holiday at Abalone Arch, ask us questions about the area, what to do, and where to go -- it will be our pleasure to provide you with the local insiders' knowledge.
Wendy purchased this cottage in 1999
Read the reviews. Our home is all about the ocean. Ocean on three sides. Walks start right out the gate. Privacy and comfort on the edge of the earth.
Privacy, comfort, ocean frontage, dramatic scenery, impeccable cleanliness and with attention to you needs and whims.
Only 2 miles north of the village of Mendocino and 7 miles south of the town of Ft. Bragg!
For thirteen years Mendocino has become one of our favorite destinations. And, after these last two days at your wonderful retreat, it has become even more alluring. This room, with every comfort of home, spectacular views, the song of the sea and yummy baked goods was perfect. Mr. Osprey has made three landings outside our window this morning. He preens for awhile before taking off for another foray – ah, what a life.B & K – Modesto, CA
My partner and I returned to Abalone Arch for our second visit. There were many stops in California. This was the only reservation made early so we would be able to stay at the lovely Abalone Arch. The previous reviews pretty much sum up what your experience will entail. The view of the Pacific Ocean from your room is second to none. You are perched on the cliffs. The property is beautiful and serene. The suite is well appointed. Nothing is left to chance. Wendy and Barry are the perfect hosts. They are available if you need them but your privacy comes first. I did use the outside shower this time. Awesome! Lots of info available in the suite. Wendy and Barry are a wealth of info if you want ideas for exploring the area. We only had one dinner in Mendocino. We watched the sun go down each evening and ate our dinners and drank our Ca. wines. Thanks guys for another great stay.
My husband and I had never enjoyed such a fabulous experience by the beach as we did at Abalone Arch. Words cannot truly describe the incredible ocean view and the sensational feeling of being so close to the water front. This is the place to be for a breathtaking seascape resort. Thank you Wendy and Dave for your hospitality. We loved it!
My wife and I had been searching for a place like this for years while traveling elsewhere, both nationally and internationally. There are many options, but when narrowing our selection to the Mendocino Coast area, this property clearly stood out and at the top of the charts regarding our main goal - a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean! Not only does this very private suite afford one the most spectacular view, Abalone Arch essentially places one nearly on the edge of a very secure coastal rock formation footing, where everything that happens, happens directly in front of where one sits while reading (either inside or outside), or where one showers (again, either inside or outside). The owners are exceptional as well - they simply and cordially greet you, followed by an overview of the suite, as well as an introduction to the tremendous wealth of information assembled for reading and discovery planning for your stay in the area, which includes the various coastal communities, beaches, state parks, restaurants, food and beverage stores and shops, wineries, the coastal botanical garden only a few minutes north, etc....
We were genuinely and most pleasantly surprised to find so many amenities inside and outside - we cannot even think of what else (within reason) one would ever expect beyond all that is readily available. The bed is a very nice king and bedding is top drawer and so comfortable. The bathroom and shower inside are perfect with fine towels, robes, etc.. Oh and the OUTSIDE shower is a must! The view from the bed makes it extremely difficult to move each morning - so beautiful with the waves crashing against the rocks below and the cool air flowing through the windows. My wife is an avid reader and she could have stayed four days in a chair just reading and reading. When we returned home, we missed (and still do) the sounds of the sea!
Having owned a beach front condominium in Destin, Florida for nearly 1 1/2 decades and having also rented it out for large blocks of time each year creates an easy comparison - we had ocean view and sea sounds, BUT even being a much larger and fully equipped unit, nicely furnished, it was not as magnificent as Abalone Arch - clearly a unique find and a destination for as long as we can find the time to revisit. We know of nothing that gives one continuous Ahhhh moments from the time you enter the gate until you depart!
Without hesitation we strongly recommend this incredible retreat!
We stayed at Abalone Arch July 29-August 5, 2014. All the reviews are true – this is an exquisite suite directly on the coast a couple short miles north of the wonderful town of Mendocino. The pictures, regardless how lovely, cannot possible represent how breathtaking this property truly is.
The suite is utterly top-notch with King sized bed, wall to wall carpet, floor to ceiling windows, gas fireplace, kitchenette with designer dishes, modern spacious bathroom with huge shower, also an outdoor (hot) shower, an eating area on patio or deck and small propane grill for your use. The suite is stocked with spa quality bathroom/shower supplies, robes, linens, towels; and the kitchenette is stocked with homemade delicious granola and cookies, and wine to welcome you!
The suite is absolutely private – an attractive wooden gate separates you from the world on one side and the ocean crashes below you on the other side. Wildlife, such as many birds, including darling hummingbirds, seals, and even whales in the right season, are frequently seen from the window, deck, or nearby walk.
There are loads of beautiful activities, beaches, hikes, Redwoods, boating, theater, fine restaurants, impressive galleries (!), wildlife, National Parks, fine local produce markets, and many quaint shops, all within a few miles of the suite!
This suite and location are a treat for all your senses: great air to breath and beauty to behold, great food to consume, and beautiful sounds of the surf and birdcalls, and the suite itself provides comfort and restoration to your body and soul!
Hosts Wendy and Barry have been extremely generous in the quantity and quality of everything they put into this place! They are accommodating, yet not intrusive! They make you feel pampered and comfortable. Get this…now that we are home, we MISS them!!
If you enjoy quality living, with extraordinary natural coast abounding and kindhearted generous hospitality…then this is the place for you!
We hope to return in the future – or to move in permanently if Wendy and Barry will have us!!
Thank you Wendy and Barry for an unbelievably wonderful experience!!

I can't add much to what the previous reviewers have already stated - stunning, private, beautiful, perfect and more. My wife and I felt that we cheated ourselves in only staying for 3 nights. The accommodations and setting are everything as advertised and we felt totally welcome and pampered from the get-go. Wendy and Barry made us feel like returning long-time friends and enabled us to totally chill and relax. When will we go back? Not soon enough!
Wendy and Barry offer an amazing place to relax and experience northern California at its very best. Abalone Arch is very private yet Wendy and Barry make sure that all you need is close at hand. We spent 5 wonderful days at Abalone Arch and hope to return again soon. If you love waves crashing outside your room, gorgeous scenery and a culturally interesting town just a few miles down the road, this place is for you!
Property is two miles North of Mendocino one of the most beautiful historic towns in America. Located between two State Parks, lots of hiking, whale watching, redwoods, and picnic spots. Mendocino has wonderful restaurants, theater, galleries and walking. Wine tasting in Anderson Valley.
