|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
This is a private, very relaxing oceanfront property close to the quaint town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Very old Hawaiian feeling - not touristy with the traffic and crowds of the Kona side. Our weather here south of the town of Hilo is typically half the amount of rain than Hilo and most of it is at night. Our days are usually clear, bright blue skies and the nice trade winds coming off the ocean.
The bungalows are decorated for the tropical feel with ocean views from all rooms and jungle adjacent. Lots of coconut palms, gardenia, red ginger, and other tropical plants around the home and a rolling lawn area down to the cliffs where you can watch the surf, sea turtles or whales depending on the time of year. There's even a BBQ and picnic table down at the waters edge for some great meals.
The home is completely self contained with everything you need for a great vacation. All linens are provided, utensils, books, games, etc. so you don't have to bring the extras. The main house consists of 1 bedroom, 1 bath with living area, dining area, complete kitchen and laundry facilities in the bath. Perfect for 1 couple with 1 or 2 children. The dettached 2nd bedoom has a queen bed with sitting area and newly remodeled bathroom. You have the choice of one bedroom only or 2 bedrooms, priced accordingly but we do not rent out the 2nd bedroom separately for our guests privacy.
This is a very quiet rural area with other rental properties and retirees who love the islands and outdoor activities. The home is private but not secluded.

Jeff and Shelley moved from the Silicon Valley area to the Big Island in 2003 to get away from the hectic lifestyle most of us are used to and now enjoy what the island has to offer - easy living, great weather and many beautiful sights the Big Island has to offer.
The Owner purchased this house in 2001
We live just down the street from the property about 4 homes away so we love to share our piece of paradise.
We have many return customers over the several years that this home has been a rental. Everyone enjoys that everything is there for them, it's close to sights, shopping and restaurants and that we're close by for any questions, directions, concerns that our guests may have.
We enjoyed calling My Hawaii Dream “home” for a week during our recent visit to the Big Island.
Shelley and Jeff were both a pleasure to work with and promptly answered questions prior to arrival and quickly corrected an issue with wifi service once we were at the house. We appreciated the fresh flowers upon arrival.
We found My Hawaii Dream comfortable and clean. A work-related conflict didn't allow my boyfriend to join me on my trip – instead I had my brother’s company. And while we found the living conditions suitable for our stay, in hindsight, rental of the additional space (as offered by Shelley) would have provided increased privacy and more comfortable sleeping arrangements for the second person.
The house was well equipped with all necessary cooking utensils, easily allowing us to prepare meals. We did not make use of the outdoor grill but enjoyed a soak in the hot tub after some days of exploration.
The sound of the coqui frogs at night was beautiful. Combined with the sound of the pounding surf, I quickly missed these natural “white noises” lulling me to sleep once we moved to the other side of the island.
The location of Shelley and Jeff’s beachfront house was ideal for exploring many east-side island locations. We spent a couple of days hiking in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (the Kilaua Iki Trail was particularly fun). We explored the varied Hilo attractions (shopping, Farmers Market, Coconut Island and Banyan Drive, Liliuokalani Gardens and Rainbow Falls) and discovered a disc golf course at Naniloa Volcanoes Golf Club (make sure to pick up a map upon paying to play). We had the good fortune of visiting the summit of Mauna Kea with Native Guide Hawaii owner Warren Costa. We ventured north, taking in visits of Akaka Falls, the charming towns of Honomu and Honokaa and Waipio Valley Lookout. While snorkeling options are harder to come by on the east side of the island we made multiple visits to Richardson Ocean Park and the Kapoho Tide Pools. Via Highways 137 and 130 we enjoyed a loop drive through the beautiful Puna district and walk out to Kaimu Beach Park.
The Big Island is a special place. There is a great deal to explore and the beauty is vast and varied. Our time at My Hawaii Dream allowed us to settle in and make the most of our visit on the island, while giving us opportunity to create cherished memories.
My husband and I booked this rental for one week between weeks in Kona and then the Kohala Coast. The plan was to be on the Hilo side of the island, between Hilo and the Volcano National Park, with scheduled visits to botanical gardens, the falls, the Farmers Market, Lava Tubes, and the Astronomy Center. Well....once we arrived at Shelley and Jeff's place - we did not leave the property for three days. We quickly realized - Why would we???
This property is cozy on the inside and spacious on the outside; it fills you with tropical sights and sounds that is exactly pure Hawaii. I think we spent one whole day watching waves from the cliff - so many varied and exciting ones. There are also honu to spot as they come up from feeding off the coral. The wind from the coconut palm trees lulls you while you pretend to read your summer book. The occasional rain - both light and misty, and downright torrential - was a welcome and brief visitor. And the coqui frogs? Well, they are amazingly vivacious, adding the tropical soundtrack for the evening - and, for us, required earplugs and closed windows and doors during sleeping hours for the first few night until we got used to them.
The absolute highlight was when my night-owl, not-morning-person, husband instigated our daily rise at 5:30 am to go out to the cliffs and watch the sun rise over the ocean, at which we were graced with three pods of dolphins swimming by the first morning, July 4th.
The second bedroom separate suite was perfect for when my brother-in-law and his girlfriend joined us on day five. They felt like they were in their own romantic getaway, but with us, too.
Shelley's handling of all the rental information and payment process was great, and I really enjoyed our conversation when she called on our first morning to check in with us to see if everything was all right.
We are definitely returning and making those cliffs on the backyard ours again to watch sunrises, dolphins, honu, and the thousands of waves.
We arrived late at night not knowing what to expect. The creatures of the area were making all kinds of noise and it was warm. Being my first time to this area and growing up in Houston Texas I was having fears about mosquitos and humidity which would never let me sleep. What a wonderful suprise we had. No bugs and a cool breeze coming off the shore make it great sleeping weather and even the temporary rain storm never stayed long. The house is fully stocked of anything we might need, it was clean and well maintained. The view just feet away from the back door was just amazing and just a special place that we hope we can come back to again. Could not ask for a better place!!! This place was better than is described! Thanks again...
We stayed for a full week (4/18-4/25/12) and couldn't have been happier! The photos online cannot come close to the spectacular setting of this house - it has to be seen to be understood. The location was off the beaten path - there are no touristy venues close by. But it was very easy to get to Hilo and Pahoa for provisions. In fact, Hilo itself seems to be the working person's version of Hawaii - more down to earth and less glitzy than other locations/islands.
This is not to say that there are no fun activities to do here! DO spring for a helicopter ride over Kilauea. DO take a trip to the top of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset. Visit the hot tidal pools at the parks nearby. But best of all, relax in the back yard and listen to the ocean. Oh - the frogs at night are noisy, but quite soothing for background noise for sleeping when joined by the sound of the waves splashing.
We liked the relatively new grocery stores in Pahoa so we tended to go there vs. Hilo. On our last night there, we found a great italian cafe in Hilo - on a somewhat "main" road in town which we had somehow overlooked. It might pay to do some research ahead of time if you want to find specific types of facilities.
Shelley and Jeff couldn't have been nicer to work with, and helpful with any questions we had. Arrangements were extremely easy via email, and instructions for accessing the house were easy as pie.
Can you tell we loved the place?? My husband did not want to leave. Yes - it rained nearly every day. Overnight a gentle rain would fall, and by 10:00 the next morning it would be sunny with bright blue beautiful skies. It rained one day during the middle of the day - a lot of rain. But a quick trip to the store for ice cream and hunkering down to watch some videos back "at home" made that another day in paradise.
Don't think twice about making plans to stay at this gorgeous oceanfront treasure!
If you want to kick back and relax, this is the rental for you! While the area offers a wide variety of activities plus places to see, we spent most of our time at the property enjoying the surroundings.....the grounds are gorgeous, the ocean is just a short walk from the lanai (humpback whales and green sea turtles), and the birds keep us company. The residential neighborhood is quiet.
The house is very clean and quite comfortable. The kitchen is stocked with almost anything you could want to cook your meals at home. We took great advantage of the nearby farmer's markets for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Shelley and Jeff are ideal hosts; they respond quickly to any questions or concerns. We like this rental so much that we've stayed here two years in a row and have already booked for next year.
From the street you would never guess what the backyard beholds on this property..!!!! My thought was golf course manicured, outstanding. Loved our stay here. Plan to come back. The Tennessee Sisters + MOM . Jan, 2011
