Jug Island is located 70 miles SE of Tallahasse, FL on the Gulf Coast. It is 17 miles South of Perry and 17 miles west of Steinhatchee. It has a long and colorful history dating back to Spanish ownership. During prohibition days, it was the site of illegal offloading of Augudent Whiskey from Cuba. The whiskey was bottled in 5 gallon jugs...thus the name Jug Island. Later, it was the site of sponging activities by the Greeks of Tarpon Springs, thus the name 'The Sponge House'. The most unique feature is that The Sponge House is in the midst of a wildlife paradise. This is the old Florida, a pristine wildlife paradise, undisturbed by commercialization.
Birds that frequent the area include the Great Blue Heron, the Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and many more species.
Onsite activities include bicycling, birding, canoeing, cast netting, crabbing, fishing, hiking, hunting, jet skiing, sailing, scalloping, shelling, snorkeling, swimming, wading, relaxing.
