'Last Chance' is a great place for a family with children who want to play at a calm, shady beach and walk to the Rod and Reel pier for a fresh fish sandwich. There is a playground, picnic tables and barbecue grills in the park and plenty of adult playgrounds in the area as well.
Though technically a bay beach, we are just around the bend from the open gulf, so the water is flushed clean daily and the sand is clean and white. You will very likely see dolphins and manatees; in the summer, loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs right in front of the cottage.
The entire front of the house is windows and the living room, kitchen and screened porch are all open through to a beautiful water view. The furniture is vintage beachy. There is a lawn owned by the town which adjoins the property on the north side and is perfect for dogs and children's games. We have a small but growing book collection and various board games. The landscaping is exclusively native coastal plants in the front and tropical fruit trees in the back.
The city of Anna Maria has no fast food restaurants, no traffic lights and no high rises. It’s Old Florida at its best, when things were tranquil and living was easy. Whether your goal is to finish that good book you’ve been reading, stroll some quaint island shops or gather your collection of seashells, it’s easily accomplished here.
Nature lovers will be amazed at the natural habitat of Anna Maria. Whether you’re a bird watcher, shell collector, fishing enthusiast, or master gardener, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. Our sugar sand beaches are strewn with seashells and are well populated by shore birds, sea turtles and dolphins.
Take a minute and picture yourself napping on a beach towel on the warm sand of the bay or Gulf of Mexico, all to the gentle sound of the surf. We look forward to your stay. Please take a look at our numerous '5 star' reviews below, entered by our guests.

The beach house was wonderful. We were in heaven; so was Sundby, our newfie. We so hope we can rent again next year. The whole place was magical and we had lovely time...even with the rain storm when we arrived!
Jean Blackburn is a third generation Floridian who grew up on Anna Maria Island. After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Oregon, sailing for several years throughout the Caribbean and Central America and 'homesteading' in interior Florida with family, she realized that the island was sorely missed. When the cottage overlooking Bayfront Park came on the market, she bought it with a phone call the same day. Jean and her husband, Steven Schaefer, recently retired as head of Manatee Co Public Defender's office, are involved in a number of environmental efforts in the area. She is on a land acquisition council for Sarasota County and a state park board and they both are active in manatee research and protection. Jean is represented by Rhea Chile's (FL's former first lady) gallery, The Studio at Gulf and Pine, just a few blocks from the cottage.
Our cottage is in one of my favorite areas of Anna Maria. It is across a quiet street from a lovely beach, a short walk from three excellent waterfront restaurants, two historic fishing piers and the magnificent Bean Point for long beach walks and views of Egmont Key. From the living and dining room, kitchen and porch there are views of the bay and Sunshine Skyway bridge. Just a few steps out the front door is a wonderful white sand beach, picnic tables and barbecue grills; perfect for family gatherings.
Our cottage is at the end of the island, with no bridge connection to the north. Thus there is very little traffic, mostly bicycles and walkers. It is very quiet, especially during the week. Close by is a wealth of entertainment: the community theater, beachfront restaurants and bars, shopping, yoga and rentals of any watersport equipment or bikes. The island has a free trolley that runs every 20 minutes. The fishing - beach, pier, bay or gulf - is extraordinary.
