Look Before You Leap

The location of the house is as advertised - very convenient to local attractions on Rte. 28. There is a Shop and Stop quite close by, which is very convenient. There is also a CVS very close by, which is also convenient. The Pirate's Cove Amusement Center, which is also close by has plenty of things to do for children and families. One can walk to the beach, although it is a 15 minute walk and may be cumbersome to carry all the needed supplies, especially if one has small children. The cooking supplies were more than adequate, as advertised. There is only seating for four in the kitchen, not six as advertised. If one eats outside, there is seating for six. The layout of the house is fine, and there is plenty of room in the backyard for kids to run around.
The description specifies an allergen-free environment, but we did not find this to be the case. We found the furniture in the living room to have a moldy smell and some of the pillows had black mold on them, so bring your own pillows.
The ad did not mention the condition of the mattresses and we did not ask, so I do recommend looking before you leap, which we will do in the future. My husband has back trouble, and there were no box springs for the mattresses, and the mattresses themselves were quite old. My grown daughters and I were fine with it, but we had to leave before the week was up because my husband could not sleep on any of the mattresses.
The ad specifies that the home is clean - and mostly it was - with the exception of one of the bathrooms, which still had hair in the sink and on the floor from the previous renters. I would recommend that the owner hire an official cleaning service between renters, instead of doing it himself. The home does have a vacuum cleaner and the renters are free to use it.
The ad indicates there are fans, but there is actually only one ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms, so if it is a particularly hot night, you might want to bring your own fans.
My recommendation would be to try to look at any rental before you send the check. Final payment for the rental had to be made before we arrived, so there is little recourse once problems are encountered. This was our first home rental on the Cape, and we have much to learn.
