Overview

Kinderhook Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Mstr. bedrms, 2 bathrms. Sleeps 5. Ideal for one/two couples or a family of 5

If you are looking for a 'party' house, this is not the place for which you are surfing. Rather, one or two mature couples, or a family of four or five who wish to spend some quality time together are the guests who will get the most from this lovely lakeside setting.

WINTER AT THE LAKE

In spite of the cooling temperatures, now is an ideal time for browsing and buying china, antiques and/or clothing at the New England Outlets or the numerous charming villages nearby. The Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame and the State Capitol still are open to visitors and make great day-trip destinations. Returning home to the Lake at the end of the day and curling-up with those you love in front of a welcoming fireplace may be just the kind of R&R you need and deserve. For you cold-weather sports enthusiasts... The chilly temperatures and snowfalls are the backdrop for winter fun and skiing at nearby Hunter Mountain and Jiminey Peak. However, you just might prefer taking long walks along East Shore Drive (perhaps in snow boots!) and then retreating to the cottage’s comfy sofas with a good book and a hot cup of chocolate! Looking out over the freezing Lake you often will see the local residents ice-fishing and be enveloped in the grey-mist of winter days, which bring their own sense of beauty and peace.

a quiet and relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed here in mid-August and absolutely loved it. The house was immaculately clean, the location was quiet and the lake was lovely. The property is close enough to Hudson and Albany for day trips. But if you just want to relax, do a bit of reading and swimming and enjoy the view, this spot is perfect.

Owner's Response: It gives me great pleasure to have guests in my home who enjoy and appreciate it as much as my family and I do.
Regardless of the time of year, there is something special to do or see in this lovely part of New York State and the "Little Cottage" house is the ideal base from which to explore.
As to its relaxing and peaceful atmosphere-that, too, is present twelve months a year.

Just what the doctor ordered.

If you are city people like us and need to unwind and just relax, this is a great place for you. The house is well maintained and nicely decorated. Great view of the lake and the neighbors are quiet. There are no locked cabinets or signs that say "renters keep out". This may be a small thing, but it really makes you feel you're in a home and adds to the relaxed feeling. Betty Jo is a wonderful host. She called us the night we arrived to make sure all was well and told us anything we need was a phone call away. We rented from HomeAway about a half dozen times so far and this was the best experience yet. Thanks Betty Jo. Don't be surprised if you hear from us again.

Enchanting Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My husband and son were looking for a last minute (long weekend) getaway. We found "The Little Cottage" on VRBO and how happy we are that we did. The views of the lake, sunrise and sunset were breathtaking. The interior of the house was newly constructed, immaculate and had every kitchen, bathroom and bedroom item you could need. The owner's Betty Jo and Gene were most accommodating to my last minute needs, and extremely friendly and provided a lot of information about the area attractions, etc. As first time users of VRBO and HomeAway, we were thrilled at our experience and will be visiting the same home again very soon. The memories that were made at the little cottage will last me a lifetime.

Owner's Response: How nice it was to hear from this lovely young family who wanted to take a few days break from their busy professional lives and enjoy some personal time at the Lake. I am delighted that it lived up to their expectations and that their first HomeAway/VRBO websites experience was a good one.

Left two days early

Found the lake to be beautiful and the home adequate. There was nothing lacking. Kitchen fully equipped. Deck is a beautiful place to watch the a beautiful sunset. A surprise birthday celebration resulted in a distressing email from the owner. 5 cars instead of the allotted 2 in the driveway caused a complaint. Total number of visitors for one day exceeded by three. No loud talking. No bad behavior. Just family enjoyment. No additional overnight stays. It was a sad ending to an otherwise perfect day. That and the very long list of rules were very stifling. I will not be returning. For the weekly rental I expect privacy. I also did not expect to be told to launder the sheets upon my exit. As well as scrubbing the grill clean. Which by the way I had to do before I could use it. Seems like the cleaning staff may need some supervision. Instead of the guests being watched and reported.

In the interest of fairness, I would like to share part of an e-mail that I received from guests who stayed at The Little Cottage in August: "... had a fantastic week ~ the weather was great !! Every day we went out here & there. Sunday, went to the Winery, Monday to Martin Van Buren house, then had lunch at Main Street Café in Valatie, Tuesday had my family over for BBQ …, Wednesday visited my sister-in-law in Chatham, then went to Price Chopper, Thursday relaxed most of the day but went to the Columbia Cty. Fair for just a bit, Friday we went to Saratoga town had a fantastic lunch at Wheat~fields, then went to track, had a great time. All in all it was so much fun & at night we relaxed by cooking on the grill outside, sitting outside on the deck enjoying the sunsets & stars & making breakfasts every morning, etc...thank you so very much "

Excellent cottage - we felt right at home

  • 5 of 5
We loved everything about the Little Cottage. Betty Jo, the owner, was very cordial and helpful throughout the reservation and she was very accommodating. The house had everything we needed, including plenty of dishes and all necessary appliances. The house was clean and modern (inside) with very nice furnishings. We had a chance to grill outside a couple of evenings and enjoy the evenings on the deck in front of the lake.
The area was very pleasant and we had plenty to do with our kids during the weekend. We visited a couple of farms and attended their fall festivals.
We will come back next year during the month of October. It is peaceful and relaxing.

Owner's Response: Many years ago when my youngsters and nephew were little (now in their 30's!), my sister and I had so much fun taking them to the Fall/Halloween festivities on neighboring farms. I am so glad that this lovely family was able to experience that same sense of joy with their youngsters.

Special Getaway

  • 5 of 5
The little cottage is a perfect place to getaway and leave all the stresses of "the real world" home. It was cozy, warm, clean and so welcoming as soon as we opened the door. My husband and I loved the natural light and sitting on the deck overlooking the lake. Betty Jo was so lovely and gave us terrific suggestions on some of the local activities and restaurants and was so responsive in her communication with us.

We loved reading all about the history of the house and the family when we arrived. The sunsets are amazing and there's always something happening on the water, but yet its still so serene. Hannaford's is an awesome grocery store where you can pick up all your items for grilling! And one day, I hope to own a stove like yours too!!!

My father was able to join us for a few days and he loved the lake as well... The moments I spent with my father and husband sitting on the deck overlooking the lake will stay with me for a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your home with us and everyone else!!!

Owner's Response: Of all the gracious comments made by our guest, I am most touched by the fact that the precious memory of sharing time at the Little Cottage with her father and husband will be with her for the rest of her life. After seven decades, I too recall with great joy the happy times I had at the Lake with my parents, grandmother, sisters, cousins, friends. Time does not erase the memory of those priceless days that we lovingly shared with each other.

Notes:
The fireplace is a gas one, and turns on with the flip of a switch in the fall and winter months. The ambiance it provides is charming. If you are traveling with the children, it is probably the place where the two of you would enjoy some relaxing quiet time, after the youngsters have gone to bed! (There is a built-in night light in the fireplace, so that even in the warmer months-when lighting the fireplace is not feasible- a cozy and restful atmosphere can be created.)
