Absolutely Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

In a word, beautiful. In more than a word, this property and the woman who manages it are simply wonderful. Very clean and cozy. This was a lovely 3 bedroom (Cape cod style) cabin, right off the highway. From your first drive up, through a tree-covered path, you start your relaxation. The next thing you see is the Mattaponi River, strolling through the trees, the Zoar state forest, a perfect back drop. I rented this property for a birthday weekend. I didn't use any restaurants while I was down there. I made use of the kitchen and the Food Lion (pretty close). The grill worked great for a rack of ribs, and the stove was excellent for eggs and bacon in the morning. I took the canoe out for a little spin in the river. All in all, I had a great time. I will and have recommended this to my friends and family, and I will be back. As for customer service, Larkin was amazing. Answered all of my questions, walked me through the property when I arrived, and kept in touch with me, when ever I needed anything.

Great place to stay, I will be back.

A secluded riverfront dreamhouse

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Aylett River spot for Memorial Day Weekend and loved it. Between fishing, kayaking, canoeing, building firepits, relaxing in the hammock, grilling, and enjoying the view from the porch we could barely do it all in three days. Larkin, the owner, is super friendly and accommodating. Our dog was bummed when she had to get back in the car and go home. We will come back.

Romantic Charmer for couples or families

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent our 15th wedding anniversary in this rustic charmer. It had all you can imagine to enjoy outdoors with all the modern conveniences. Larkin was very friendly and accommodating. We took a 2 hour canoe ride on the Mattapponi River in the canoe provided, had s'mores under the star and enjoyed the satellite TV by the fireplace. The grocery store was close and my wife loved the antiquing in the area. It was a very special place to spend a very special anniversary. We hope to bring the kids with us next time, they will have a blast.

Relaxing on the river!

  • 5 of 5

This is not your "typical" vacation home but I think that is what attracted us. This house is right on the river and the homeowner leaves lots of great toys for you to use (kayaks, canoes, fishing poles, etc.), We were VERY inexperienced and had no problems navigating the river. Lots of cool stuff to check out around the house. LOTS and LOTS of board games - I think we played a new one every night. We had four adults and two kids and had plenty of space. Most of our time was spent outside (we fought over the hammock). The family went to see the Richmond Spiders one afternoon and we spent a day at Kings Dominion so even though it seems like you are very secluded there are still fun things to do nearby. Larkin the homeowner is absolute pleasure to deal with. Extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. She even mailed me back a cup we forgot there -- so kind. The ONLY drawback is the sound of the nearby road but you will get used to it quickly (we pretended it was ocean waves). I know there was a previous reviewer that said it was dirty -- did not find that at all! Hope we can make it back.

Quirky and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

My friend and I spent a week at this location without sighting any unclean areas or bugs in the house. (contrary to prior reviewer.) The house is definitely unusual, but we were comfortable and amused at the uniqueness. We did have an issue with the grill, but Larkin came and provided us with a replacement as soon as we contacted her. We made good use of the kayaks and firepit; they really enhanced our stay. If you are looking for peaceful, remote, and casual...this is a good place for you. If you're looking for fancy amenities, go to a hotel. We would definitely stay here again! Thanks Larkin!!!

If you enjoy boating, fishing, swimming... the Mattaponi River is the place for you. This house sits about 50' from the edge of the river with 2 kayaks and a canoe for your convenience. Beautiful ZOAR STATE FOREST is just across the river so hiking and park activities are easy! There's a public boat ramp about 1000' away (but totally out of eye shot) but kayaks and canoes con launch from the floating dock here. The river is freshwater and tidal. At low tide its 10 or so feet deep near the shore (old channel) .about 4 or 5 in the middle, and even less on the other side. Bottom is mostly sandy! Currents are usually not very strong, and every12 hours stops completely and changes direction. Very user friendly!

. Aylett is close to Richmond (50 min.), DC (90 min) Willamsburg (60 min) with easy access to fast moving roads.

Other Activities: KINGS DOMINION Close!! 30 min -Bush Gardens and OUTLET stores are about40 min away. New badmitten set!
