Wyndenrok Cottage, 1/2 mile north of downtown Northport with 3 screened porches & comfortably rustic, was built in 1913. It is classic 'Up North'! A large open living room centers around a 2 story stone fireplace. Wood floors and comfy furniture with an old piano 'just for fun.' Beveled glass French doors open out onto large front porch with stunning views of the Bay with glider, rocking chairs, and table for meals. Breakfast porch off kitchen has views of the bay and surrounding woods. Two upstairs bedrooms (1 queen, the other 2 twins), a separate sleeping porch (king size bed or 2 twins), and dormer with lakeside balcony (twin bed). With a new queen-size sofa bed in living room, it comfortably sleeps 6-8! One bath tucked under the stairs and cozy rustic kitchen. Property is wooded, private. Large sandy area on beach with fire pit, charcoal grill, and beach chairs/table. NOTE: We are on North Shore Rd. MapQuest is incorrect.
We ARE on the water & private/quiet.
CLASSIC UP NORTH!: WYNDENROK is a 99 year old cottage with 2 story stone fireplace, antique and wicker furniture, chintz curtains, French doors, wood floors, and nice quality quilts/comforters and pillows that invite you to relax in comfort and enjoy the views. We have purposely kept the cottage comfortably rustic without TV, computer, etc. A multitude of board games and books, fireplace to gather on cool nights or fire pit on beach to roast marshmallows are the attractions our guests will enjoy with family or friends. If that describes you, then consider Wyndenrok your vacation paradise!
WATERFRONT: With 166' of waterfront, and 100 feet of property between cottage and water, privacy and views are fantastic! Much of the waterfront is covered in grasses and wildflowers but we truck in sand to create a lovely beach area, complete with beach chairs and a fire pit. Swimming is fine (cold water) but we wear swimming shoes as lake bottom is rocky.
WATER, BOATING, WALKING: KAYAK/CANOE: You can bring your own and carry it to the water and enjoy Grand Traverse Bay up close! There are a couple local spots to canoe/kayak with your own but not a rental livery.
NORTHPORT MARINA: very popular with boaters of all stripes- lots of large sailboats and cruisers. Much of the waterfront in Northport is open to the public, with picnic areas, 2 swimming beaches, and large marina. There is a public launch if you want to bring your own boat. We have one family who have rented every summer for more than 10 years that bring their own power boat, spend the day on the water and then sleep in comfort at our cottage at night.
TALL SHIPS: there are a couple options for an afternoon or evening sail on a tall masted sailing schooner (Traverse City)
FISHING: Deep water fishing boats for fishing in Lake Michigan are for hire nearby (Leland).
WALKING: Guests often enjoy walking on our road along the bay in semi-solitude with beautiful views of the water.
NORTHPORT: Quaint village at the tip of the Leelanau peninsula, population of 600 (triples during summer but there are no hotels or condos). A few shops, antiques, art galleries, places to eat, yet all somewhat low key compared to Suttons Bay or Leland (the closest towns, about 12 miles away).
NATURE LOVERS: Northport has a large sandy public beach with picnic tables and playground equipment. Leelanau State Park offers several hiking trails and is spread out between two locations along Lake Michigan. After crossing some dunes you come to a MILE LONG BEACH. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is open to the public during daytime hours and is beautifully restored with period furnishings.
SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: about 35 miles south.
BIKING: Some of the most beautiful bicycling roads ever are in Leelanau County. There is also a fantastic 13 mile rails-to-trails path nearby.
CASINO: The Leelanau Sands Casino, 8 miles away, has gambling, fine dining, and entertainment.
