Turtleback Lodge is a unique cabin in a unique location. Being surrounded on three sides by water gives guests a view of the lake from every single window in the cabin!. Enjoy relaxing, playing in the water, taking a lazy paddleboat ride into the quiet cove or taking your boat out for any water sport you like. There is nothing to match the beauty of the sunsets over the lake- who says Key West has a corner on sunsets?? Having coffee in the early morning in the gazebo while the mist on the lake burns away, fish jump, birds of all sorts take flight.... heaven!! A fire pit placed out by the lake allows relaxing with the ones you love while grilling hot dogs or roasting marshmallows while an awesome show of stars twinkle overhead. Stay on site and enjoy endless fishing, swimming, paddleboating, sunbathing, grilling and relaxing. Ending the day soaking in the hot tub on the front porch is sure to be the doctor's order for a good night's sleep!

Or venture out and enjoy year round golf with several courses nearby, local dining and other activities such as tennis, bowling, mini-golf, paintball, and biking. Visit some of the many local cultural activities such as the Greenwood Arts Council, Community Theatre and Museum. Be sure to check for seasonal festivals and celebrations. Drive a little farther... an hour to an hour and a half or so...and find mountain trails, waterfalls, parks, concerts, and dining and shopping to suit almost any taste and desire.

Bring along your furry friend and let him ride in the paddle boat, swim in the cool waters or curl up under the swing on the porch. Your best friend is sure to be fascinated by the jumping fish, the cranes as they lazily take flight or just new places to sniff and run. Let tension go as you relax on the swinging bed in the cozy bedroom corner of the porch as the ceiling fan lulls you into dream land, relaxing to the sounds of frogs and crickets and the water lapping at the shore. As one guest commented about the swinging bed: 'it's like being on a cruise because all you can see is water'!

Sleeping quarters include two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a queen bed, twin daybeds in the den and the twin size swinging bed in the bedroom corner of the enclosed porch. Each bed is made up, fresh and inviting with linens and towels supplied for your needs. Although there is sleeping space for 7 people, we definitely do NOT recommend trying to use the swinging bed on the porch as your place to sleep during the heat of the summer.

Our full kitchen has all the extras we could think of, including a blender, coffee maker, crock pot, deep fryer and all sorts of drink glasses! For cool mornings you can knock off the chill by firing up the gas log heater in the kitchen.

If you haven't been to TBL in a while there are a few additions.... a diving board on the floating dock has been a favorite. A gas fish fryer and a picnic table in the BBQ house have made eating out there more fun and we are just finishing up in the kitchen (March 2013) with some needed updates: new cabinets, counter tops, dishwasher, stove and sink. We maintain the character of the cabin with every change we make but do all we can to have modern convinces and a few 'extras' when possible.

Because Turtleback Lodge is a hand built log cabin, built in the late 40's and early 50's with hand hewn logs, we are very aware of the need for some special precautions and care. We are firm in the **** NO SMOKING **** provision and ask that you understand that this simply is not the rental for you if you enjoy smoking. Please understand that smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property. You are responsible for any friends you invite to visit when you are a guest at TBL. We want to be up front about this so there are no 'surprises' for people when they find the information in the contract.

The fact that we are on a peninsula means we have over 1000 feet of shore line for fishing and exploring. We also have a boat ramp on site.

We supply information at the cabin so you have directions and driving distances for stores, restaurants, and also a place to rent a boat or jet skis close to the cabin, where to buy bait, a fishing license or go see a movie. We do all we can to make sure our guests have their needs met and beyond. The feedback we get helps us plan for improvements and new ways to make Turtleback Lodge a place our guests want to return to over and over again.

We have by no means a large cabin- our bedrooms and the bathroom are small- but we are happy to provide a unique, special place, unlike any other on the lake. A recent entry in our journal in the cabin for guests' comments : 'We rent many places through VRBO and yours is the best!' .If there is any information you need please feel free to email or call during the business hours listed below.

We inherited the cabin from Mart's parents and love every inch of it, making improvements whenever possible so that the cabin offers everything needed to make it the perfect place to relax or play. We live about ten miles from the cabin so we are able to be available to guests if there are any questions or needs. The wonderful comments and feedback from our guests have made us feel that others see all the love put into the cabin through the years. Mart is a full time farmer and Beverlee is a retired RN. Married for 42 years (YIKES! We don't even feel THAT old!!), we have celebrated more family occasions and events at the cabin than we can count, so it holds a huge place in our hearts.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1985

Turtleback Lodge was built on land bought by Mart's father when the lake was being built! If we were in the market for a get-away on Lake Greenwood we feel there could not possibly be a more perfect location. Having water on three sides gives us privacy, security, access to the 'big water' and the quiet and SO much more. It is a unigue peninsula and a unique cabin and we feel blessed to own it. When you are sitting in the hot tub or lying on the swinging bed, the views of water all around give the feel of being in the middle of the ocean! We have the ability to close off the outside world and completely relax. Being back in civilization with a short drive just adds to the overall convenience, whether there for a weekend or two weeks!

Turtleback Trail is a private drive and, at the very end of the seven- tenths of a mile road, Turtleback Lodge. With well over 1000 feet of shore line, the cabin sits out on the peninsula facing the ‘big water’ and having the quiet mouth of the cove at the back. A stay at the cabin can be as active or as tranquil as desired. With a private boat ramp there is no driving off site to get your boat into the water. Year round you are able to dock under the covered floating boat dock, built with a wide side to allow sun bathing and relaxing, with a ladder at the end for swimmers. The cabin is child friendly as well as having extremely easy access for our guests who may find it difficult to climb stairs. There are no steps into the cabin and the walk from the cabin to the dock with the gazebo is short and only a slight incline. We have had friends who have physical limitations find the in and out stairs at the main swimming area also easy to use. For years Christmas trees have gone to a new home on the bottom of Lake Greenwood, around our floating dock. These weighted trees have formed great places for fish to hang out just waiting for you to wet a line. There is nothing better than a mess of fish cooked fresh at the lake- yum! The cabin is close enough to civilization to run out for pizza or to the store for supplies. But close enough to nature that you must drive slowly down the drive at night because deer are out in numbers, along with red foxes and rabbits and all sorts of four legged creatures.

What an amazing property!!!!! We spent the weekend here with our two boys to get away from life and to fish. Which is exactly what we were able to do. We fished from the dock, the beach and the paddle boat. So may options and I could see this being a perfect place to get away in the summer as well!! There is a diving board, boat dock (for those with your own boat) and tons of areas to walk down to get in for a dip (if you didn't want to dive in off the dock). The property is completely surrounded by water. The history is shown throughout the property which we LOVED!!! It was beautiful in the morning, afternoon and at night. It was the perfect home away from home. Thank you Mart and Beverlee for sharing your cabin with our family....we couldn't have asked for a better place to be!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review! Hearing that you had a great weekend when the weather was less than perfect made us feel good about the property and the things to occupy little boys. :) Your comment to us that you would like to return is the best compliment we can get. We hope you do make Turtleback Lodge a place you make great memories with your family for years to come. We have been blessed with such great guests and we add you to that list. Thank you so much again for taking good care of our little cabin and telling others about your experience! Guests often tell me how important the reviews were in their decision to stay with us at TBL!

Well, we just enjoyed our third visit to TBL. We spent a week and had a great time.
We fished, cruised the lake, went swimming with our two Labs (Harley and Katy) and
just relaxed. Couldn't have asked for a better vacation. Bev and Mart are great people
and I hope they continue to keep TBL just the way it is. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Owner's Response: Jerry and Donna, we always love to see your names come up in the email! Knowing how far you drive to get to TBL and how much you love coming back again and again... that means the world to us. Thank you for your comments, for taking time to write a review, for loving our little cabin as much as we do... OK, maybe not quite that much.. we are pretty over the top, but knowing you've retuned for 3 years now is the best review we could get. We've never had a furry guest say one single negative thing about the fish jumping in the water or the swimming or the running room and it sounds like Katy and Harley were in complete agreement with you, that it was a great place to hang out and make memories that they can take home and dream about. Don't you love it when the doggies are dreaming and they make that little running, barking and wagging combo- I know some of those dreams will be lake dreams from South Carolina! Thanks again for everything! We look forward to hearing from you for many years to come!

My wife and I along with our four legged daughter spent 4 nights at the Turtleback Lodge, Labor Day weekend 2013. The first thing I want to mention is that the communication between the owners and ourselves was above and beyond and that their description of the property tells me that they are humble people. We have spent many vacations wondering if the property we had decided on would be like the description and I can honestly say, this property was more … much, much more. Our initial thoughts when we returned home was that the time spent at the lodge was perfect but I felt that I needed to allow some time to give an unbiased review. Well, it WAS perfect. Ok, I think my wife mentioned something about a sharp knife and I mentioned the morning sunlight (maybe a curtain to compliment the blinds in the bedrooms?) keeping me from sleeping in … lol. The cabin: every detail was amazing. Note: loved the light/fan switches ;) The accommodations were spot-on … very clean. Everything you could possibly need in the newly remodeled kitchen, plus. Living room was very comfortable with real fireplace, games, books, TV and a good selection of movies. Screened porch was a perfect place for morning coffee and an afternoon nap on the swinging bed. We didn't use the hot tub but it looked to be well maintained. Thinking back, I cannot think of a negative thing with the cabin … as I said, perfect. We were even able to use our cell phone as a wifi hotspot enabling us to use our laptop. The grounds: super clean, the grass was like carpet, multiple large trees allowing you sun or shade at any time during the day. I personally liked the diving board … deep water and very refreshing. The property has an amazing amount of waterfront footage allowing for some great fishing from the bank. Did I mention the sunsets? … amazing!! At night we would move the portable fire pit out to the furthest point to enjoy them along with the evening air.The entire weekend was very relaxing and quiet. We thought that once Saturday and Sunday came, the noise level would heighten but the way the property is situated, most of the boat traffic was across the lake. There are a few houses nearby but again, the way the property is situated, it seems secluded. Beverlee and Mart, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the wonderful accommodations. You truly have a beautiful place and if you ever have trouble coming up with and heir, keep us in mind ;) … in the meantime, we will be back ... the Graham's

Owner's Response: As I looked over the site I realized that my response was never posted! The review was so wonderful because you guys were first time guests and because I could tell you were nervous about whether you would be happy with the property. I am always anxious, every time we have new guests at the cabin because I know how important vacation time is and how we all have such limited time to relax these days. We were thrilled with your review and to know you were happy with the weekend. I don't know why my response didn't post but I recall writing that the gift you left was so unexpected and would be enjoyed by other guests for a long long time... thank you SO much for the 4-man raft with oars!
I hope your plans for the future include TBL. When guests enjoy our little cabin as much as you did we love to have you return again and again. Your suggestions have been much appreciated and we love feedback that helps us improve the stay for you and for others.
Again, I am so sorry that my original response to you failed to go through but the fact that this is so late is no reflection on how much we appreciated your comments. I hope you become seasoned Turtleback Lodge folks!! :)

If you need a peaceful and relaxing get-a-way....THIS IS IT! If there is such a thing as a perfect vacation, this is it! Now, let me tell you why. Our family is not your average family when it comes to a vacation home. First, my husband likes to fish. Second, I just want to relax and read. Third, we have guardianship of my husband's sister and she is physically and mentally handicapped so we need a one level, no steps entry located on a level ground so she can walk around with assistance. And did I mention, also, pet friendly because our basset hound, Sadie, travels everywhere with us. Turtleback Lodge has it all and much much more! And I don't think I mentioned the wonderful owners that will go totally out of their way to make sure all your needs are met. I have never walked into a vacation home and could feel the love of family and could even feel that there has been many many good family memories made there throughout the years. If fishing is what you like, just walk out the door and you are only a few steps from a floating dock. If you brought your boat along, there's a ramp right there, no getting out to search for one. If relaxing is your thing, there is a swinging bed, yes I said a swinging bed on the screened porch...a good book and a glass of cold sweet tea...what more could you ask for. I did not leave the cabin at all once we settled in. If you prefer to go out, there are restaurants and shopping just a few minutes away. As for me, I could not make myself leave this place. We did get take out from a place called The Amish Oven. If it's down home southern cooking you like, this is definitely the place. My husband went to pick it up because I would not leave. Well, I could go on and on but I guess by now, you get it! This is the Perfect Get-A-Way that I would recommend to anybody. One more can swim there too! We are already planning our next trip and for sure, we will be staying longer next time. Thanks so much Mart and Beverlee!

Owner's Response: I can't tell.... did you like Turtleback Lodge? lol! Your enthusiasm has been so appreciated- we work hard to make Turtleback a place where people who choose to give it a try will have a great time and we love the feedback. So far, so good. :)Everyone needs a change of scenery and a place to feel tension melt away and sometimes that can be hard for a lot of reasons- pets, distance, physical challenges... As animal lovers we know how important that can be- to have a place where your pets (aka furry kids) can go along with you and not grieve about being left behind. We were thrilled that everything worked out to meet your needs and we look forward to having you and your family return again and again. Knowing how happy you were, to have found a place where you feel that your family, including Sadie of course, is safe, needs are met and your life was enriched- we could not ask for better feedback and we thank you for taking the time to let others know your experience while at Turtleback Lodge.

Christmas was a "10"
  • 5 of 5
When planning our Christmas vacation to South Carolina this year, we asked each other what would make the trip a perfect "10". Our holiday week at Turtleback was just that and more, a "10+". Thank you for all the beautiful decorations and personal touches. The tree was immediately "Ann-Marie's", with your fantastic bobber lights and fisherman's theme! As we walked in, its glow welcomed us with a cheerful Christmas feeling. Fishing kept everyone happy and we also enjoyed visits with family and friends throughout the week. We have to agree however, that the best times were "coming home" to Turtleback each day and ending each evening with a roaring fire. We're glad to have returned so soon after our summer vacation. Christmas was the most relaxing we've had in countless years thanks to you all. Beverlee and Mart, may the New Year bring you and your family many blessings as you continue to share your little piece of heaven with others.

Owner's Response: Knowing that your Christmas was especially memorable in part because of your stay at Turtleback Lodge makes us so happy. We love Christmas and have had guests for the holidays at the cabin for two years now. It's great having a reason to put up the fishing tree and put out the moose and fishing items that are perfect for the cabin. You guys are so wonderful to us and have added a lot to the cabin with your two stays and we look forward to communicating with you about future stays. We have been blessed with such thoughtful guests and like ya'll, many have come to feel like they have come "home" when they are at TBL. That is a real compliment to the ambiance of the lake, the peninsula and the feeling that is the cabin itself. We have tried to add to that rustic charm with comforts of home and extras beyond the usual. Having great guests, like you guys, who give us suggestions we can work with and make things even better has made it seem less like work and more like a development of relationships with our guests, even if we never actually meet many face to face. Thank you for taking time to give folks who are looking for a certain kind of vacation a review of your stay. We value every review, suggestion and comment. As we tell potential guests, a cabin is not for everyone- we don't have fancy bathrooms or big bedrooms but if you are looking for relaxing time by the water with a hot tub, fire place and BBQ House, we hope you will give us a second look.

We were originally looking to stay on the Gulf of Mexico beach, but had to change our travel plans. We decided to change our vacation search to lakefront, rather than ocean front...and BOY ARE WE GLAD WE DID! My husband's only request for our vacation spot was to be on water somewhere, and we came across the Turtleback Lodge. We quickly changed our plan once I got in contact with Beverlee. We are hoping to make TBL a regular get-away place for our family. The cabin and property are exactly advertised...nothing has been forgotten, everything you'll need is provided! This cabin would be great to visit during any season; there is so much to do but prefect for relaxing, too.

We absolutely loved our stay at the cabin, and we are already planning to come back in the not-too-distant future. We were really looking forward to a few days away with our little son and TBL was EXACTLY what we'd hoped for. We couldn't get enough of the porch and water. Our one year old baby loved crawling around on the grass and around the cabin. There was plenty of room for him to explore, and our dog loved relaxing right by the door on the porch, too. It was perfect! You have all the details accounted for. We loved cooking on the grill, as well as watching both sunrises and sunsets, playing a board game on a lazy afternoon, a short paddle boat ride around the cove, a warm evening fire in the fireplace, a DVD player for an evening movie, etc. We have so many wonderful memories of our days at the cabin. We were able to read at the table under the gazebo which is such a hard thing to come by when we're home. We enjoyed breakfast as the sun came up out on the porch.

We've had nothing but good things to say about our time in South Carolina and people are already loving the pictures we've shared with them! Thank you for everything and, most of all, for sharing your property with all the guests to have the opportunity to stay at TBL. Beverlee was extremely easy to work with! We had trouble finding a place that we could bring our dog--Turtleback Lodge was very pet-friendly! This was our first time ever booking something online without ever being there or without a family or friend recommendation. Now, we are able to recommend your cabing to those we know! Our days at TBL were a huge refreshing blessing to our family!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and personal review of your stay at Turtleback Lodge! We are thrilled that the cabin was exactly what you were looking for. And we are so glad that you want to come back- we hope you do make TBL your go-to place for some time away from home. And last but not least, we appreciate so very much your spreading of the word that TBL is a great place for a short get way or a longer vacation. A personal recommendation from a friend or family member trumps an ad any day. :o) Thank you again for your review and we hope to hear from you again very soon!

Car: necessary

The area is rich with golf- ask for the list and web sites-, shopping, farmer's market for spring and summer produce, Newberry Opera House shows and performers, community theater, regional festivals and activities. A drive of an hour or an hour and a half will get you to mountain trails, waterfalls, large venue shows, shopping of all kinds, restaurants of every sort and much more. As much as there is to do in the area we have had guests tell us that their plans changed after arriving because that they wanted to stay on site, relaxing, refreshing and becoming 'lake people'. What better compliment than having guests tell us that the little cabin at the end of Turtleback Trail was where they wanted to be? Nice!
