GREEN HEAD FORGE-INSPIRING! WALK TO TOWN, FAMILY FRIENDLY!

Deer Isle - Stonington Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-6)

Green Head Forge is on 3.5 beautiful acres on the outskirts of Stonington in a comfortable family neighborhood.

It's nestled in the woods among granite ledges and lichen-covered boulders -- there is even an old quarry on the property! There's lots of privacy and winding paths to explore.

Green Head Cove is at the end of the street, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot than this for launching your kayaks, swimming (brrrr!), or picnicking on the rocks while watching the lobster boats come and go.

Walk a little farther along the cove to Green Head Lobster Company for live lobsters right off the boat! We're just a short walk through the woods to the Farmers' Market on Fridays at the Island Community Center, or head into the village for shopping, art galleries, friendly restaurants and the ice cream parlor, or the Opera House for movies and live shows.

Visit the library or the Community Center for internet access. And don't miss the mail boat to Isle au Haut, or take another scenic boat tour!

The original owners of The Forge were dear family friends, Jack and Harriet Hemenway, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of Jack's fine iron work remain in the cabin and around the grounds.

We have remodeled the studio into a rustic yet very comfortable two-bedroom cabin featuring a modern kitchen with soaring ceiling and large windows overlooking the trees and gardens.

A microwave oven and coffee pot are included, along with all the cooking equipment you'll need for your stay. The living room has a lobster-trap coffee table, cozy seating, and lots of light from more tall windows.

The bedrooms and bathroom with shower are upstairs. The master bedroom also has a cathedral ceiling and tall windows that make you feel part of the outdoors -- you'll catch glimpses of the harbor and houses along Green Head Cove.

The second large bedroom has a double and a twin bed plus a real treat: a back door that opens onto a little bridge to the yard, where you can sit among the granite boulders and listen to the birds.

In addition to the two bedrooms, we have a cot and an aero-bed available, as well as a port-a-crib and highchair on request.

Our property is a rustic oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods.

We are Richard and Wilda Eaton, lifelong residents of Stonington. Richard is a direct descendant of the first settler of Deer Isle, William Eaton, in the 1700' s. Wilda's family have been fishermen on the island for generations. Richard loves to play golf and enjoys the summer tournament at the Island Country Club. We have a son, Chris, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, who have three children. Our daughter Pam and her husband Andrew have two children. Wilda loves gardening, tending both vegetables and flowers. We are active volunteers on Deer Isle's Memorial Ambulance Corps and the American Legion. And, of course, we always enjoy spending time with our family and friends.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2009

The Forge is on a beautiful 3.5-acre site on the outskirts of Stonington. It's nestled in the woods among granite outcroppings and paths to explore. My husband was one of its builders back in 1972, and the owners were dear family friends, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of the fine iron work remain in the cottage and around the grounds.

Our property is an oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods. It's just a short walk to the village and the waterfront, a picturesque cove filled with lobster boats and pleasure craft.

GREEN HEAD FORGE EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS!

  • 5 of 5
My three lifelong friends and I travel each summer and have shared many lodging experiences, but we all agree that our stay at Green Head Forge was special in so many ways. The peaceful and beautiful setting, the nearness to everything in Stonington, and the distinctive touches from its earlier days as a forge and studio all combined to make this a unique and welcoming place to stay. Wilda's warm hospitality and helpfulness, not to mention the flowers left in every room, made us feel comfortable and at home from the very first moment. We hated to leave and hope to return again as soon as we can manage it. Many thanks for an extraordinary and lovely stay!

COTTAGE IN THE TREES AND CLOSE TO STONINGTON

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful week last fall at this cozy and comfortable cottage well-stocked with everything we needed. Many windows let you enjoy the outside from all angles. Very clean! The owner has much info about hikes and things to do in the area and it is an easy walk to town where yummy restaurants, art galleries and interesting shopping abound not to mention the beautiful Maine lobster harbor. We are looking forward to going here again and would recommend it to our friends.

END-OF-SUMMER MAGIC

  • 5 of 5
Our family spent a few days here before back-to-school. We had a magical time in this lovely property. We loved the feeling of being hidden in the woods, while still being just a short walk from the harbor-front and town. In the mornings it was like waking up in a tree-house, and we found wild blueberries growing right outside the kids' bedroom door. We had one day of torrential rain, but we were happy staying snug inside and watching the rain come down. We enjoyed exploring Deer Isle - Sand Beach is beautiful, and Barred Island was quite mysterious in the mist. It was fun to watch a movie at the Opera House on Sunday night, and it gave us a sense of what a great community there is in Stonington. We also made a one-day trip to Mt Desert Island and were impressed by the dramatic scenery there (we recommend the Beehive Hike).

STAR GAZING...

  • 5 of 5
As others have said, the photos don't really convey how lovely Green Head Forge is both inside and out. We spent the first week of August there and loved every minute of it! Everything you need and then some is there and ready to use. Wilda is a wonderful person and can answer any questions you have! We had a wonderful family dinner in the kitchen, which was very comfortable, we visited friends, I went swimming - it wasn't tooo cold, we explored the island and went shopping in Ellsworth. At the end of each day, we so looked forward to "coming home" and that's what it felt like. It's a very welcoming and peaceful place, not to mention the beauty. How can you not love a place where as you are going to sleep you can gaze out the huge window at the stars?

KIDS IN TOW....

  • 5 of 5
A perfect place to stay for our family. Walking distance to Stonington waterfront and within minutes of Sand Beach where we tidal pooled during low tide. We had two boys in tow (8 & 14) and there was plenty of space at Green Forge along with interesting things to see and do in Stonington. We watched the lobster boats come in with 100's of pounds of live lobsters, we went to the touch tank on the pier (Penobscot East Resource Center) and ate ice cream at Stonington Ice Cream Company daily. We also rented bikes through Old Ocean Quarry for the day and took their lobster boat/ferry to Isle au Haut. Make sure and do the Cliff trail. It was prettier than many sights at Acadia NP in Bar Harbor. Earlier in the week we rented sea kayaks from this same business and paddled around the islands. Amazing! Green Forge was quiet, clean, and friendly (thanks Wilda). The wild blueberries and raspberries on the property were a bonus. From all that we saw during our week in Maine, Stonington was the best part of the Maine coast and Green Forge was the most private setting in the area.

GREEN HEAD FORGE..A HIDDEN GEM

  • 5 of 5
The setting down a little lane, surrounded by trees, rocks and lush greens help make Green Head Forge a hidden gem. The iron work and metal sculptures add to the interesting design of a former studio. As an artist, it was the perfect setting.
The Forge is very clean and well maintained, with linens, towels and blankets provided. The kitchen was the best equipped of any VRBO we have rented. The bedrooms and living room were spacious and each had a lovely view. Located above the harbor, the Forge is just a few minutes walk through a little path leading to the Farmer's Market (Friday mornings), and Suzy Q's for breakfast and wifi. A walk down to the harbor is a feast for the eyes, allowing you to visit restaurants, shops, galleries (First Friday Art Walk), and the local library for wifi. The community is exceptionally friendly and within a few days we felt like it was "home". Friends joined us part way through our stay and agreed it was the perfect house.
Wilda, the owner, was a delight to meet and we found it hard not to catch her enthusiasm of Stonington and Deer Isle. She is very happy to share any and all information you may need of the area. The fresh raspberries, green beans and day lilies added a lovely homey touch to our stay.
Green Head Forge was perfect for us, and we will return!
