Green Head Forge is on 3.5 beautiful acres on the outskirts of Stonington in a comfortable family neighborhood.
It's nestled in the woods among granite ledges and lichen-covered boulders -- there is even an old quarry on the property! There's lots of privacy and winding paths to explore.
Green Head Cove is at the end of the street, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot than this for launching your kayaks, swimming (brrrr!), or picnicking on the rocks while watching the lobster boats come and go.
Walk a little farther along the cove to Green Head Lobster Company for live lobsters right off the boat! We're just a short walk through the woods to the Farmers' Market on Fridays at the Island Community Center, or head into the village for shopping, art galleries, friendly restaurants and the ice cream parlor, or the Opera House for movies and live shows.
Visit the library or the Community Center for internet access. And don't miss the mail boat to Isle au Haut, or take another scenic boat tour!
The original owners of The Forge were dear family friends, Jack and Harriet Hemenway, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of Jack's fine iron work remain in the cabin and around the grounds.
We have remodeled the studio into a rustic yet very comfortable two-bedroom cabin featuring a modern kitchen with soaring ceiling and large windows overlooking the trees and gardens.
A microwave oven and coffee pot are included, along with all the cooking equipment you'll need for your stay. The living room has a lobster-trap coffee table, cozy seating, and lots of light from more tall windows.
The bedrooms and bathroom with shower are upstairs. The master bedroom also has a cathedral ceiling and tall windows that make you feel part of the outdoors -- you'll catch glimpses of the harbor and houses along Green Head Cove.
The second large bedroom has a double and a twin bed plus a real treat: a back door that opens onto a little bridge to the yard, where you can sit among the granite boulders and listen to the birds.
In addition to the two bedrooms, we have a cot and an aero-bed available, as well as a port-a-crib and highchair on request.
Our property is a rustic oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods.

We are Richard and Wilda Eaton, lifelong residents of Stonington. Richard is a direct descendant of the first settler of Deer Isle, William Eaton, in the 1700' s. Wilda's family have been fishermen on the island for generations. Richard loves to play golf and enjoys the summer tournament at the Island Country Club. We have a son, Chris, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, who have three children. Our daughter Pam and her husband Andrew have two children. Wilda loves gardening, tending both vegetables and flowers. We are active volunteers on Deer Isle's Memorial Ambulance Corps and the American Legion. And, of course, we always enjoy spending time with our family and friends.
Wilda Eaton purchased this cottage in 2009
The Forge is on a beautiful 3.5-acre site on the outskirts of Stonington. It's nestled in the woods among granite outcroppings and paths to explore. My husband was one of its builders back in 1972, and the owners were dear family friends, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of the fine iron work remain in the cottage and around the grounds.
Our property is an oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods. It's just a short walk to the village and the waterfront, a picturesque cove filled with lobster boats and pleasure craft.
thank you so much for the wonderful review, I look forward to seeing you again next summer.
We stayed in August with our 3 year old daughter and had a wonderful vacation. Our daughter could have spent the entire week happily picking the berries on the property. The house is secluded and private, but conveniently located. We walked to town and the farmers' market, and made short drives to Sand Beach, Red Barn Farm, and the wonderful trails throughout the island maintained by Island Heritage Trust. Our daughter loved the model of the quarry operations at the Granite Museum, and we enjoyed cooking in the Forge's kitchen as well as eating out in town. Wilda is a wonderful caretaker of the property. She has great information about Stonington and the island, and she generously gifted us with fresh vegetables from her garden. We will stay at the forge again the next time we visit Maine!
This cottage in the heart of Stonington is an amazing find. It is charmingly rustic in the best sense. Our daughter thought it was a fairy cottage when she first saw it through the trees. Inside though, its magic really unfolds; the architect who designed it was both clever and aesthetic. The master bedroom has great slanting windows that provide you with that "Outside In" effect. We were lucky enough to stay there during a full moon, and the view was incredible. The children's room is cozy and well-appointed with toys and games. If you have older children, they can take a back path through the woods and quickly emerge at a cafe that has not only yummy treats, but (wait for it)- reliable WiFi!! And also a playground across the way. The sense of peace and privacy was wonderful considering that you are almost in the heart of Stonington. We were able to walk everywhere enjoyably, but always felt on our own in nature. And Wilda is a kind and thoughtful hostess. She was available without ever being intrusive, and patiently answered our many questions. Our children really loved it here, and we will try to visit again.
What a terrific job Wilda and Richard have done in making Jack/Harriet Hemenway's workshops and showroom (which I remember so well) into an inviting, comfortable, welcoming vacation spot. They have thought of everything to make this a real "home away from home" vacation destination. Loved every minute of the time there.
My three lifelong friends and I travel each summer and have shared many lodging experiences, but we all agree that our stay at Green Head Forge was special in so many ways. The peaceful and beautiful setting, the nearness to everything in Stonington, and the distinctive touches from its earlier days as a forge and studio all combined to make this a unique and welcoming place to stay. Wilda's warm hospitality and helpfulness, not to mention the flowers left in every room, made us feel comfortable and at home from the very first moment. We hated to leave and hope to return again as soon as we can manage it. Many thanks for an extraordinary and lovely stay!
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful week last fall at this cozy and comfortable cottage well-stocked with everything we needed. Many windows let you enjoy the outside from all angles. Very clean! The owner has much info about hikes and things to do in the area and it is an easy walk to town where yummy restaurants, art galleries and interesting shopping abound not to mention the beautiful Maine lobster harbor. We are looking forward to going here again and would recommend it to our friends.
Our family spent a few days here before back-to-school. We had a magical time in this lovely property. We loved the feeling of being hidden in the woods, while still being just a short walk from the harbor-front and town. In the mornings it was like waking up in a tree-house, and we found wild blueberries growing right outside the kids' bedroom door. We had one day of torrential rain, but we were happy staying snug inside and watching the rain come down. We enjoyed exploring Deer Isle - Sand Beach is beautiful, and Barred Island was quite mysterious in the mist. It was fun to watch a movie at the Opera House on Sunday night, and it gave us a sense of what a great community there is in Stonington. We also made a one-day trip to Mt Desert Island and were impressed by the dramatic scenery there (we recommend the Beehive Hike).
