It has always been a dream of mine to purchase and renovate a home. Paul and I are Connecticut Yankees who adore the Maine coast. In 2005, we found this small cottage in West Bath. While Paul immediately zeroed in on all the work that needed to be done – and it was extensive, I simply looked dreamily at the water view. Location, location, location!
Built in 1940 on posts, the 'camp' was beginning to sink into the ground and was lop-sided. The cottage had to be raised hydraulically and placed on what looked like Lincoln logs while a cement basement was built below to support the structure. The original home was literally gutted – only one exterior wall was left standing while we went to work to rebuild the cottage. It was important for me to maintain the original look and feel of the cottage so that it remained integrated into the surroundings. After much blood, sweat and tears… (and did I mention money?...way over budget!), we completed the bulk of the renovations.
Each year we select additional projects that we hope to complete to further enhance the charm of this little cottage. Almost every item in the cottage has “a story” and a connection to our experience in Maine. It is truly a joy to share our “little slice of heaven” with folks from all over the world.
Dawn Sarro purchased this cottage in 2005
West Bath is located on the Maine coast between Brunswick and Bath, approximately 35 miles north of Portland on Route 1. With the New Meadows River on one side and Casco Bay on the other, West Bath enjoys its coastal character. It is a place of delightful surprises, such as the small, private coves that curl into its salt marshes and sloping fields. Some of the region's loveliest homes rest there at the crests of those fields, overlooking the bay on their doorstep.
Easy drive to Portland, Rockland, Freeport, and Boothbay.
This property is perfect for couples looking for the laid back feel of Maine living. Although the cottage maintains its original Maine-charm, the interior has been totally renovated and offers many updates and amenities. Within a 10 minute drive you will be able to enjoy shopping in Bath and tasting the freshest seafood Maine has to offer.
Bath is known as “Maine’s Cool Little City” - big enough to be a commercial and cultural hub and compact enough to be intimate and walkable, Bath is vibrant, friendly, and a Maine visitor’s paradise. The compact downtown district of the “City of Ships” has lovingly preserved 19th century architecture lining pedestrian-friendly Front and Centre Streets…a hold over from the days of the Tall Ships, and the perfect place for an afternoon of browsing downtown’s many shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.
Just a couple of miles downriver is the Maine Maritime Museum, ranked one of the “Ten Best” maritime museums in the world.
From its vantage point along the Kennebec River at the head of the Phippsburg and Georgetown peninsulas, Bath is also a great central location for enjoying a day at the beach, hiking trails, fishing or deep-water sailing.
Easy drive to Portland, Rockland, Freeport, and Boothbay.
Comment Posted from Cottage Guestbook: "We enjoyed a fabulous long weekend! The cottage was perfect for us. We enjoyed a perfect anniversary getaway. Brunch at Mae's, Autumn Fest, Halcyon Yarn, Popham Beach with the dog and Red Sox games on the couch! It's difficult to leave such a lovely place with the spectacular scenery and pace of life that's just right. We'll be back for sure! Many thanks."
I was looking for a cottage with a waterfront view in a quiet, cozy, charming town. And I found it with this lovely cottage in Bath, Maine! You can tell a lot of care went into the finish out of the cottage. All materials used are top notch and the furnishings are high quality as well (for example, many items in the kitchen were from Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, etc). The decor is cute without being nauseatingly kitschy - very appropriate for the area (i.e., lots of lobster decor!). The bed is very comfy and warm, the softest sheets I've ever experienced! Basically, we had everything we needed - even two lawn chairs and a throw blanket to go enjoy the Bath Swing Band play at the gazebo downtown. Dawn is very communicative about genuinely concerned about the comfort of your stay. She has created a fantastic welcome book that covers everything you'd need to know about the cottage, the town and surrounding areas (dining, activities, etc). It was the most valuable resource for us since cell service was not always reliable (which is EXACTLY what we wanted - to be unplugged). Our favorite activity was enjoying coffee on the two Adirondack chairs on the lawn (as shown in picture), overlooking the calm waters of the cove. It's really beautiful and the neighbors were friendly as well. We hope to make it back to Maine in the future and will certainly stay there again!
We stayed here for a little less than a week. It was so relaxing, sitting by the water, drinking a cup of coffee and just enjoying the stillness. The cottage is cozy and comes with everything you could want. We really enjoyed the town of Bath, and we took a trip to Boothbay Harbor and Portland as well. We'd definitely recommend this property.
We were not disappointed at all. the cottage was more than we ever expected. Anything that you would have needed was made available at the cottage. Beautiful , bright ,sunny! The decorating was nothing short of tasteful . it is close to anything you want to see or do. We spent 2 days just sitting in the yard watching the activity on the water, satisfied with the view and total relaxation. Dawn has a good variety of reading material that I took advantage of. Along with tons of brochures of interest of the State. We would recommend this cozy retreat to any and all. love to go back and we probably will.
We enjoyed our stay, it was our 2nd year here and we had a great time!. We had perfect weather. We went to the Maine Maritime Museum one day and we enjoyed boating on the Kennebec river several days. The city of Bath has so much to offer, a wide variety of restaurants and shops.
Dawn's cottage is very nice, we highly recommend it!
Wow, what a fantastic week spent in Bath, ME at Dawn's cottage! Being right on the water, we were able to enjoy kayaking and beautiful sunsets. On the way home from a day out exploring Bath, Popham Beach or Boothbay Harbor, we could pick up some fresh seafood to cook at home. I work in the travel industry, and I knew that we wanted something different--a home away from home experience and we certainly got it! Thank you Dawn for sharing your beautiful place with us!
My wife and I and our 2 Pekingese spent a wonderful 2 weeks at at this delightful cottage in West Bath. The cottage is spacious with much more room to spread out & relax than we had anticipated, with windows on 3 sides bringing cooling breezes that keep the interior very comfortable even when it's warm outside. The views of the tidal West Meadows River through those windows are to kill for. The cottage includes a full kitchen and a large dining room table, enabling us to invite guests for dinner. We had a great stay & will likely return next summer.
