A-Frame Lodge Overlooking The Mississippi River. Enjoy watching eagles and other waterfowl from your own living room. Some of the best fishing around less than 5 min. away.
We were absolutely delighted with our stay at Sunset Lodge. It is a terrific vacation rental, and well maintained.
The location is fabulous - it isn't "in town," so we felt very much at peace and surrounded by a lovely natural setting. It isn't terribly remote, either, so we had ease access to local amenities, including shopping, movies, etc. It's extremely close to LaCrosse, and not far from Prairie du Chien or Winona (MN), all of which we visited with ease.
During our stay, we enjoyed an extremely picturesque drive to Viroqua for the farmer's market and some shopping. We had a great (and huge!) meal at the Great River Roadhouse (just down the road in DeSoto).
The kitchen is great - on the small side, but manageable, and open to the dining and great room area, so we could all talk while we cooked. Be aware that the stove is apartment-sized, so don't try to do a giant roaster full of turkey or anything. For our group, it was just right.
The layout is at once inviting for groups and comfortable for those who want some privacy. The sleeping areas are all very nice, and make good "retreat" points to get away from the rest of your crowd. The great room (and deck) is terrific for games, conversations, and group activities.
Be aware that you will climb stairs in this house. You enter in the "basement" area, which has a family room space and bedroom and bath area. You must climb a full flight of stairs to get to the kitchen, great room, deck, dining room, and two of the bedrooms (and one bath). The master suite is yet another flight of stairs up from there (with it's own bath). This wasn't really a problem for our group - we had one gal recovering from knee surgery, but she managed by planning her "up and down" trips and keeping them to a minimum. This would not be a good choice, however, for persons who simply cannot do stairs - it would likely be frustrating.
YES, the train tracks go by the Lodge. If you require absolute silence, you won't like it (but, really, what *will* you like??). We LOVED the trains. They don't blow horns (no crossing), so you just hear the low rumble of them moving past.
YES, the highway goes by the Lodge (at the foot of the hill). We barely noticed it.
Perhaps the best idea I can give of how fantastic this place is, however, is to note that, before we'd even gone to bed the first night, we all said "Okay, so, next year, when we come back here..." and were making plans for our next trip to the Lodge.
WOW what an amazing place to spend week the most relaxing vacation I have had in years....everything was clean and very well cared for... the peacefulness of the river and awesome sunsets each evening made me feel I was in total isolation.... but the convenience of being 2 miles to Stoddard and 10 miles to LaCrosse was wonderful so many great back roads to travel on our motorcycle and the LaCrosse Loggers were in town so a minor league ballgame was attended and the fireworks from the balcony on the Fourth of July were great... Definitely an amazing place to spend vacation left feeling totally refreshed and ready to get back to the real world was hard to leave but we will be back....
This beautiful Lodge was just perfect for our group of 7. It had everything we needed and more, even a grill we will plan on using next time we stay. The view is breath taking, the beds were comfy and we had plenty of towels for everyone. Absolutely no complaints and the group gave it rave reviews. Already booking for next year.
We loved this house! We stayed with friends while traveling on our motorcycles. We had 3 couples and there was room for more people! The house was very clean. We enjoyed cooking in the well supplied kitchen. The beds were comfortable. The view of the river was spectacular! We enjoyed riding the Mississippi River Road. The wild life and the campfire were a lot of fun. We will rent this home again. Kelly and Judy were wonderful hosts!!
My cousin and I took our mom's for a little getaway together. The Sunset Lodge was more than we had anticipated! It had 4 bedrooms and 3 baths that worked great for the 4 of us. Nicely decorated and well equipped! The steps were a little much for my mom, but she thought it was worth it for the beautiful view! We came to the area to visit the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe....beautiful and well worth the time spent there. Toured the surrounding area and really enjoyed the Four Sisters Wine and Tapas restaurant in LaCrosse. Recommend the facility to anyone looking for a getaway or reunion. Thank you Kelly and Judy.
We three couples from WI, MN, and IA rendezvoused here for a weekend reunion. The accomodations were immaculate, the kitchen was well equipped, and the amenities (dvd player, cd player, etc...) were nice to have around. The sunsets over the river were spectacular! The little trip we took to the winery was an Amishly pastoral jaunt. Any questions we had both before the stay and during the stay were addressed quickly, pleasantly, and professionally. The outdoor firepit was the frosting on the cake--great to sit around on a chilly Oct. evening! Thanks for a fantastic weekend!
