To be in authentic and natural Hawaii, close to the ocean and untouched by tourists, hotels and resorts.
I love the ocean and the secluded beaches nearby with the wonderful trails leading to them. It feels like 'Old Hawaiiana'. The sounds of the birds, wildlife and whales singing at night in the winter makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors. The tropical garden and romantically furnished interior provide a unique comfort. Lots of wonderful wildlife to encounter.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful Makalani Ocean View Cottage. It was exactly what we needed. Relaxing in a beautiful setting with fresh fruit for breakfast right off the tree is how we started each day. We explored every day but was always greatful to come back for a sunset and dinner on the lani. We will be back!!
We spent seven nights at the Makalani Oceanview, and it was the best getaway we could possibly ask for. When we first pulled into the driveway, it was breathtaking. You're instantly transported into a rainforest/garden, leading you up to the cottage and an amazing view of the ocean. The photos don't do the cottage justice, it is the ultimate place to unwind and reconnect. Harry is a gracious host, giving out as much information as you could want, and yet unobtrusive. The remoteness of the location is ideal if you are truly wanting to get away. No crowds, no noise, no hassles, yet only about 30 minutes from Kona. We look forward to staying here again. Thank you Harry!
We just returned from staying at Harry's place in Captain Cook. We love it! The location was great - close to things we wanted to do, great beaches but removed enough to allow us to fully relax. Loved having a blender to make smoothies with fresh fruit in AM, the snorkeling gear, beach chairs, towel - all came in handy. Harry made the place feel so warm and welcoming with flowers and fresh fruit. Highly recommend this place to anyone and will plan on returning if we make it to the Big Island again
What a view. Harry was a very accommodating host, giving us great info about the area. The cottage is separate from the main house, surrounded by vegetation and very private. We really enjoyed our week here.
We can only say the best about this wonderful cottage!
We (2 adults, two kids 6/8) stayed for seven nights, but wished we could have stayed longer. Harry is a wonderful host who gave us great tips on where to go.
The cottage is beautifully decorated (and thank you Harry for the flowers and the fresh fruit!), the garden is gorgeous, and the kitchen is well stocked.
We also really enjoyed the company of the domestic gecko family.
We highly recommend this place! Many thanks to Harry.

“Breathtaking Oceanviews from Makalani Cottage!”
Makalani Cottage in Captain Cook is a truly authentic Hawaii experience with breathtaking views of the ocean! Harry was such a wonderful host and was very thorough with the booking process, he definitely made everything very easy, fast & pleasant. Once we arrived in Kailua Kona, we hopped into our car rental and headed from Kona airport to Makalani Cottage with very detail directions provided to us by Harry. We pulled up into the driveway and down a hill into Harry's beautifully kept property. We right away noticed all the flora and fauna throughout and immediately had that WOW moment when we saw the two beach chairs overlooking the big, beautiful ocean! The cottage is very tastefully decorated, with beautiful furniture and all the amenities you need to make your stay the best you could ever ask for. Harry greeted us with a beautiful welcoming note and an Island bouquet which was such a nice gesture to walk into. The kitchen is fully equipped, and it had everything we needed to make tasty meals. It was so much fun exprimenting with The Big Islands amazing organic fruits and veggies locally grown by farmers on the Island. We created some culinary favorites, surrounded by nature and geckos all around. The cottage was my dream come true it almost felt like I was in a treehouse! We thoroughly felt renewed and refreshed with a good nights rest on the big beautiful bed that was insect proof! Please note don't forget your bug spray there are mosquitos in Hawaii and you will need some. My boyfriend and I also loved the outdoor shower overlooking the coffee trees growing on property, it was a pleasure taking a hot bath in nature. Last but not least Harry ace'd it with the meditation room which has a swing overlooking the ocean and an extra little bed! The whole experience was a truly unique experience that steers you away from the tourist areas where you can truly get a feel of the real Hawaii. Harry suggested we go to the Punalu'u bakery which had amazing Malasadas, he also gave us endless suggestions on beaches and sites that were truly amazing. The cottage is well appointed and the drive to the Volcanos National Park & Hilo was very pleasant since you really don't feel the time because your intaking picturesque views. Thank you Harry for such a wonderful experience and unique experience!
