About this property

Secluded Lakefront Dog-Friendly Cabin Near Ocean; Extreme Makeover 95% Complete!

This newly expanded, fully renovated cabin has wonderful natural sunlight and privacy on its 2 wooded acres. It is 600 square feet plus a loft, but with large windows and skylights and feels spacious. The property features 250 feet of private waterfront on pristine Six Mile Lake (near the larger town of Machias), with excellent swimming during warm weather and a canoe for guests to use. House-trained dogs of any size are welcome. The cabin is approximately 10 minutes/7 miles from the coastal town of Machias, which has a full-service supermarket (Hannaford), several hardware and outdoor supply stores, a handful of restaurants, and a hospital with a 24-hour emergency room. The original cabin was built in 1998 and was very rustic, with no running water or electricity. Please note that all reviews through 2023 refer to the original cabin and not the renovated one. Photos of the original cabin appear toward the end of the photo gallery.

The cabin does not have a television or Internet or exterior lights of any kind in order to preserve the rustic feel and minimize light pollution. It now has electricity indoors as well as (potable, tested) running water from a new well. It usually receives a decent cell phone signal, depending on your carrier, allowing you to use your phone as an Internet hotspot.

Dogs that like to swim really love this property, and the water access is very good. But please note the property is sloped, with many tree roots along the path between the cabin and the water.

The access road and our driveway are gravel, and though it is well-maintained, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. (Though many of our guests have had no trouble with just a sedan.)

For those looking for a totally secluded, dark sky experience away from light pollution the property will not disappoint.

Completely amazing camp!
I have zero bad to say about this property. We were the first to stay in this all newly renovated cabin. Everything was so functional and nice! Dishwasher, laundry machines, big shower, etc… Very secluded and great place for a family getaway. The beds were so comfy. There are windows everywhere! 369 view of it all. I’m guessing the price might go up but it’s very worth it! Amenities were all there. Easy place to rest your head with luxury feel deep in the Maine woods.

Wonderfully rustic, private, serene
Everything was absolutely wonderful! Even with the unanticipated well digging at the end of our stay, our overall experience was wonderful and we were impressed that the hosts reimbursed us a portion without hesitation given the inconvenience the well dig caused.

Secluded Cabin
When driving up to the cabin I was happy we had taken our truck! The road in would be rough for a smaller car or one lower to the ground. Once at the cabin it was infact secluded, very quite, and absolutely relaxing. During our stay the weather was not the best. It was cold and rainy so having the wood stove was great to keep the dampness and coolness out of the cabin. The out house was obviously just that. Better in comparison to your other options while camping. Between rain we were able to explore the lake in our canoes with an easy paddle. Also the fishing right off the dock is good too! We caught beatiful brook trout and many catfish! We also did some rock painting to add to the ones around the tree on the deck and in the cabin. Finally, town is not far from the cabin should you need to pick up any supplies. Communication with the owner was easy and super responsive to our questions. Over all I would absolutely book this cabin again for myself and family.

Quiet, convenient, and everything I wanted.
I loved staying at this cabin! I had never been to this part of Maine before staying here. I drove up Route 1 from Portland to the cute little (very small) town of Machias, hooked a right and headed into the woods. The cabin is about a 15 minute drive from town, about 30 minutes from Roque Bluffs state park and also pretty close to hiking in Cutler and the Canadian border in Lubec. The Cabin itself is wonderful. It has a very comfortable queen bed on the main floor and two twin beds in the loft. The oil lamps provided great light and ambiance. The woodburning stove gave me a bit of trouble at first but the owners were very easy to communicate with and I was able to get their help to get everything going. The lake is just down the hill from the cabin and the back-porch has an amazing view. There is no one else around so it gets very very quiet and very dark at night which was a very new experience for a city boy like me. There is only an outhouse, which was odd at first but I got used to it. If you are thinking of staying in a rustic cabin then this is the place!

Clean and tidy cabin.
Very clean and tidy cabin for enjoyment inside and outside. We enjoyed games and fully stocked kitchen inside and canoeing and cooking over fire pit outside. Beautiful, quiet and peaceful setting overlooking the lake.

Owners: Anne Golden and Nathan Neorr (rhymes with "more").
Anne is originally from Manchester, Maine, and Nathan is originally from Northern Michigan. Anne taught English as a Second Language at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 18 years after spending 3 years teaching English in Japan. Since 2016 she has worked for the Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati as Executive Director. Nathan is a professional actor (stage, film, television, and radio) and carpenter. They live in Cincinnati with Sunnie, a Bernese Mountain Dog born in November 2023. They spend several weeks at their cabin each year and enjoy sharing it with like-minded people who appreciate Maine's beautiful and remote landscapes.

Why they chose this property

The North Coast region of Maine is often overlooked because it is remote and not as developed as other coastal areas to the south. We consider the area's remoteness a plus. There is very little traffic, noise, air or light pollution, and yet the region still offers everything one really needs in terms of supplies and essential services. Our end of the lake is quiet and relatively undeveloped. The use of powerboats on the lake is restricted, so it's very good for canoeing and kayaking. The fishing can be good in the spring and early summer.

What makes this property unique

The cabin is very private and is located at the north end of Six Mile Lake in the town of Marshfield, Maine, approximately 10 minutes from Machias (pop. 2,500). When you're there, you will see very few people outside of occasional kayakers. It's quiet and clean, completely free of air and light pollution. The star gazing is excellent.

There is excellent hiking along wooded, coastal trails approximately 30 minutes north of the cabin. This area is known as the "Bold Coast." It's relatively undeveloped and uncrowded, even in peak summer months. You can download a free map from a local non-profit organization (see address below).
