Robert Winquist has had extensive experience both as an educator and entrepreneur. He has a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Iowa and was a University Professor, Vice President and administrator for many years. From 1993-2007 he served as the President and CEO of Vending Supply Inc., a Nevada corporation that designed and printed and distributed one billion machine vended children's stickers and temporary tattoos. Robert is a Minister of the Universal Life church, who performs weddings on the beach. He has four beautiful sons and daughters and is an avid fisherman. Robert owns a ranch in the Sierra Laguna mountains, east of Pescadero, and enjoys taking guests on tours of the area.
Robert Winquist purchased this estate in 2004
Growing up in a family that loved camping on the Baja, I always knew I wanted to retire here. Somewhere that was easy to get to, natural and pristine. I drove the entire peninsula many times looking for the perfect spot. Whenever I drove through Pescadero I couldn't stop smiling because it felt so right. I honestly believe this is one of those powerful spots on the planet that attracts good energy. Robert's Place is a gathering spot for friends and family that we are happy to share with others.
Surprisingly, one of the daily benefits I enjoy is driving the single lane dirt farm road that leads 1 mile out to the highway. The experience of slowing way down to enjoy the lushness of the crops and the pace at which they grow is its own reward. The standard of courtesy and kindness exchanged between very different types of people as we pull over to make room for each other is a genuine old Mexico experience.
Another hidden benefit which reveals the relaxing approach to living here is Whale Watching - Pescadero Style. You can sit for hours watching whales breach and spout as they swim past in front of the house. On a calm day it is possible to kayak out and sit quietly as a pod of whales passes within a hundred feet of you. Sometimes they linger for days outside of the breaking waves near shore. If you are the adventurous type, borrow a mask and fins and swim out! Welcome to Whale Watching - Pescadero Style!
Vacationing here is like living in a nature sanctuary. Egrets feed in the tide pools. Fishermen cast from shore for Spanish Mackerel and Rooster fish at dawn. And bonfires on the beach are a tradition. This is the Baja I knew as a child.
While I would rather keep this place secret, I feel like I really should write a review. We spent 7 days at Robert's at the end of Oct and early Nov. Even though it was post Odile, the place is in great shape. Wood burning Jacuzzi was cooking. Amazing views and rooms were really nice. We rented the apartment and it was perfect. If you are looking at something that is like Cabo, stay in Cabo. This is adventure land. You get a true Baja experience here. That's for sure. It's very quiet. Very peaceful. Yet, this is Baja so bring bug spray and flashlights if you want to be out at night. Robert usually stokes a big fire for the guests to hang around at night. You can get food in town to cook or just goto one of the many restaurants that are about 10 min away. You will need a rent car to get here. Really the things to do are surf, relax, hang around the beach, kayaks and Robert can hook you up with a local panga fisherman to go out for some serious fishing. We caught a Marlin!
Part of the greatness of this place is Robert himself. I feel like he is part of the package. You can spend hours with him listening to his stories about the area and his life. A very wise and interesting fellow that is very hospitable and super fun to hang out with. I just can't say enough about this place. I'm going back in several months!
Two girlfriends and I stayed at Dr. Robert's for 3 nights in June and loved every minute of it. We stayed in the second floor apartment which was perfect for the 3 of us, complete with a super comfortable queen bed (really! that was a great bed) and a twin. The apartment looks west over the ocean and opens up onto an awesome deck. It's so lovely going to sleep and waking up to the waves crashing. There's an awesome wood fired hot tub on the property - a great place to hangout at night and gaze at the brilliant stars (and don't worry, that wood keeps the hot tub nice and toasty!). The common areas here are great - I can imagine this place being a great spot for a family reunion or wedding. The waves were a bit too big for our liking to use the kayaks, but I'm sure they would be fun for an experienced kayaker in different surf! Maybe next time. A short ~10 minute drive takes you to Todos Santos to the north and Los Cerritos surf beach to the south. We did some exploring to those destinations, eating copious amounts of tacos/deliciousness in the colonial Todos Santos and surfing (ehem, trying to surf) in Los Cerritos. I just wish we had stayed longer and had more time to lounge on the beach, read, soak up some sun and chill with the resident dog, Izzy (what a sweetie!). Dr. Robert was very accommodating and really has a nice slice of paradise there... What a perfect way to escape the Portland rain. Can't wait to return someday. Thank you Robert!
Dr. Robert's ocean oasis is just that...a wonderful place to leave your worries behind and get away from it all.
I brought my family/friends of eight to Robert's beachfront pad and it was perfect for us. There was plenty of space in the big house and the adjoining apartment. The house has three separate bedrooms and a loft in the great room. The sheets and towels were clean and the house was in nice shape. Bear in mind that this is Baja and any slight imperfections, in my mind, are part of the character of the place. Robert is a gracious host/tour guide and a wealth of information regarding the area. He took our group to a small village in the local mountains and we were able to observe how the real locals live. It was one of many adventures that we had and something we would never have experienced without Robert's help.
All in all we couldn't have been happier with our five day stay and we're already looking forward to coming back. As a side note to all you surfers, the house is ideally suited to the right point break that resides just a short stroll away. The best time to go for surf is between October and April. We got really lucky and had a good swell the entire five days!
We had such a great stay at Dr. Roberts Place. Very relaxing! The balcony on the apartment was a perfect place for us to watch the waves, eat dinner and enjoy the warm weather. Such a beautiful place and Robert was so accommodating. Thanks again! Hopefully we will be back soon.
When we arrived at the Villa we were shocked and disappointed. We were told how many private bedrooms there were...technically there was one as you had to go through a bedroom to get to another and only 1 bathroom for all the rooms. We rented a separate room that when I had to make my own bed the mattress was so filthy I could not sleep as well as sewer was backing up in the shower. One day we ran out of water for our entire house! We were not told ahead of time that due to a shortage of water the hot tub is not filled with water and after seeing it I doubt it works anyway. We came for a wedding and were disappointed as what we were told and what we showed up to was two different things. Sheets with stains as well as towels. A pool table that had tears in it and in general the house is not what was portrayed. Additional family were staying at the Villa next door which was in fact extremely nice! What a disappointment.
We had such a wonderful time at Dr. Roberts. The pictures really don't capture how amazing it is... I literally watched whales jumping from the kitchen make dinner each night. Dr. Robert and Max are fantastic hosts and the property has everything you could want.
It extremely family friendly. Our three year old LOVED the trampoline, and although the surf break is very large, the beach is scene is perfectly safe for little people to enjoy fun in the sun.
We have stayed at VRBO's on four continents and Dr. Roberts place is as good as it gets.
We will certainly be returning and with lots of friends!
