Pipes Canyon Lodge was once referred to as 'The Ponderosa' by locals or 'The Big House' Why? Maybe it was the 12 foot high vaulted, beamed ceilings, or maybe it was the massive stone fireplace in the living room. It is rumored that Pappy himself left his mark on this grand old house. Hmm. A lot has changed since those days. The house can still seat all of its' occupants at a sweeping dining room table with elbow room to spare, but now the meals are cooked in a chef's dream of a kitchen fully equipped with every tool you will need and the spices to make all of your signature dishes. Thermador five burner cooktop, KitchenAid double ovens, dishwasher, refrigerator. Stocked pantry with bar refrigerator. Plenty of room for a handful of chefs to cook an impressive holiday dinner while others make those tangy Mojitos for sunset on the 60 foot veranda. Pipes Canyon Lodge is cozy and intimate enough to be enjoyed by a handful but spacious enough for everyone to sit around the roaring fire and tell ghost stories. There are lots of private venues indoors and out, for pouring over a good book or that script or...
Two more fireplaces and a central heating system ensure that you will be toasty during your stay. One in the dining room that adds to the ambiance of dinners that stretch into the wee hours, and one in the Jacuzzi room adding to the steam you create. The Jacuzzi is centered in it's own 500 foot square room. The spa room doubles as a dorm room and looks out at majestic Black Lava Butte, just 250 feet away. The Butte was recently named ' Ayte'ivyat' by Ernest Silva a respected elder of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. The Serrano Indians lived on this butte and Chiefs and Shamans reportedly performed ceremonial rituals and dances on the peak. It is sacred ground. When see it, you will dance too. Climb it before breakfast and contemplate all that is good in your life.
With forty mile unobstructed views all around, sunsets are not to be missed. Whether from our 60 foot covered veranda or under our shaded pergola. What the heck, try both. Our beautiful boulder monument is there to climb or just ponder. If staying close to home is your scene, just count boulders in the front and backyard.
We are now equipped for retreats. We can accommodate up to fourteen participants comfortably in the house, and we have a separate instructor/s quarters. New this season? Our completely tricked out 1953 Spartan Royal Mansion Trailer. 300 square feet of luxury - 1950's style! Full kitchen! Indoor and outdoor showers. Sleeps two/three or four if you're 'close'! Separate rental fee. Our beautiful 20 x 20 pergola perfect for medicine circles or yoga mats or dining alfresco! Come on, you deserve it! And of course, the Lodge! 2500 square feet of bliss. Incomparable stargazing. Sunset cocktails on your own boulder monument. It's pure heaven. What are you waiting for? If that's not enough, how about the 'wild' backyard directly adjacent to 60,000 acres of wilderness. Oh, and those gorgeous bobcats. Perched on top of Pipes Canyon with views of San Jacinto, Sleeping Indian (Sawtoothe) and Big Bear.
Pappy & Harriets just down the road!!!!
What we cannot describe? The ineffable power and presence of the unseen, the whisper on the wind of a time that was, and the limitless imagination that you bring to this ancient landscape. This is a place where the loudest thing you will hear is your inner voice or the howl of a coyote. Come on up and get reacquainted.

We had no intention of buying in the desert although it has always been our favorite place to reset our spirits. A friend invited us for tea in Pipes Canyon. On the way there, we agreed we would never want to live in a place so remote. After twenty minutes at their house, we called a realtor who brought us to this magical property. The sheer drama of the panoramic views, the power of Black Lava Butte and we were hooked. We made an offer the next day and we have never looked back. As artists, we cherish the inspiration we always find in Pipes Canyon and we adore sharing this wonderful hideaway with fellow artists and thinkers from around the world. After 13 years, this little pocket of wonder continues to thrill and inspire us.
The play of light from dawn to starry night sky. The wildlife. The brilliant colors of the sunsets. Soaking in the indoor mineral spa with a warm
fire burning. The warmth of the stone fireplace in the great room, 'sit down' dinners in the luxurious formal dining room, cooking in the amazing
and perfectly stocked kitchen, hiking in the 60,000 acre 'park like' wilderness out the front door, waking to the golden glow of the sun coming up
on black lava butte, just outside your window. Watching the sunset from the boulder monument on the property or from the 60 foot covered front
This place was excellent. I led a retreat here and it was the perfect spot. The setting, the accommodations, the Jacuzzi, the mountains... Just fantastic! Will definitely be returning.
A group of 15 of us stayed here for the weekend and couldn't have had asked for a better home for the weekend. It's in the perfect location and has tons of space for a large group to get comfortable in.
I would HIGHLY recommend staying at Pipes Canyon Lodge! The amenities are perfect and the hosts are available to answer any questions that you may have. I would definitely stay here again!
Ahhh...what an incredible weekend we got to have at Pipe's Canyon Lodge! For one of my (big) birthdays, I wanted to have friends gather, instead of having a huge party (got to have that, too, at Pappy and Harriets!!). About 20 friends came, and we cooked delicious food in the best stocked kitchen I have ever experienced in a weekend rental, or even most homes! We hiked in the butte. We sat by the fire at night. We napped in the comfy beds. Much of the time was spend outside starring at the vistas, chatting about life! Perfect birthday weekend, at the most incredible home. Pam and Steve were amazing hosts, responding quickly to questions, making sure we were comfortable. Everyone fell in love with the place. All were sad to leave. It really was such the most incredible place to have my birthday weekend. We are coming back in September to celebrate another big event...this is now our go-to place for gatherings. Thank you Pam and Steve for creating such a special place! XO Deirdre
My husband and I just wanted to let you know that Pipes Canyon Lodge was the perfect location for our recent family reunion. We were 9 folks in total and every single person was comfortable and had a place to call their own. The large living room was ideal for evening and afternoon gatherings, the dining room and kitchen gave us the perfect place to enjoy family meals and the "jacuzzi" room was ideal for relaxing and provided us with the comfortable sleeping arrangements that we needed for this large group. I would not hesitate to recommend your Pipe Canyons Lodge to anyone for a large family gathering or a small intimate get-away. Thanks for everything that was done to make this the best vacation ever. The owners left us plenty of information on the area and made sure that we had everything we needed to enjoy the property to it's fullest potential. We plan to make this our family reunion location for years to come.
We needed an escape from the grind and smog of post holiday L.A. and what we got was our souls back. This was a repeat visit to the High Desert, but we'd never experienced the beauty that was awaiting us at The Pipes Canyon Lodge. Everywhere you look: sitting on the front porch, through the kitchen window, around the out door dining table, or from the jacuzzi tub -- the desert landscape is breath-taking. We got up at sunrise (something we never do in L.A.) just to see the light travel across the mesa. And cocktail hour on the porch is a dazzling display.
Pam is the perfect host. She anticipated anything we could have wanted. She gave us excellent directions from L.A. and then had great suggestions for where to eat on our drive in. And she's not kidding when she says that kitchen is ready to cook in. Wonderful stocked spices, pots and pans.
But if that wasn't reason enough, the house was so well designed, THREE fireplaces! A Piano! All the modern amenities you could want to cook with. And the stove, that's a stove for hearth meals. The beds were perfect. Pam and Steve have a huge library of books that were perfect for every mood -- mysteries, westerns, literature, plays, history, biography -- I never wanted to leave the cozy couch.
The house is beautifully laid out that even though we had friends with us we never felt we were living on top of one another. There are thoughtful touches in every room, a centerpiece of desert succulents, wonderful art on the walls, and painted desert throw rugs. The jaccuzzi was exquisite in-doors with nearly a 360 degrees views of the mesa and butte. It feels like you've stepped into the desert hideaway used for a Ralph Lauren photo shoot.
We could have spent the whole three days sitting and watching the light travel across the sky, tuned in to the "desert tv" station but we roused ourselves for some hikes. We've hiked the trails of Joshua Tree National Park and these hikes in Pipes Canyon were every bit as splendid but without the crowds and the liter they leave. We ventured into town and had a blast at Pappy's and Harriet's. The band was tight that night but I hear that's just what you expect every night at the joint.
We can't' stress enough how magical a place Pipe's Canyon Lodge is...clean, quiet, warm. It's just the perfect place to go to breathe the clean desert air and lay in the many lounge chairs and look up at the stars.
The first thing we did upon getting back to L.A. was start planning our next trip back.
I don't even know where to begin when it comes to reviewing our stay at Pipes Canyon Lodge. What I can say is that we just had one of the best vacations EVER, due in no small part to this house and the incredible energy that came along with it.
First, the house: phenomenal inside and out. We enjoyed the jacuzzi, the cozy beds with electric blankets, the three fireplaces, the piano, the guitar, the stocked kitchen. Excellent showers/bathrooms (3!), inviting dining room table, cozy kitchen table where we played Pictionary (provided) for the first time! Outside -- what can I say? The views, the views! The sky came alive with sunrises and sunsets, and even mid-day provided the bluest skies I'd ever seen. Snow in the distance, rocks everywhere you turn ... we even saw rainbows more than once. Finally, the star-gazing ... I can't tell you the last time I pondered the Little Dipper, O'Ryan's Belt and we saw several shooting stars. Put down the iPhones and look UP!
Next, the people: Pamela and Steven went out of their way to email, call and make sure we were set up with every need. They were SO ATTENTIVE to make sure that we were comfortable. Their local contacts, Laurel and John, were beyond accommodating. I felt like we really met soul mates in them ... they love the desert and their energy was infectious. I cannot say enough about how genuine and helpful they were. Such good salt-of-the-earth people and they influenced our stay in such a positive way.
Finally, the area: this was our first trip to the Joshua Tree area and um, yeah, the desert is NOT Palm Springs! THIS is the real deal, people. I never thought I was a "desert person" until this trip. We will DEFINITELY be back. From eating at Pappy and Harriets (highly recommended) to rock climbing at "The Monument" (aka JT National Park ... oh yeah, we know the lingo now), this was truly one of the best trips our family has ever taken.
Our only regret is that we could not stay longer and spend more time at the house. We will have to remedy that and come back again, REAL soon. Thank you Pamela, Steven, Laurel and John. Trip of a lifetime. THANK YOU!
Bouldering, rock climbing. Close to Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown. Eight minute drive. Adjacent to 60,000 acre wilderness.
