Caution: Difficult to get deposit back

Absolutely beautiful house! My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier! The house was amazing and we had the beach to ourselves the entire week - it was a perfect honeymoon destination. Our frustrations began when, nearly 8 weeks after our stay, we still had not received our deposit back. We sent several emails, and left several phone messages, to the owner, without a single response. We even went as far as to threaten legal action, and still received no response. After some time, we decided to cut our losses. Then, this winter my husband decided to have another go at contacting the owner. We sent a request to the owner, asking about the cost of the deposit to rent the house, and received an email response within days. Once my husband told him who we were, and that we still had not received our deposit, the owner stopped responding. After yet another email, the owner finally responded, saying simply that a check was being mailed to us and he was sorry that it was late. It's now been more than a week since that response and we still have not seen the check. We had hoped to return to this house each year to celebrate our anniversary, but at this point we are just hoping to get back the money that was promised to us.
Owner's Response: In response to this review I indeed was not prompt in returning this couples security deposit. There was damages done to the property and I was trying to come to an agreement on the amount to be deducted from the deposit. They would not agree to any amount to be deducted. Since then the security deposit has been returned. I emailed and asked for a posting stating that it was paid and received no response. If we do rent in the future no security deposit will be paid by tenant, instead a insurance policy through Home Away called the Property Damage Protection by CSA will need to be taken out by the tenant. I hope that this review response was helpfull in explaining the situation.
