Loiza is a town rich in traditions, located 12 miles away from San Juan metro area. You can go there by several routes, the scenic Rd 187 along the coastline, the old PR3 and the new tollway Route 66. It is also minutes away from the towns of Luquillo and Fajardo. St Patrick Church (1645) in Loiza is the oldest on the island still active as a parish church. Loíza is the best place to sample the Puerto Rican variety of Afro-Caribbean cuisine. The Loíza Carnival celebrates the African heritage of the town of Loíza. This annual folk festival, the week of July 25, features a religious ceremony, carnival, parade, floats, costumes, masks and bomba dancers. A lively Afro-Caribbean dance, bomba is at the root of the Puerto Rico's African heritage.
