Your Hosts: Linda and Bruce. We have enjoyed many trips to the Okanagan over the years. We purchased our 80 acre property and moved to Oliver at the end of 2007. After 25 plus years working in the film industry in Vancouver, Linda now enjoys running the High Chaparral Guest House. Bruce continues to commute between Vancouver and Oliver working on various film projects during the week. We live in a separate residence on the acreage with our house dogs, Dunbar and Oliver and Angus the cat.
Linda Sheehy-Brownstein purchased this chateau / country house in 2007
High Chaparral is unique and unlike anything else offered in the area. The scent of ponderosa pine and wild sage enchant the senses while the breeze whispers through the trees. Our property is home to many species of birds, including grouse, sage thrashers, bluebirds, hummingbirds, eagles, hawks and vultures. In the Spring many beautiful wild flowers cover the surrounding hills. Ancient deer paths are present throughout the acreage, still used today by our resident deer and are an easy hike for our guests. Oliver is home to world class restaurants and over 40 award winning wineries.
While set in privacy of the pristine wilderness - we are only 10 minutes from Main St., Oliver. From High Chaparral Guest House you can visit over 30 wineries, 2 golf courses, many hiking trails, 3 lakes. After a day of wine tasting, you can return to the guest house, prepare your dinner and enjoy some of our local wines, while taking in the spectacular sunset. High Chaparral has two private suites, each with a separate entrance. A fully equipped kitchen is available for your use at no extra cost.
My husband and I were looking for a place in Oliver near our wedding venue. We had a voucher and used it for 3 nites. We are so glad we stayed the extra 3rd. night. Our usual holiday is one of busyness so to be less busy and more liesurely was a new experience for us. We loved it's serene setting the best sleep I have had in ages, no noise of cars , sirens or traffic just total stillness. We toured wineries , went to the town beach, star gazed to the wee hours of the night, no mosquitoes,a big plus. Used the very modern shared kitchen for 2 meals and some coffee time it has a personal fridge with each counter side, the only thing shared is really the stove, the large barbq and sink otherwise the kitchen area is separated, One day we watched a mama black bear playing with her cub on the nearby hillside a national geographic moment for us, also lots of deer on the property. The units are well designed with impressive wood beams in keeping with a southwest flavor very nicely furnished you won't be dissapointed, comfortable large bed. Complimentary wine coffee and condiments. Lots of nice places to eat in the area. We would love to come back and stay sometime as it holds a special place in our hearts.
My husband and I stayed at High Chapparel for three nights in May of this year. It is truly one of the most peaceful and fragrant getaways we have ever experienced. When we were there the Balsam was blooming, so there were yellow flowers all over the dry hills. The pines were responsible for the fragrance. We enjoyed the walking, and I enjoyed going for long runs on the quiet country roads in the area. Our bedroom was very comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped. The architecture adds to the sense of peace. We had a lovely time. We took our dog as well, and we were made to feel very welcome to walk her on the property with us.
We stayed three nights at high chaparral. It was easy to find, quiet, and Oliver and the okanagan are all close by. Ammenities are great, hosts were lovely, suite is very comfortable. Would go back!
The perfect get away. The High Chapparal covers everything most of us are looking for...a beautiful view of grasslands, forest and mountains. No light or noise pollution - just a peaceful, relaxing setting. The guest house is well-appointed (we enjoy barbequing on the deck), reading in our private sitting room (we even turned on the fireplace for ambiance).
The special welcome from our hosts was again much appreciated.
Highly recommended for a couple's getaway or to spend time with special friends who also have their own private suite to retire to. It is less than 10 minutes to great wineries and we've enjoyed lunch at both Tinhorn Creek and Hester Creek.
My family (three adults, two older teens) and I enjoyed two wonderful days at the guesthouse on the May long weekend. The rooms were comfortable and nicely finished and the adjoining kitchen was modern and practical. Best of all was the covered veranda, where we ate our meals and watched a parade of birds and wild animals pass by. Loved the recliner chairs as well, which one could position to enjoy the tranquility. The hiking around the guest house was easy and beautiful in May. We met our hosts Linda & Bruce on one of our strolls; they were both friendly and informative. The two suites seem best suited to couples but worked well for us due to the perfect weather (we couldn't really dine inside for lack of space). The addition of a space heater outside could make early mornings/late evenings more comfortable in the shoulder season or on rare rainy days. Overall, the best thing about the place was the privacy (you're all by yourself in pristine Okanagan hill country) and the beauty around you. Oliver is about 15 minutes away by car and Sawmill Lake, a catch-and-release fishing lake about 20.
