Great place, safety and security concerns
Six of us (all 50+ adults) stayed in this beautiful cottage at a great beach location in April. The other reviews are accurate as this place is truly wonderful. Unfortunately, we experienced significant security issues while staying at this property. On our first night, there was an attempted entry through the kitchen window (accessible from the roof of the carport) and vandalism to 2 cars parked just outside the cottage. 2 days later, an intruder entered the cottage while we were sitting on the beach front side of the property in the middle of the afternoon, stole hundreds of dollars in cash from 2 purses left in our bedrooms and stole 2 gold rings. Police was called and reports were filed. Concerned for our safety, we asked to be moved to a different property. If you stay at this property, ask for the security code to the entry door to be changed to a new code, keep all lights on at night (even if they asked to turn them off due to turtle season) and ask for a safe for your valuables. Of all vacations away we have taken, this was our first experience with criminal events, not a great way to spend a well deserved holiday. Property owner was less than sympathetic to our experience.
Owner's Response: This guest had an unfortunate experience, however they take no responsibility for the event which is both sad and disturbing. For the first couple days they continued to call my local property manager to come over because they were having issues. Couldn't figure out remote control for TV, wanted to get into locked owners closet, the list goes on. Each time he showed up the door was unlocked and they claimed it was too complicated for them to figure out?? Each time the propert manager explained the keyless door system with the additional security latch.
Upon being contacted by this guest, I was threatened that if I didn't make good for the "Missing Items" that they would go to the internet to warn everyone. I tried to explain that if you rent a car and leave your wallet in the unlocked car it isn't the fault of the rental car agency. Very sad how some people still can't take responsibility for their actions.
On a final note, Please be aware that the turtles are Federally protected. You need to follow the rules. You can leave your interior lights on all night long as long providing the drapes are closed. You have to be careful of outside lighting rules. The rules ( which this guest wants you to ignore are posted clearly).
I truly love this property and hope that every one who has the oportunity to visit has the same experience as all of my other guests.
All feel free to contact me
