I've always liked to travel and explore. As a kid, if I wasn't hiking to, and camping in, places I should not have been, I was riding my bike to places too far from home for a girl on her own. As an adult, I've continued this proud tradition by taking off to far away places as often as I can (photo: Ring of Brogar, Scotland).
The Owner purchased this apartment in 2008
Sailed across the entire Pacific Ocean on a 29' sailboat. This took a few years. I saw gorgeous beaches all along the way. Started in San Diego (US), south to Cabo (Mexico), across Polynesia (Marquesas, French Polynesia, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand); ended this particular trip by sailing the entire length of the Great Barrier Reef. Of the many beautiful beaches I’ve seen, I choose to live at Waimanalo because the color of the water and the incredible mountain views take my breath away each and every day. Plus I get to live in Hawaii, a place with the beach and easy availability of Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia. Can't beat that.
Hale 'Nalo is an intimate getaway located in a gorgeous unspoiled tropical beachside setting. Simplicity, quiet, solitude, ocean, birdsong for baby boomers looking for a relaxing retreat and rejuvination of body and spirit. Namasté.
(4-Star Review as posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo)
We stayed in the Treetop suite at Hale Nalo in June 2014 and had a wonderful visit.
On one side you have the beach, which is just 200 yards down the street (easily walkable even when carrying a chair and boogie boards) and the other side you have the mountains.
You have 2 porches so you can sit and enjoy either or both.
The beach has plenty of sand, small waves and is not crowded at all.
The location is ideal for accessing Sandy Beach, Hanauma Bay or Kailua. It was only 30 minutes to Honolulu too and we didn't have to fight the crowds there.
Our host was very welcoming with lots of good suggestions for hikes, shopping and restaurants. Be sure to try Sweet Home Waiamanalo for delicious salads and sandwiches. It's within walking distance.
The home has boogie boards, beach chairs, ice chests and towels you can borrow when you want to head to the beach.
A few things to note.
1. There is no oven or stove in the suite, so keep that in mind when planning meals in. There is a hot plate and an outdoor grill though.
2. The suite will accommodate 3, but is really set up for 2 as there are only 2 chairs at the outdoor dining table and 2 stools at the bar.
3. Don't let the first house on the street throw you. It's not an accurate representation of the neighborhood. We found it extremely quiet and safe.
4. The apartment does not have air conditioning, but even in June, we didn't need it. Lots of cool breezes coming off the water.
5. It rained almost every evening, but by morning it would be clear and sunny.
6. There were guests below us in both apartments, but we didn't hear a peep from either. Noise wasn't a factor.
Overall it was a very pleasant stay and we would gladly stay here again.
We had the most amazing 8 night stay. The apartment looked exactly like the photographs, and the beach was a 3 minute walk. There was a perfect balance between being looked after by the owners, without it ever feeling intrusive. We chose it for peace, sunshine & rest, which is exactly what we got. Can't wait to stay there again.
We had a very nice and relaxing stay at Hale Nalo. We stayed in the Zen Treehouse and it was absolutely beautiful. It's very convenient to a great beach and a few local restaurants. When we needed some groceries to make breakfast, we drove 15 minutes away to the Whole Foods. Wayne was very informative, welcoming, and helpful. We would love nothing more than to come stay again!!
Our stay at Hale Nalo was the most relaxing vacation experience we could have asked for. We stayed in the Zen Tree House, which is a spacious, fully equipped and beautifully designed studio apartment situated one half block from the beach. We enjoyed the early morning on our private deck watching the dawn light illuminate the green volcanic peaks of the Pali, sipping robust Kona coffee and eating delicious local papaya and other local delicacies provided by our gracious resident host, Herlinda. We would then walk a few steps to Waimananlo Beach, which is certainly one of the most beautiful stretches of white sand and turquoise water in the Hawaiian Islands. We would spend the day sunning, swimming, reading, and just relaxing into the quiet beauty of this place. At some point we would rouse ourselves to walk a few steps to one of the nearby take-out ktichens offering a wide variety of simply-prepared, but tasty food, ranging from barbecue to seafood to vegetarian dishes. We fell asleep each night listening to the sounds of the ocean. Hale Nalo is a refuge for adults who are looking to get away from the noise and chaos of modern life and to spend a few days in a natural paradise. We highly recommend it.
We travelled to Oahu in the second week of May 2014. We had been to other Hawaii islands before but this was our first trip to the island of Oahu. Before the trip, we had heard all sorts of things about Oahu such as how commercialized the place is and that it is not worth the cost if you had visited other islands. But we wanted to visit all Hawaiian islands at least once before we made up our mind and our stay at Hale Nalo rental certainly made our trip worth.
The place is less than 100 steps away from the beautiful Waimanalo beach. The beaches on the eastern Oahu (windward side) are all beautiful but the Kailua bay area and the stretch of beach until Waimanlo are just majestic. Hale Nalo location is not too far from Hanauma bay (one of the best free snorkeling spots) and Waikiki. It is also 5 minutes drive to Kailua downtown, home to some great eating options and a must-not-miss Thursday farmers market.
We had rented the Zen suite which is on the second level and it has got a great open layout with a decent size kitchen, living and a large master suite with a beautiful master bath. The master suite has a very comfortable king bed. Living room has got a small tv + dvd. Herlinda (our host) maintains a great collections of evergreen movie DVDs and books.
Kitchen is equipped with all basic things such as coffee maker, portable hot-plate, toaster, refrigerator and plenty of pots/pans and plates. The unit does *not* have a dishwasher.
The unit has 2 patios on either side of kitchen+living room. One of the patio has a decent size gas grill and we even helped ourselves with a BBQ day.
Downstairs are 2 other guest rooms and common living room and a common laundry area with washer/dryer. There is parking space for only 3 cars (1 per guestroom) but you could park outside the house. There are plenty of free-to-use beach chairs, coolers, body-boards and snorkel gear available.
Herlinda and Sophie (her lovely pet) were great hosts. Herlinda would meet us every morning and answer all our touristy questions, recommend places to eat and made a great eatery suggestion of "Sweet home Waimanalo" (we highly recommend that place). She even brought us freshly picked cherry tomatoes from her garden.
All in all, it was a great stay and we would definitely come back here next time we vacation in Oahu.
The Zen Treehouse is unreal, it's even bigger than the photos make it look. The kitchen is huge, the bathroom is huge and beautiful, the shower is AMAZING! We were so happy we decided to splurge on this for the last week of our honeymoon. Waimanalo beach is the best beach in Oahu as far as I'm concerned. It's quiet, calm and you can walk for hours along it!
The tree house is only cooled by fans but there are extra's in the closet. Heat sensitive seniors may want to beware, but we were fine with the fans.
This is a wonderful space to come to for a relaxing and quiet time in Hawaii. The unit is spacious, clean, well-equipped, and, most of all, enjoyable. Just a five-minute walk from the beach. In a quiet neighborhood. Herlinda is very respectful of your privacy, but also right nearby ready and willing to deal with any questions or concerns that come up.
We are located in a quiet residential neighborhood, convenient to anywhere on Oahu.
