This unique home, known as 'Granny's COTTAGE' , has been updated and modernized, retains WARMTH AND CHARM, and is ideal for someone seeking a short-term rental (1-6 months), or for a family coming to see the WASHINGTON, DC sites!
On an acre of lawn and gardens, the brick cottage has 2 cozy upstairs bedrooms and wide wood plank flooring. Downstairs is a modern kitchen, living room with flat screen TV, dining room, small den with pullout sofa, and bathroom. A favorite feature is Granny's screened in porch where one can enjoy breakfast while watching Virginia's beautiful birds.
The home is 4.5 miles north of Historic Mount Vernon, and 4.5 miles south of Old Town, Alexandria. Within walking distance of parks for hiking and biking; minutes from the Potomac River and the American Horticulture Society (George Washington's River Farm). There is easy access to Washington, DC: 11 miles ride by car or bike, or an easy commute by bus and/or metro. The expansive yard has plenty of room for outdoor games and cookouts.
My husband, three children and I moved next door to this property in 1984. The wonderful neighbor, who came to be known as 'Granny', maintained a lovely home, and we were fortunate to purchase it in 1999. We live next door to the property, and are available to renters for guidance. In the past several years, local families have rented the cottage while renovating their home, and international students have occupied it while in DC for a semester of study. When not working in the gardens, I work as a nurse, and my husband has his own business. Our Portuguese Water Dogs keep us busy now that the kids are grown.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1999
Our family of 5, including kids ages 15, 13, and 10, stayed here for 4 nights on our spring break trip to DC. The cottage was charming and filled with quality furnishings and plenty of extra touches. Kitchen came with some basic spices, oil, etc. which is always nice. Jim and Lisa offered a campfire, Mt. Vernon passes ( saved us $100!), and a couple of bikes. Didn't have enough time to enjoy it all! The yard and neighborhood were beautiful and nice to run through, plus the bike trail was only a couple blocks away...great place to run along the Potomac! Our kids loved the cottage too and wished for more down time to just hang out there. Highly recommend!
My husband and I and our 2 adult-sized kids stayed in the cottage for a full week and can't say enough good things about it. Wonderful location for seeing all the DC sights and the surrounding area. We drove into town each day and although parking was not plentiful, we always found some. The owners are great, are available if there is a problem, but stay out of your way. The cottage itself is charming and has enough room to be very comfortable. A great place to unwind after each busy day. I was a little bit skeptical that it would turn out to be all I imagined from the photos, but was not disappointed. We would return again in a heartbeat. Highlights for us were the Capitol tour, Mt. Vernon, Annapolis, and the charm of Alexandria.
This cottage was perfect for our family. It was so nice and clean. The owners are incredibly helpful. They gave us a free pass for Mount Vernon which saved us $60. On our Saturday night they lit a fire for us to enjoy. I highly recommend a stay here.
My wife, our 2 year old son and I stayed here and absolutely loved it. The place was terrific as we were looking for something quiet and with space so we didn't feel crowded. The property is very spacious and this allowed for our 2 year old to run wild. It was a 5 minute drive to Mount Vernon and a pretty quick commute to DC. The Coakleys (property owners) were beyond kind and ready and willing to help in any way they could. Would highly recommend.
My daughter-in-law and I came to Virginia to see my granddaughter who is attending college in Winchester. We stayed in Granny's Cottage to be closer to DC and the surrounding area. We loved the cottage even though we had trouble with the hot water heater. Jim and Lisa were very nice and tired everything to fix the problem. The cottage is everything that we expected and more. We would love to come back again and I would recommend the cottage to anyone who is coming to the DC area.
Granny's cottage is adorable, comfortable, and beautiful. This cottage is better than the pictures represent. The neighborhood is beautiful, there is easy access to Metro station and grocery stores. It is especially close to Mount Vernon - a must see. Old town Alexandria was worth a full day of exploring. The Torpedo Factory has been turned into art lofts. The artists were busy working on their artistic projects that you can watch and purchase. We loved coming home from a busy day of touring to the very well appointed kitchen, grilling local veggies and hanging out in the outdoor patio. Morning coffee was delicious while rocking in huge chairs, watching the squirrels and birds in the covered patio area. I have rented many VRBO houses from the Caribbean islands to Central America, to the United States. This Cottage and the owners are truly an A-list delight. Thank you Lisa and Jim.
