This unique home, known as "Granny's COTTAGE" , has been updated and modernized, retains WARMTH AND CHARM, and is ideal for someone seeking a short-term rental (1-6 months), or for a family coming to see the WASHINGTON, DC sites!

On an acre of lawn and gardens, the brick cottage has 2 cozy upstairs bedrooms and wide wood plank flooring. Downstairs is a modern kitchen, living room with flat screen TV, dining room, small den with pullout sofa, and bathroom. A favorite feature is Granny's screened in porch where one can enjoy breakfast while watching Virginia's beautiful birds.

The home is 4.5 miles north of Historic Mount Vernon, and 4.5 miles south of Old Town, Alexandria. Within walking distance of parks for hiking and biking; minutes from the Potomac River and the American Horticulture Society (George Washington's River Farm). There is easy access to Washington, DC: 11 miles ride by car or bike, or an easy commute by bus and/or metro. The expansive yard has plenty of room for outdoor games and cookouts.

About The Owner

My husband, three children and I moved next door to this property in 1984. The wonderful neighbor, who came to be known as "Granny", maintained a lovely home, and we were fortunate to purchase it in 1999. We live next door to the property, and are available to renters for guidance. In the past several years, local families have rented the cottage while renovating their home, and international students have occupied it while in DC for a semester of study. When not working in the gardens, I work as a nurse, and my husband has his own business. Our Portuguese Water Dogs keep us busy now that the kids are grown.

Our family from NM was delighted to have chosen Granny's Cottage for a 10-day stay. The gardens and lawns of this elegant neighborhood were at their springtime peak, and the cottage itself was everything we'd hoped for and exactly as depicted here. We were able to prepare meals and even host friends; we appreciated the nearby Whole Foods and other stores. The twin beds make up into a king with the addition of a mattress topper, which made my husband and me extra comfortable, while our 20-something daughters enjoyed the double bedroom and the sleep sofa in the study. We couldn't get enough of just sitting on the screened porch, listening to birdsong and enjoying the view at all times of day and evening. Our family and friends were envious of this gem. Best of all, hosts Lisa and Jim were like new-found friends, as kind and helpful as we could have wished. If you have the opportunity to stay at Granny's Cottage, snap it up!

What a fantastic place to retreat to while sight seeing the hussle and bustle of DC and surrounding area. Close enough to be near all the action, yet a private and quiet place to come home to at night. Owners are wonderful and very welcoming. Cottage has everything you need and it is very comfortable and clean. We will definitely be returning!

Cozy Alexandria Cottage

Lovely comfortable cottage in a peaceful location just a few minutes drive from Old Town Alexandria and around half an hour's drive from Washington DC. Loved sitting having breakfast in the porch looking at the birds in the feeder just outside in the lovely colorful garden. The cottage had everything our family of 4 required -- 2 adults and 2 16-year-olds -- plenty of crocery in the kitchen, washing machine and drier, WIFI. Mt Vernon is a few miles up the road -- or as my kids found out a nice half an hour bike ride along the Potomac, using bikes Lisa and Jim supplied. I wouldn't hesitate to return if we were in the DC area again.

Our stay in "Granny's Cottage" made our wonderful trip all that much better! In fact, when people ask me what my favorite part of our trip was, I tell them it was this cottage! To come "home" to a peaceful setting after long days exploring was my dream come true. The cottage was perfectly updated, sparkling clean, the grounds were beautiful, and the owners, Jim and Lisa (not to mention their fun-loving dogs that had great fun playing with our son...), were quite pleasant to chat with. When Jim noticed our interest in watching the birds congregate on their feeders, he moved them to sit in front of our screened-in porch. Believe me, we took full advantage of that view! I would not hesitate to recommend this amazing place!
