Why Kathy Rose chose Freeland

I love the beach and neighborhood, a great place to walk shady tree lined streets away from busy traffic. It is private, friendly and so close to anything you might want or enjoy. No franchises in South Whidbey so you can shop supporting small businesses. Wine tasting, wonderful farmers markets, studio art tours, great unique music at local coffee houses.

What makes this house unique

Viewing nature, the pristine beach, eating from the garden & shellfish out your front door, . I love to kayak, paddle board, boat and bicycle from my front door Free public buses into Freeland on weekdays. A huge variety of quiet forested walking trails and an even bigger selection of beaches to walk along. The ferry ride is a 12 minute ride from Mukilteo to Clinton. Go upstairs in the ferry to enjoy the 360 degree views of the islands and Cascade Mountain range on the trip.

Can't wait to go back!

Our son, wife and 2 year old grandson live in Seattle so we visit there often. We decided to get out of the city and were lucky to find the Seashell Beach House on Whidbey Island was available on such short notice. The owner was very responsive and her instructions were detailed and helpful. The house was very clean and everything was in good working order. The bathrooms looked like they had been remodeled fairly recently as were the kitchen counters, appliances and sink. The carpet and furninshings looked newer also. There was a great looking gas grill but we did not get to use it since it was pretty chilly and damp while we were there. Next visit!
Even though the weather was not very cooperative on Saturday, we still enjoyed just hanging out together. Loved sitting in the window seat and watching the birds and other wildlife. We were lucky enough to see an eagle in the trees and loved the show the dozen or so seals put on for us. We could hear them coming Saturday morning from quite a distance. They spent a couple of hours right out in front of the house and were very entertaining.
Our grandson couldn't wait to get down to the beach. The minute we got there he was in his boots and dragging us out the door. The beach in front was a little boys delight! He couldn't get enough of rock throwing and shell collecting. The owner had a few toys there, mostly trucks and cars, which he loved playing with. The high chair and pack and play they provided were great! Nice not having to drag that stuff along. Having a grocery store 5 minutes away was very convenient too. The kitchen had pretty much everything you could think of. We even cooked a corned beef and cabbage in honor of St Paddy's day while we were there.
It was great finding a place with 2 Queens and 2 bathrooms. So many of the rentals we looked at had twins or doubles in the second room. The beds were very comfortable and the view from the upstairs bed was really nice! We had wondered where the grandson was going to sleeep....but he even had his own little room as there is a spacious walk in closet in the master so we set him up in there.
All in all a very relaxing weekend but too short. Hope to go for longer next time!

Owner's Response: Hello Carol,

I'm always delighted when guests enjoy their stay. I'm always striving to improve my service, the home and gardens.

In March the grey whales sometimes cruise into Holmes Harbor on their way to Alaska. They feed here when the supply of ghost shrimp abounds. In 2011 there was a pod of 3 in front of the house about 50 yards off shore at low tide. They are one of the largest whales in the world. They lie on their side and dig in the sand with their fins making huge whorls in the beach to dig up and feast on the shrimp.
Wish they had been there for you as they are a spectacular sight.

Hope to host you again in the future. Remind me to give you a returning guest discount when you book again.

A very pleasant property and in a great location. The house was clean and well equipped inside, with an excellent deck area and BBQ outside. Access to the beach was so easy and encouraged you take long walks. The owner was most helpful and genuinely cared about your stay. I would recommend this property to those seeking a quiet and tranquil location, but within easy reach of the mainland. I also recommend the early fall sunsets - fantastic.

Almost perfect vacation at Seashell Beach House

4 of 5
Submitted: July 23, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
My husband and I and our 3 kids (3, 9, and 12) spent 2 weeks at this property and had a wonderful time. The view is splendid - from the dining/family room (wow and 10 stars for the bay view window/couch that can accommodate two adults and two kids! (not for sleeping, don't get me wrong, for admiring the view :-)), and also from the master bedroom upstairs. Magnificent view! We were waking up with the sounds of the waves and the woodpecker working on the old pine. (No view from the second bedroom, just to let you know). The cabin is very clean and very well equipped. Wooden furniture is very nice, kitchen cabinets are pretty old though, but other than that just great; leather furniture and beds very comfy. There are some DVDs, CDs, a couple of kids books and toys, and outdoor toys outside.
I took one star off because of the following: upon our arrival, both bathroom sinks were almost completely blocked and barely usable. We let the owner know about it, and it took her 9 days to summon a plumber to the cabin, so for the 9 days out of 14 we couldn't use the sinks properly. The funny thing is that the owner told us she knew about the problem all along, since she bought the house, but as I understand it, since no one complained before us, she didn't care to fix it. I don't think it's fair to charge so much and pretend everything is perfect at the house (btw, the plumber spent 5 hours to figure out what was wrong and fix it, but he did an awesome job so if you want to stay at the cabin, you don't have to worry about that anymore :-). The other thing that didn't bother us (because we don't watch TV almost at all) but I think I need to mention is that the TV is very old, and is probably not functioning properly, as it is plastered with post-its instructing you to "not press on the button such and such, otherwise you'll get a snowy screen" and other instructions of this kind (the notes are taped on all over the set including TV, remote controls, DVD player). There is a small carpet hanging over the TV in case you ended up with the snowy screen and can't get rid of it, so you can cover the screen with the carpet. Also, you can't tell from the pictures, but the neighboring houses on both sides are very very close (the neighbors on the right were looking right into our family room from their deck). On the other hand, there were plenty of kids for our kids to play with on the beach! Overall very nice place, serene and beautiful.

Owner's Response: Rest assured, my desire is to insure my guests have a wonderful vacation and I strive to correct any guest concerns ASAP.

The bath sinks had incorrect drain installations from a remodel prior to my ownership. Several plumbers had different diagnosis yet couldn't correct the problem. I disclosed to my guests "swirling the water" drains the sinks fast. When these guests called, I left a voicemail for my maintenance man. He called & didn't reach them due to a mixup in the numbers. I was out of the country & I didn't hear from either guest or maintenance man. I assumed the repair was done until the guests called on a Sunday 6 days later. I got a plumber the same day who fixed the problem on Tuesday. I now follow up on all repairs rather than assume no news is good news.

The TV works great with clear reception from loads of cable chanels. It's on a turntable for living room or kitchen viewing. The TV is not a flat screen. Remotes confuse me. My notes are intended to simplify the remote use. The Navajo rug covers the screen when not in use.

My home has window shades for privacy. It is on a quiet beach neighborhood next to 2nd homes with occasional use. Out of 15, there are only 3 with full time residents on my street, the nearest being 2 lots away on either side & vacant lots across the street.

Everyone has different values. I love it when my guests give me their corrective input. My desire is to improve my service and home.

Seashell Beach House has been almost booked solid from June thru mid Oct. Now I'm at the house doing improvements, giving attention to interior fall cleaning and adding to the gardens.

All the best, Kathy Rose

Our family loved every moment of this home and it's location. My husband and I spent a lot of time on the deck drinking coffee, chatting and reading while our girls played on the beach. There was also plenty of room for playing games inside and out. We ate all of our meals at the house, either in the dining area or on the deck. We felt comfortable, safe, at rest and peaceful. The owner was kind and helpful. We'd definitely recommend this home and hope to visit again sometime.

Of the 4 properties we've rented on Whidbey Island, this is by far the best. Very comfortable for 2 adults+ with stairs for those who can. Nicely appointed and a sandy/shell-laden beach that is beyond compare to the others. Many birds to watch, good mollusk meals, and close proximity(by bike or car) to groceries and happenings. Very friendly neighborhood. We will definitely return.
