ellie ali purchased this apartment in 2006
Lisbon is a very charming old world city, not on the regular tourist trail. It has lots of outdoor cafes on every street. The art, music and food of Portugal is found in abundance in Lisbon, the capital. I chose the Alfama neighborhood because of it's ancient feel, tiny streets with very few cars, people who have lived there for many generations keeping their old traditions. You are in the city and at the same time in a tiny village with an atmosphere of another time. I am a painter and find the city beautiful and inspiring.
The apartment is a 3 minute walk to the River Tejo, the large river that runs through Lisbon to the Atlantic. It is a short trip to Estoril beaches by public transport. The famous TRAM #28 which is 1 minute walk from the door, takes you on an enchanting ride through the tiny streets and hills across Lisbon. You don't need a car in Lisbon, public transport and taxis are very abundant and not expensive. Lisbon is a 'secret' city that lives on it's own time. Portuguese people revere their quality of life, which I have found emphasizes eating good fresh food (excellent fish) and drinking the wines of the country, which is another wonderful discovery.
I just wanted you to know that my wife and I had a wonderful time in Lisboa and found your apartment perfect and well suited for our needs. It was nearly 100 degrees each of the 8 days without a cloud in the sky. The apartment was cool and comfortable even though there were some hours in the afternoon where you couldn't be outside because of the heat. We got to know many of the local celebs and had fun just hanging out in Alfama. When we return, I will be sure to contact you again.
We stayed in Ellie's 3rd floor apartment for a week. Everything was clean, well stocked and very comfortable. Her manager, Gorsha(sp), is lovely- speaks perfect English and couldn't be more helpful. Her suggestions for restaurants etc. were excellent. The neighborhood is wonderful- safe(as is all of Lisbon) and very authentic.
The booking process is very easy and Ellie provides tons of information prior to arrival. Everything from how much the cab should cost to directions in Portugese just in case the driver doesn't speak English.
Yes, there is a bar across the square, and on Saturday night it got pretty lively until about 1 am. We were still able to get a perfectly great sleep-a very comfortable bed and earplugs are the key. Or you can hang out the window overlooking the square and enjoy the party.
Thank you Ellie for sharing your home and Gorsha for your truly excellent recommendations.
I'm not sure how I haven't heard about this area before. If you want to get lost in another world, the Alfama neighborhood is a labyrinth full of great food, little supermarkets and colorful people. It's not sanitized like Venice, but has many of the same characteristics. People live here and many don't speak a word of English. You can't walk more than half a block without seeing another market or restaurant, many so tiny they're no bigger than an average living room. Very charming and we found Ellie's apartment to be a great location. She was a big help, as well. Ignore Rick Steve's recommendation to stay here 2 or 3 days. I'd stay here a month if I could.
Ellie's apartment is perfect in decor and location for the charming area of Alfama. It blends in with artistic aspects of the historical area. It is very factual in what you get ,plus it has the charm of an artists home. Gosha who met us was not only capable , informative , personable ,but a lovely person who also fall in love with Lisbon. Every aspect to Ellie's apartment was clean , functional and comfortable. I had a hard time getting my husband to accompany me on the first day ,as he preferred to remain in the unit
To highlight just the apartment I would be remise, as the location adds so much to the ambience . The trams, flea markets, churches plus twisting warrens adds a charm that we have only found in Alfama.
Do we plan on returning. You can bet on it as very few places have such a package deal.
My partner and I booked this apartment for a week in July. It was our first visit to Lisbon & we wanted to experience life in the Alfama, with its history, narrow streets, cobble stones and unique culture. This is the perfect apartment for a couple to experience this. The amenities are comfortable, including two fans which were useful as it is was very hot. There was a stove top but no oven, but a useful microwave, although we didn't cook much as the locale eateries are so tempting and reasonably priced. The washing machine was useful and the water hot for clothes/dish washing and showers. We loved exploring the locale - Sao Vincente Monastery is just up the hill (as is the "thieves" flea market - fascinating second hand stuff for sale), the 28 tram a block away, cafes, restaurants and fado houses within walking distance, handy shops close by, and an opportunity to interact with the local people - who spend alot of time outside talking, singing and the kids playing during the summer. There is even a funky surrealist gallery just opened opposite for art lovers. (And interesting images on the walls of the apartment too) It is only 10 mins from Sao Apollo station which was handy for the metro to the airport, and other connections. And easy to walk into the commercial area. Ellie was a very helpful owner and the booking was very straight forward. Her agents were easy to contact, spoke English and reliable. Great value and recommended. We love Lisbon and will be back!
We want to thank you for having us again in your apartment. I think it was in 2009 we came the first time and stayed in your 2nd floor apartment which was wonderful. My husband and I had such sweet memories of Alfama wanted to return to Lisbon so we could discover more about the city and travel a little around Portugal this time. So, of course we wanted to come to Alfama and stay in your apartment again. We were delighted that now you have the third floor apartment as well, so we chose that one for this trip, and it was just lovely. It had everything we could want in the apartment, comfortable well appointed, high ceilings and that nice large shower. Very bright with lots of light, even on cloudy days. And we must say that it's a very good price for such a nice apartment.
This time we explored the neighborhood much more - it is such a maze of charming tiny beautiful streets. We discovered our favorite little cafes and restaurants - some we remembered and some are new. And not expensive… It is such a short walk to the Flea Market and the center of town. Really all the sights are so easy to get to from your apt. We walked every where!! Oh, the hills in Lisbon gave us new leg muscles!! We appreciate all the help you give us in sending the great directions to things and advising what to do in Lisbon and for some of those excellent restaurant recommendations.
After renting a car at the airport ( again your recommendation) , we drove to Alentejo and around the south of the country - Altogether a wonderful time.
Thank you, Ellie, for letting us stay in your apartment, we will tell our friends.
We could not have been happier. This apartment is perfectly located in the most charming neighborhood in old Alfama. All the sites are within a short walk and literally hundreds of quaint cafes are along the way. (One warning: WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!) There are some shops just outside the apartment with very helpful shopkeepers. This is a real residential street and the locals are really nice - amazing how many speak English! The architecture in the neighborhood is so very interesting, including the building housing the apartment, which must be hundreds of years old. The apartment is roomy and has everything you need - even a washer. The free Wi-Fi worked perfectly. The photos in the ad are accurate.
The Alfama neighborhood is famous for it's special architecture and atmosphere, labyrinth of old streets, good restaurants and authentic Fado Music houses. Even being a 10 minute walk to the center of Lisbon, you enjoy feeling like you are living in a medieval town. We are a 3 minute walk to the famous flea market and lovely churches, musems, shopping, bars and great little restaurants. The Miradoro in Graça - a 5 minute walk, you can have a beautiful view over the city while enjoying a wine or coffee. And very important, English is now spoken widely in Lisbon in almost every shop and restaurant.
