We've just finished the upgrade to our 203 kitchen, and we think you'll like the results. Complimenting the Kenmore 'Elite' appliances, is a an elegant new granite countertop in 'Tropic Brown', a lustrous backsplash in imported 2' x 4' glass-mosaic tiles, and a gorgeous Blanco double sink in stainless. We've moved to Grohe for the faucet, as theirs are the most reliable and aesthetically pleasing fixtures available. Under-cabinet lighting controlled by Lutron dimmable switches allows you to set the mood with soft lighting. And now, a 25 cu. ft. counter-depth Kenmore 'Elite' refrigerator in stainless, with door-based ice and water dispenser rounds out one of the most spectacular kitchens available at Hale Kai O'Kihei.

In finishing, furnishing, and maintaining our apartments 203 and 208 (, we started from a simple premise: what do we like about where we stay when we’re on holiday? Whether we’re doing a home exchange, staying in a reciprocal private club in another city, or in an apartment or condo booked through VRBO, we want a place that speaks to intimacy and individuality.

We don’t like cold, impersonal, one-size-fits-all experiences, where the bare minimum is what’s provided. About Adam Leamy, Owner

We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O’Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less. That philosophy spilled over to our renovation and redecoration of our home in Hale Kai O’Kihei. We considered our 'perfect' Maui home with great care, then worked long hours in two visits over in the summer of 2008, and in many visits since, to make the plan real. Working with good trades, and creative suppliers, we've built the kind of unit we always wanted to stay in: top-end appliances, thoughtful colours and finishings, rich linens and deep thirsty towels, locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork, and all the details -- from snorkels, fins, and masks right down to tropical CDs -- that make coming to our place, and leaving it, the hardest things about visiting Hale Kai O’Kihei. When we visit our home at Hale Kai O’Kihei, we feel that we're settling in to the Hawaii we always dreamed of. We hope that's your experience, too!

Why Adam Leamy, Owner chose Kihei

We'd been visiting Hale Kai O’Kihei since 1997. We knew after our first visit that, simply, the place just worked. The perfect tonic to hectic life. It was the break we needed, the sound of the surf we'd longed for, and the sight of that wonderful, gorgeous blue Pacific that we'd dreamed of. Right from our own balcony, or lanai. And when that wasn't enough, a few steps across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach, and that Hawaiian beachfront walk that helped put life into context, and tease out the solutions to whatever challenges there were. In 2008, it seemed like to the right time to buy -- the time to find if all the things we'd said needed to happen before we bought were just excuses, or in fact, conditions. Well, they were conditions! And with them met, we were ready to buy at Hale Kai O' Kihei. It's great that shopping and other services are only a short block or two away, but for us, that's not the real draw; it's the fact that once we get in the door, and put our groceries in the refrigerator, we're set for the rest of our stay. Sure, we go out to other beaches, and there are restaurants to revisit and new ones to explore, but through the many visits we've made since we purchased and remodeled, we've come to realize that our Maui home, decorated in the style it is, and set up the way it is, offers a remarkable Hawaiian experience, all day long -- from sunup to sunset -- and truth be told, beyond, as sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared behind Lanai, is a star-gazer's paradise, too.

What makes this condo unique

We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand.

We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count.

We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air.

We love midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei.

We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond.

We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow.

We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special.

And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.

Aloha, Adam, if anyone is looking for a condo unit to stay in on Maui they should take a long hard look at this one. It is without a doubt the nicest unit my wife and I have ever stayed in. ( to date we've stayed in at the very least twenty ) Everything and I mean EVERYTHING is top of the line. Adam and Michelle have equipped it top notch everything. This is our second stay in Adam's unit it's so convenient to every thing we didn't bother with a vehicle for the first few days. Adam has hired the best maintenance crew on the island. They keep everything neat and tidy and clean. Mahalo, Adam.

I very much believe that Hale Kai O'Kihei has a different feel depending on the time of the year. While it may be hard to differentiate seasons as in other locales, the mood and character of HKOK reflect its guests perfectly: winter escape; get a jump on spring; launch into summer; endless summer into September and October; and November respite from the realization that at home, the winter weather is approaching. You very kindly mentioned our excellent crew that prepares our apartments for guests’ arrival. They’ve been with us since the start, and are very special to us, and our guests. They are, simply, the best folks on the Island, and they are great ambassadors for Hawaii. Again, thank you for visiting, and for returning to this special location on the ocean's edge. My young adult son last visited Maui as a toddler

What fun it has been revisiting Maui both as adults!

Memories of our road trip to Hana blocked by a very large tree stump and a bolder yes a bolder not a rock and sunset at Haleakala will not soon be forgotten!!

Returning to this beautiful beachfront property after our adventures was so relaxing listening to the waves hit shore wiggling our toes in the soft sand and watching the palm trees sway.

Would return here in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: And we’d welcome you back in a heartbeat, too! When you were planning this trip, you wrote that your son would visit for a week with you and your husband. We thought that was a wonderful thing – with life full of comings and goings, especially as children grow – how nice that you could arrange such a gathering away from home, and so far from home (we grew up in Toronto, so we know your journey to Maui was a long one). But as fate would have it, a delay for your husband, so a week for you and your son on Maui before your husband could join you. We mentioned this development to friends with children, young and older, and each to a person felt that you were a fortunate mum, and your son equally shone upon to be able to have that time together, and in that very special place. In each of our apartments at Hale Kai O'Kihei we supply compilation CDs we've burned for guests’ listening pleasure. An eclectic mix of songs on each CD; new music, old music, known bands and singers, and the unfamiliar. Songs about Hawaii, the sea, sun, wind — pretty much anything that makes me think of Hawaii, or wish that I were there, or that just strikes me as interesting, right down to Bing Crosby doing “On the road to Waikiki.” I’m a drummer, and truth be told, some of those songs are there because of the above, and because they’re also fun to play along with. One of those CDs has a song by John Lennon — “Beautiful boy.” A lovely song, made all the more memorable for this humbling line, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” A song that seems to be so very happily appropriate to the trip you’d planned for Hawaii, and the one that came to be. Do come back — you are a delightful guest, and I very much enjoyed your grand sense of humour! Adam

Fantastic Family Trip

We knew in advance that this was probably going to be a special family trip for us to Maui. We have been to Hawaii each of the past 5 winters, but this one was the most memorable. It was the first time that Janice and I brought our young adult sons with us, and in talking to the owner Adam prior to the trip I knew that Kihei would be a hit for everyone - with the variety of opportunities and activities so nearby.

Adam and Michelle had paid such excellent attention to making our holiday a success PRIOR to our departure, we were very confident that everything would be in order. Although even they surprised us with their thoughtful consideration and attention to detail. A wonderful welcome surprise awaited us the first night - which got us started on the right foot for sure! The condo is wonderfully appointed and very well cared for. Absolutely everything was in order - Adam even ordered new snorkel gear to accommodate our sons Alex and Ryan.

Waking up the first morning and seeing the reaction on the boy’s faces with the beach RIGHT there and a wonderful first breakfast on the lanai continued to set the tone of relaxation and fun.

While we did many things together (snorkeling, family surf lessons, hiking, golf for Alex and Ken, and beach days) there was also plenty of alone time - Alex "chilling" at the condo one day and Janice finding a great yoga studio - Kihei really had it all for us.

But, by far, the highlight of every day was sitting together enjoying dinner on the lanai as the sun set and then someone taking the initiative to propose a thoughtful toast as a reflection of the day. It was a great way of recapping the day and planning for the next day's adventures.

Thanks to Adam and Michelle for providing this great spot for our family to reconnect. We will be back!

To recap, we were almost sold out for the season, with a few days left in this apartment, and a few days left in the other one. This family’s inquiry did so much more than bridge the vacancy: It said so much about their spirit. A solid family with two sons ready to embark on their life journeys, with another son unable to make this trip due to commitments at home. A family so determined to be together at a junction point in life that they were willing to spread their time at Hake Kai O’Kihei across both apartments to make it work. I’ve responded directly to these guests on the other listing page. Here, I really just want to say what a privilege it is to welcome guests who are celebrating milestones in their lives. Maybe, as was the case with this family, it’s two boys, about ready to head out on their own, and one of the last opportunities for the type of family vacation or time together that has marked their past 18 or 19 years. Maybe it’s a mum reconnecting with a daughter. Two sisters finally able to find some time to get away together and spend the type of time with each other that they might have 30 years ago. Maybe it’s old friends, new friends, and best friends. Maybe it’s the start of a journey for a young couple, or the renewal of one for a couple with more than a few springs behind them. As always, a fantastic way to enjoy Maui. Thanks for making it possible to enjoy a short stay. We were reminded how much your place allows to enjoy all the island offers, so we looked to book again for next spring, only to find you're already completely booked. We're learning now to book a long way ahead if we want the best condo unit, and the best value, in all of Kihei. Can't say enough about the kitchen remodel, too. Superb. A professional chef would be right at home. We've seen it all, and we will always choose your wonderful unit.

Owner's Response: Over the years, we’ve been honoured to have built relationships with guests who stay with us whenever they’re in the Maui mood, where Maui is the destination for their travels. I have to admit, though, that your travels, so far afield as they are, and so complicated in their organization and timing cause me to welcome an inquiry from you with particular curiosity: ‘Where are they heading off to now that a Maui stay is required?’ or, ‘Where on earth are they coming back from this time that brings them through Maui?’ Your travels are never mundane, always an adventure, and ever a delight to play a small part in. In fact, more than once you’ve remarked on some service or amenity you’ve encountered at some of the world’s grand hotels that seemed appropriate to offer in our apartments, which we have, to great guest enjoyment. This year was an odd one. As we reached the summer of 2014, over both apartments, we had but five full weeks of space available until April 2015. And by September, we were sold out. Not a bad problem to have, I know, and a trend that’s been developing, but I have to say that I missed all the activity that had marked the previous eight months as guests inquired and we arranged their bookings. This heightened activity is surely a sign of economic rebound. But, if you’ll allow, it’s also a function of the quality of guests we’ve been fortunate to have stay with us. Put simply, kind, considerate guests who appreciate the details have made us better, have made us strive to offer the improvements that we think they’ll enjoy; that will allow a stay with us to compare favourably with the exceptional hotel and resort accommodation and location experiences they encounter in their travels around the globe. We’ll always work to accommodate your schedule. And while the idea of our guests booking seven or eight months in advance to secure their preferred window with us is not something I foresaw when we started in 2008, it is a state of affairs that exists precisely because of the quality of our guests, their expectations of a stay with us, and the vital role they have played in making a stay with us exceptional. They say you can’t go home again but we have. We are back staying in this apartment – the place we stayed when we came five years ago – and it does feel like home, just with a way better view!

The upgrades to the kitchen are beautiful and the place looks the same (in a good way). I could go on and on about all the great dishes, towels, bedding but really I just keep looking out the window.

Often the flights we get to Hawaii arrive after dark and when you get to the apartment you know you are close to the water because you can hear the waves but the best part is the first morning when you wake up and the ocean and the beautiful view is right there. Yes, the free long distance, the fast WiFi, the snorkel gear, the beach chairs etc. are great, but really it is the location.

We are a moment from the beach, a very short walk to get supplies, a resident of a quiet street in sunny Kihei but then just a quick drive up Lipoa Street and you are on your way to Wailea, UpCountry or West Maui. To top it all off the service is great and the owner is always available but not intrusive.

We’ve made a lot of changes over the years, adding amenities and additional touches that we think guests might like. You notice them all, and let us know. But you’ve never lost sight of the magic, the true wonder of Hale Kai O’Kihei. While others spend their whole holiday trying to find that place for a meal that commands a front-row seat on the ocean’s edge; that spot to read, where you can see the waves break on the beach, and hear them break, too, yet remain cool and shaded under your own palm tree; or, find that rare elevated view that captures the beach, the sounds of the gentle surf breaking, and the sight of whales breaching just off shore, those that stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei have it by looking out from their living room, or by sitting on their own lanai. There is, simply, no better way to enjoy Maui, to experience Maui, and to embrace Maui than by sitting on your own lanai, taking it all in — every bit of it — at Hale Kai O’Kihei. You know, I used to come down with several books, and I’d get them all read, then buy more. Increasingly, though, I’m doing my reading on the plane, because once I arrive at HKOK, no matter which of our apartments we’re staying at, I’m captivated by those sounds, the views, and the location on the ocean’s edge, and before I know it, I’ve been staring out to sea for hours, the book unopened. It is, in a word, Heaven. The more complicated life gets, the more demands on our time and of our energies, the more restorative and elegantly simple are those two apartments at HKOK. Hi Adam and Michelle

Thank you both for inviting us to your home away from home in Maui. The location could not have been better to all the beaches and other island vistas. Your unit has been tastefully updated with all the amenities necessary for a worry free holiday. Although you have posted pictures taken from the lanai they do not do justice to the natural beauty of the beach and ocean views. During our evening bbqing we meet up with a number of owners and vacationers who have a long term relationship with the property. Some with over 30 years of history. Although your ownership time is fairly recent all the owners are very much aware of the time and expense you have put into your units and I trust it will encourage others to upgrade. That being said the exterior of the building and common areas are extremely well maintained. While we were there contractors were installing slate on all the walkways a very nice enhancement to the look of the property.

While it was our first time to Maui (which I can't really explain why) we will be back next year for a visit and absolutely will use you property. Although I know you thrive on detail the welcome gifts were very much appreciated and clearly set a high standard for all other property owners who are attempting to build a solid base of loyal and appreciative clients.

Owner's Response: One of the greatest things in life is to encounter, along the winding road, someone who makes a difference. Readers of these guest notes may have read the ones from my high school math teacher. A patient soul if ever there was one, that teacher forgave a lot of my mistakes, and allowed me to move on, when all signs — and my performance — made a stronger case for holding me back. How fine it was to share this magic place with he and his wife, 35 years later. It seems to me that encountering one such individual is uncommon. But to have the fortune in one’s life to encounter two such people must be a rare thing, indeed. And such is the case with the guest who wrote the note, above. Mr. E. was my boss, some 20 years ago, and remains the best boss I’ve ever had. Clever, kind, sharp, demanding, forgiving, trusting, funny, and so very wise, he gave me the keys, knew I’d make most of the turns, offered guidance and correction when he could see I was going into a corner too fast, and when I made the inevitable mistakes, stood by me, stood firm, and to all of us who notice these things, stood tall. A young man then and, of course, still that today, he allowed me to enjoy the credit for successes earned, yet eased the sting of failure, so that both experiences could offer the wisdom and humility one needs to meet greater, and sometimes, even riskier challenges. Yes, the best boss I have ever had — and I wish others had my fortune to have learned from him. We faced some tremendous obstacles, those 20 years ago and yet, today, not a week goes by, or has gone by since, where I haven’t drawn upon some experience he provided, or some lesson he offered, to do the work I do, or share with others so they can do the work they have to do. I can only imagine the many nights he had to come home, late, to Mrs. E. after her demanding days, wondering if I’d make it through the next curve, and at what cost. Well, I did, and what a privilege it was to share with them both the house, in Maui, that in their own way, they each helped build through their kindness and patience two decades ago.
