This property, was in the works of being built in 1993 and finished in 1995. John's love of Castles began when he was a young child and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania. As an adult he found this beautiful 500+ acreage of land quite by accident in the woods of New Hampshire. The plans to build this home began after much travel throughout, Europe exploring other castles. Today, after our five children have grown up and left this wonderful home, they continue to return to this gorgeous property to come together as a quite large extended family. We continue to celebrate many of the holidays here with our family and have now opened it up to you so that you may enjoy it as much as we do.
John & Lynda Hunt purchased this castle in 1995
The Cathedreal of the Pines is a must see located in Rindge 5 minutes away with beautiful gardens; a historical landmark you would not want to miss. In less than 30 minutes, one can venture to Mount Monadnock, the most climbed mountain in the world. For the first time climbers, Pack Monadnock , only 25 minutes drive (across from Temple Mountain), is also a great family climb for those who have younger children. The views are spectacular. The town of Fitzwilliam, approximately 10 minutes away, is famous for it's Antiques. The town of Peterborough ( approximately 20 minute drive or less) well known for the 'Peterborough Players' theatre house, was also the setting for the well known play 'Our Town'. It also has many cozy shops and wonderful restaurants. The bustling city of Keene is great for window shopping, fine dining, and entertainment. The Colonial Theatre in Keene, features plays with some well know actors, singers and comedians and is located on Main St. Twinkle Town miniature golf can also be enjoyed by all and is located between the towns of Rindge and Keene approximately 15 minutes away. Also, there are many lakes and state parks that are close by (not more than 20 minutes drive) for a great beach day.
The castle was all the we hoped for and more. The layout, particularly the living room (with grand piano) and the central staircase (with suit of armor) were fantastic--well appointed, lavishly decorated, and impeccably maintained, with plenty of books, games, and movies. The kitchen had all the amenities, including staples (we had brought our own, not knowing what to expect).
We were 10 adults and 7 children. Even though it rained all weekend and we were essentially housebound, there was plenty of room for us to spread out, play, and socialize. (Ours was a family reunion, so that's how we wanted it. It was perfect for us.) We even used the jacuzzi outside and the kids had fun sliding down the hill. The bedrooms were wonderful and the playroom upstairs was great for the kids. We also got good use out of the pool table, darts, and poker table in the basement. It was extremely comfortable and everybody loved it.
The owner was very gracious. He provided a one-page listing of restaurants, etc. in the area prior to our arrival. He was very appreciative of our treatment of the place (we were conscientious about cleaning) and happily and promptly refunded our deposit in full.
The location, despite being just over the border from Massachusetts, is fairly remote. The property is grand, with great views. Outdoor activity is your best bet.
I recommend mapping out directions very carefully in advance. We got lost despite having a navigation system, a printed Google map, and maps on an iphone. Some roads are minor or dirt, and not all systems recognize them. Once you know where you're going, it's not difficult.
We had 10 of us at this castle all in our 30's and had a blast. The first time you see the castle from the dirt road you have to stop and take a photo, its breathtaking. The weather was amazing (and if it wasn't there is plenty of stuff to do inside)... we enjoyed the lake (not swimming too cold) kayaking and hiking around it. The field was perfect for our daily wiffleball tournament, Frisbee toss and whatever else we thought up. The inside is amazing and the secret tunnels are so cool. It is so peaceful and quiet on the ground. I enjoyed my morning cup of coffee on the roof of the castle watching the sun rise and looking at the mountains. I want to thank KR for showing us the place and being a gracious host as well as John and Lynda for opening their home to everyone. We will definitely be back.
If I can make one suggestion it would be put a big screen TV in the basement by the pool table, bar, dart board, ping pong table and poker table.
Planning a weekend celebration for our family of 22 from ages 2 months to 76 years in the middle of winter was a challenge. The Castle was the perfect choice. From the first view of driving through the snow to see a beautiful castle looming in front and a warm welcome and tour by the helpful caretaker, we were assured of a magical and memorable weekend. Our three daughters carefully planned the meals and bedroom assignments and a "Family Winter Olympics" with indoor and outdoor games. The very cold and snowy weekend did not prevent outdoor activities, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, sledding. The highlight of the weekend was a wonderful catered dinner by Lucas Catering of Keene, NH. The children never tired of the secret passages, playrooms, and just being in a real castle! One grandson said "this was the best weekend of his life". The hot tub was put to good use and even had some of the kids jumping in the snow from the hot tub. The castle is well-heated and well equipped for a large group of all ages. There were lots of cross country skiis, skates and sleds available for all who wanted to use them. Every one of us wants to come back!
Three generations, seven families, twenty two people which included 11 kids aged three to twelve and not one " I am bored" for the entire stay. And how could you be bored, after all, it is a CASTLE. What a place and what a setting. The castle is so much fun to explore and enjoy - the kids loving the space, game room, secret passage ways, and the adults the space and certainly the great fire pit sitting atop the hill overlooking the spacious lawn and beautiful lake.
The lake was fantastic with plenty of kayaks and boats, plus privacy, and great swimming. So much to do including some fishing too. The 2 plus mile walk around the lake was great exercise and lots of fun through the woods.
There were tag football games, soccer, baseball and Frisbee games on the lawn. Bike riding on the trails, Frisbee gold through the woods on a certified course, hot tub, and more kept everyone active and busy.
Plenty of room to cook a meal for all of us at the same time and celebrate an important birthday for one of us.
We, like so many others have written, never left the property once we got there except a couple of quick trips to a nearby grocery store. Certainly for our visit here, we all learned that an extended family that "castles together", stays together.
Thanks to the owners, John and Linda for opening up their home so we and others could enjoy such an amazing experience. Also, a big thank you to the staff headed by Mike, a very helpful and informative host and to his assistant KR.
We will be having more reunions and certainly plan to return as soon as we can.
In researching accommodation for four generations (twenty people) to gather for the celebration of the eightieth birthday of our ‘clan patriach’ we were fortunate to discover Sunridge Castle. What more perfect place to celebrate someone who grew up in the shadow of the Royal Castle of Windsor, UK.
Sunridge was all we hoped for and more; a charming, whimsical and incredibly comfortable building in secluded grounds, with great views of Mount Monadnock and a pretty lake at the foot of the sweeping lawn running down from the castle patio….the fire pit was great in the evenings! An added bonus was the daily visit from Mike, the incomparable and informative caretaker, who made sure things were running smoothly.
We had a regatta on the lake using the wide variety of water craft; a tournament of team games on the lawn and a table tennis tournament in the games room; a royal banquet in the large dining room under the ‘sunset’ ceiling; many fun photo ops including a royal wave from the balcony and a shot of the birthday boy reclining in the master bedroom’s beautiful four poster bed wearing his crown. There was an endless variety of things to do for all ages.
We heartily recommend Sunridge Castle for that special large gathering or celebration. It offers a different experience (including cross country skiing in the winter we hear)and the owners have taken care to cover every detail necessary to make one’s stay comfortable.
Our family returned to the castle to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday. We had stayed for a week a few years ago and had such a great time. This time we were there in winter which was a completely different - but equally great - experience. We spent much of the time outside sledding. The hill in front of the castle was awesome for sledding - even the adults joined in - and those not sledding could hang out by the firepit and watch. The castle also provides cross country skis and there were so many sizes that everyone wanting to try it was able to find a pair that fit. Mike the caretaker was great, he is so helpful and we looked forward to him coming by every morning with the paper. We also really appreciate that everything is provided for us, bed linens, towels, paper towels, soap, shampoo, everything you could possibly need, which really cuts down on packing. We plan to return again this year, once we can agree on summer or winter! Thanks for a great vacation!
The only entrance to the castle is Sauvola Drive in Rindge, NH which is off Able Road near the Rindge/Fitzwillam town line.
If you cross-country ski you, we provide 20 kilometers of skiing right here on the property. We have several ski resorts near by. Wachusett is 30 minutes away, Crotched Mt. is 40 minutes away, Pats peak is 50 minutes away and Mt. Sunapee is 70 minutes.
